Collinson , Mote , Inman . Minutes of last meeting having been read and confirmed , the Fifteen Sections were worked . First Lecture—Bros . On the motion of Bro . Clark , seconded by Bro . Andrews , a vote of thanks was unanimously accorded to Bro . Lardner for the efficient manner in which he had

discharged fche duties of W . M ., and put the questions for the Fifteen Sections , the same fco be entered on the minutes . Bro . Lardner was also unanimously elected an honorary member , with full privileges . He suitably responded . On the motion of Bro . Pinder , seconded by Bro . Clark , a vote of thanks was unanimously accorded to fche brethren of the West Smithfield Lodge of Instruction , for so readily accepting the invitation of this Lodge fco work fche Fifteen Sections , and for fche

able manner in whioh they had done so . Bro . Pennefather suitably responded . The following brethren were ananimously elected mem . bersj—Bros . G . and Tyler ; also Phillips and Taylor . After the usual preliminaries , Brother Taylor , a candidate for raising , gave proof of his proficiency in the former degrees , and was entrusted . Lodge was then advanced to the third degree , and the ceremony of raising was rehearsed , Bro . Taylor

candidate . The W . M . read an article from the FREEMASON ' S CHRONICLE , of 2 nd December , entitled "What came yon here to do ? " which appeared originally in the Masonic Review . The article is an exceedingly well written one , and is full of suggestions as to thewelfare of both Masons and Lodges , and will repay any brother for a careful perusal . Brother Taplin was elected to fill the chair at the next meeting . Lodge was then closed with the usual formalities , and adjourned until Monday next , the 11 th inst .

Royal York Lodge of Instruction , No . 318 . —There was a large gathering of tbe Freemasons of Brighton and the adjacent districts on Monday evening last , the 4 th inst ., under the auspices of the above Lodge of Instruction to hear Bro . James Stevens P . M . P . Z . read his excellent lecture explanatory of the ritual and ceremonies of the first degree . The Lodge was opened shortly after seven o ' clock

by Bro . Gibson W . M . 315 , and amongst the members of the Lodge present were Bros . Carpenter , Hanney , George Nash , Smith P . P . G . D ., Lelew , Thacker , Kent , Nye S . D ., Wood jnn ., Godfice , Deane , Beaumont , Styer , Paige , Anderson , Stride P . M ., Fielders , Metherell , & o . And amongst the members were Bros . Norman 22 ( London ) , Fitzgerald 36 , Colborne 115 , King 217 , Wellington 207 , Schofield 315 , Clayton

341 , Winleteshir 379 , Legg 732 , Walker 811 , Knight 1446 , Shackles 1511 , Hornsen Prov . G . D . East Yorks , Tidmarsh 1636 , Hollands 1797 , Newton , Barfield , Thomson , Parsons and Tooth all of 1821 , English and Gates of 1829 , and several other brethren who failed to sign fche Visitor ' s sheet . Immediately after the opening of the Lodge

the W . M . introduced Bro . Stevens to the assembled brethren , and for a little more than two hours the lecturer kept his audience thoroughly interested , making his address the more attractive by an able recital of the several ceremonies in full , with most pertinent remarks on the numerous divergencies which have of lato years crept into the Ritual . On the whole fche hearers were in full accord with the remarks of the

lecturer . On one or two points very interesting observations were made by intelligent brethren , with the result of enlightening tbe minds of many present , and enabling them to understand points and practices which they had not up to that time fully comprehended the importance of . At the conclusion of the lecture , Bro . Stevens was greeted with much applause , and the thanks of the Lodge of

Instruction were cordially voted in slight acknowledgment of his services , the W . M . expressing his gratification to find that the working of Masonic ceremonial at Brighton agreed so nearly with that which had been set forth by the lecturer . He considered that he ( the lecturer ) should be heard far and wide , as many Lodges might then be able to correct existing fallacies ; aud by others , that their mem

bers might be confirmed , as in their own case , in the correctness of their mode of working , Bro . Stevens , in acknowledging the compliment , stated that the invite the Lodge had made , and the reception they had accorded him , were ample reward for any service he had rendered , his object being to receive , and , as far as was in his

power , to give , Masonic instruction . He should be prepared , on reasonable notice , to repeat his evening ' s work in any other Lodge , Provincial or Metropolitan . The Lodge was then closed , and a most agreeable and enthusiastic evening was terminated by a brief entertainment in the way of refreshment afc the usual meeting room of the Lod ge of Instruction , afc Bro .
