OKEHAMPTON HALL

THE new Masonic Hall is nearing completion , and will , it is expected , be dedicated on Monday , 26 th August , by the Acting Provincial Grand Master of Devonshire Bro . G . C Davie P . G . D . of England .

New Hall At Leeds.

NEW HALL AT LEEDS .

FOR several years eight of the nine Lodges at Leeds have held their meetings in the Masonic Hall , Carlton Hill . This building , however , afforded inadequate accommodation

for so many Lodges , and it was decided on the part of six of them to erect a Hall of their own . The new building , which has just been completed , was Consecrated and opened on the 29 th ult .

The dedication ceremony was impressively performed by the Rt . Hon . W . L . Jackson ^ M . P ., Provincial Grand Master of West Yorkshire , in the presence of a numerous gathering of Provincial Grand

Officers and other members of the Craft . The Provincial Grand Master said that it was with feelings of thankfulness and gratitude that they had been spared to see the completion of the building , the foundation stone

New Hall At Leeds.

of which was laid some time ago > by the Earl of Warwick . He hoped the building would be convenient for the purpose for which it was designed , and would be found in the future

a centre of usefulness to the Province . The enterprise had the good wishes of the large body of Masons in the Province , and that being so he had no doubt of its fulfilling the purpose for which it was intended .

The dedication ceremony was then proceeded with , in the course of which the Rev . H . Doig , one of the Provincial Grand Chaplains , delivered the Oration , in which he said that the Masonic ideal was a grand ideal , and they should

endeavour to realise it and so impress the world with the fact that there . was not the disparity some people imagined between their ideals and realisation . Masonry brought together those who would have been separated by rank and station and political and religious differences .

During the afternoon Bro . J . Barraclough Chairman of the New Masonic Hall Company presented the Provincial Grand Master with a handsome gold key of the building . The presentation was suitably acknowledged . In the evening a banquet was held at the Town Hall , at which Bro . J . Barraclough presided .

The new Hall is a great acquisition , affording accommodation very superior to that of the old building at the rear of the Town Hall . It is asserted , indeed , that there is no finer building of its kind in the north of England . Erected from the designs of Bro . J . M . Bottomley , there is nothing

very striking in the exterior , but within everything is commodious , substantial , admirable . The frontage is of brickbrown glazed in the basement ; red-pressed , with red sandstone dressings , above ; and buff , with stone dressings , higher still . A spacious vestibule gives access on the ground floor to

three rooms , which are to be used for Provincial Grand Lodge purposes , and to another apartment suitable for small Lodge meetings . The accommodation for social functions is of a very complete character . On the first floor is a handsome dining

room overlooking Great George Street 1 , capable of seating 400 . Behind this is a smaller dining room , and between the two a spacious lounge , whilst the service rooms are also adjacent . On the second floor is the principal Lodge Room , which is of about the same dimensions as the larger dining

room . A lift affords easy communication between the different floors . The kitchens and the caretaker ' s apartments are at the top of the house ; in the basement are a number of safes for the preservation of the archives and the safe keeping of the jewels , & c , of the Order . In addition to . the

upstair apartments mentioned are four Instruction rooms , which may be reached from a separate entrance and by a separate staircase . The whole of the interior is well lighted , and at night a very complete illumination will be afforded by the electric light . Mr . J . T . Wright , builder , has executed the principal contract .

There are six tenant Lodges—viz ., the Philanthropic , No . 304 ; Alfred , No . 306 ; Excelsior , No . 1042 ; Zetland , No . 1311 ; Goderich , No . 1211 ; and Prudence , No . 2069 . No doubt other local Lodges will avail themselves of the new

Hall , which has been erected at a cost of about £ 14 , 000 , including land , by the Leeds Masonic Flail Company , Ltd . The building is admirably situated , being in a quiet thoroughfare in the centre of the city . On adjacent land the new Roman Catholic Cathedral is about to be built .

Fire At Maryport Hall.

FIRE AT MARYPORT HALL .

THE Masonic Hall at Maryport , which is occupied by the Lodge of Perseverance , No . 371 , was the scene of an . outbreak of fire early on Tuesday morning , 30 th ult , and

though the flames were subdued m a little over an hour , irretrievable damage was done . The injury to the building will be met by a few hundred pounds , but all the furniture and Masonic equipment of the Hall , including some handsome

tracing boards , and portraits of former Masters , which were greatly valued , were destroyed , nothing being saved except the Charter of the Lodge , some of the minute books , and some silken banners . The furniture and Masonic emblems were insured for £ 300 .
