EOYAL AECH . — : o : —

RECTITUDE CHAPTER , No . 581 . THE regular meeting took place at the Mosley Hotel , Manchester , on Thursday , 1 st inst ., Comp . Joseph T . Richardson P . P . A . Soj . P . Z . in the principal chair . There were also present : —Comps . H . B . Brown H ., Robt . Rudman E ., Chas . Wm . Dove N ., J . C . Lilly P . S ., H . G . Walker A . S ., Wm . Rostroh Treas ., N . Goodman , J . M . Frost P . Z ., D . Ostaro , J . Shaw , J . 0 . Brown , 0 . H . Griffiths , Nelson Stokes , R . Adshead . and others .

After the confirmation of minutes , the election of Officers took place , Comp . H . B . Brown being chosen as 1 st Principal , and J . C Wilson as 2 nd . The election of 3 rd Principal was deferred . The Companions adjourned to a substantial supper , this being succeeded in turn by the festive board .

A HOUSEHOLD FIRE ESCAPE . A WELL known member of the Upton Lodge , No . 1227 , in the person of its Steward , Bro . W . J . Carroll , has been turning his attention to a most useful contrivance , in fche form of a Household Fire Escape , which he has patented at home and abroad , in conjunction with a partner Mr . Seary , under the name of the " Hawk . " As the patentees say , the chief points to be kept in view in choosing a household fire escape are : simplicity , strength , and quickness of action , all of which qualities are contained in the " Hawk , " which is so simple that a child can use it ; so strong that it is guaranteed to

bear half-a-ton ; and so quick in action that a man can save wife , family , and himself in one or two minutes . Some of its other advantages are : It is not a fixture to one particular window ; you cannot fall while getting out , because you are attached inside fche room ; ifc is nofc unsightly ; occupies little space , and cannot get out of order ; no outside help whatever needed ; suitable for men , women , children , and invalids ; ready at any moment ; and , finally , it is well within the reach of all , being sold complete ( with 40 feet of best Italian hemp rope ) at the unique price of 25 s . ( Longer ropes cost at the rate of lid per foot extra . )

Visitors to the Tower of London on Thursday of last week were the interested spectators of a novel exhibition—that is , as far as this historic edifice is concerned , says the " City Press , " for on that afternoon Bro . Carroll was demonstrating the use of his new escape , in the White Tower . General Milman , C . B . ( fche Governor of the Tower ) , Sir F . Middleton , K . C . M . G ., C . B ., Colonel Hatton ( commanding the 1 st Grenadier Guards ) , Major Dawson , R . A . ( Fire Master of the Tower ) , Mr . Penrose ( chief warder ) , and a number of the Guards watched the exhibition . The invention consists

of a short outside arm , fixed into the wall , with attachments , an " escape block , " a rope with safety hooks at each end , and two belts . The belts are fixed around the chest , and with the aid of the escape block a person can slide down the rope to terra firma in a few seconds and in perfect safety . In place of the short arm a crane already fixed on the wall was used , and to this the ropes were attached . Some forty or fifty persons were lowered from the top storey of the tower , a distance of about sixty feet , in the course of half an hour , amid the plaudits of the assembled spectators . The escape worked perfectly , and there was not the slightest hitch throughout .

Another advantage claimed for the " Hawk " over other escapes is that the lowering of persons is continuous—that is , that the descent of the first person brings the apparatus into position for the descent of the second , and so on , without the loss of time entailed in hauling up , and reversing , & c . We refer our readers for further particulars to the inventor , Bro . Carroll ( known to many as the " Jeweller" of the Upton Lodge ) , 17 Beer Lane ,

Great Tower Street , E . O ., and wish him every success in his latest undertaking . We may , however , add that the patentees will be pleased at any time to send their two professional Firemen ( specially engaged ) to test the apparatus and give instructions in working . Their experts also undertake fche drilling of private brigades ; overhauling and testing fire appliances , & c . ; and will give disinterested advice upon all matters appertaining to the prevention and extinction of fire .
