GRAND LODGE OF SCOTLAND .

THE Quarterly Meeting of the Grand Lodge of Scotland was held on the i st inst , in the Freemasons' Hall , Edinburgh . The attendance was large , many Brethren being present in consequence of the nomination of Officers for the ensuing year . The Hon . James Hozier , M . P ., M . W . Grand Master presided .

The Grand Lodge was smartly opened , and before proceeding with the business on the agenda , the Chairman moved that the sympathy and regret of the Grand Lodge be recorded at the death of Bro . the Rev . John A . Clark , of Brechin . After the minutes of Grand Lodge and other matters had been

disposed of the Grand Master introduced what he regarded as a very important matter affecting the interests of the Grand Lodge of Scotland . He read to Grand Lodge the letter of resignation of the Office of Grand Secretary by Brother D . Murray Lyon , and submitted several recommendations from

Grand Committee of the action that should be taken in the matter . These were agreed to , namely , to advertise for applications ; that these be examined by a Committee and reduced to a leet to be voted on at a " pro re nata " meeting

on 13 th December . The recommendation of Grand Committee that during the remainder of Bro . Murray Lyon ' s life he be paid his full official salary of £ 600 a year was also agreed to .

The proposal to grant a Charter for a new Lodge to be called " Cataract , " to meet in Gokak Falls , Belgaum , India , was approved . A motion to alter the Constitution for the convenience of Lodges abroad was remitted to Grand Committee . Bro .

Grand Lodge Of Scotland.

James Berry P . G . M . for Forfarshire proposed the re-election of Bro . the Hon . James Hozier as Grand Master . He was sure there would be but one mind on the subject . The proposal , received with acclamation by the large assembly , was seconded by Bro . Col . Campbell P . G . M . for Perthshire East . Bro . Hozier thanked the Brethren for the enthusiasm and

unanimity with which he was elected , and for their unlimited confidence .

CONSEOKATION . — : o : —

A SPECIAL meeting of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Cumberland and Westmorland was held on Friday of last week , at the Masonic Hall , Fisher Street , Carlisle , when the Alston Lodge , No . 2 794 , was consecrated .

The ceremony was performed by the Provincial Grand Master Lord Henry Cavendish-Bentinck , M . P ., and at the conclusion of the ceremonies a banquet was partaken of and the usual toast list honoured , under the presidency of the Provincial Grand Master .

Exonians continue to have the honour of monopolising the chair of the Gallery Lodge , No . 1928 . On the 3 rd inst ., Bro . F . W . Brodie , of Exeter , W . M . retired , and had the privilege of installing as his successor Bro . L . F . Gowing , also of Exeter . Bro . Brodie twenty-two years ago was initiated

in Semper Fidehs Lodge , Exeter , by his father , who was a Provincial Grand Officer and W . M . of the Lodge . Brother Brodie is a Founder of the new Devonian Lodge in London , and has been offered by Lord Halsbury the collar of Director of Ceremonies . Bro . JL . F . Gowing , who succeeds him in the

chair , was at Hele s School , Exeter , with Bro . Brodie , and one of the guests on Saturday was another schoolfellow , Bro . W . H . Lascelles , of Exeter , W . M . of the Addiscom . be Lodge , No . 1558 , Croydon , and of No . jp , the oldest Lodge in Devon , All three , are members of the Hele ' s School Old Boys' Society

of which Bro . Brodie is Founder , Secretary , and Treasurer . Singularly enough , Bro . Brodie ' s predecessor as W . M . ( Bro . Peachey ) was also at Exeter , and his father , as well as the fathers of Bros . Brodie and Gowing will be remembered as

old Exeter journalists . Bro . Gowing , the new W . M ., is a member of the staff of the " Daily Graphic , " spent several years in China , returning home through Siberia in the winter , and is author of " Five Thousand Miles in a Sledge . "

• • • We are pleased to hear a very , successful start has been made with a fourth Benevolent Association in connection with the Upton Lodge of Instruction , No . 1227 . The inaugural meeting was held on Monday , when thirty shares

of ten guineas each were taken up . Bro . \ V . J . Carroll , the present Master of the Mother Lodge , is the Hon . Treasurer of the Association , and it is his wish to have at least fifty shares subscribed at the start . We expect before these lines appear in print he and the Brethren who are working with

him will have succeeded in enlisting the further support wished for , and as a consequence they will look forward to being able to send at least five hundred guineas to the Institutions during the time their Association will take to work itself out . A most laudable ambition , and one we hope will be achieved to the fullest extent !

* • It is seldom we are able to report any Masonic proceedings in which the Grand Master of Ireland takes a prominent part , not because the Duke of Abercorn is less mindful of his duties as head of the Order in that

Jurisdiction , but rather because the Masons of Ireland are particularly averse to public or semi-public displays of Freemasonry . Hence it is we are specially pleased to record the proceedings in connection with the recent inauguration of a new Hall at Lurgan , when the Grand Master of Ireland

expressed himself in terms which must meet the approval , of Brethren the world over , and at the same time prove that our Brethren of the Emerald Isle , if a little reserved in regard to their work , are as enthusiastic and sincere in their Masonic duties as any of the members of our widely dispersed Brotherhood .
