it was derived we have little doubt , and bore the following inscription : rresentea to

BROTHER T . G . GUNN , by Brethren of the Upton Lodge , No . 1227 , as a token of regard , on the occasion of his Marriage Sept . 26 th 1900 .

Bro . Gunn was heartily greeted and congratulated by those present , and in acknowledgment said he should always esteem the handsome gift they had made him . He really felt too full with thanks to find words in which to express all he desired . He sincerely thanked them .

Brother Rowberry I . P . M . proposed the toast of the Masonic Charities , to which he would ask the W . M . to reply . Many of them knew the yeoman service the Institutions were doing , and many knew how much Bro . Carroll had done in their behalf . He had qualified for two of the three funds , and was now working as a Steward for

the next Anniversary Festival of the Benevolent Institution , for which he was pleased to know he had already promises amounting to something like a hundred guineas on his list . The Institutions of Freemasonry were known far and wide and honoured for what they had done in the past . He trusted they would achieve as much in the future .

The W . M . replied , hoping—as he believed—that the Brethren would do something of which the Upton Lodge might be proud , on behalf of his Stewardship for the Old Peoples' Festival of next year . The Instruction Lodge had just started a ' fourth Charitable

Association and to prove the interest of the new members in this great principle of Freemasonry two of them had started paying for Life Governorships before they were initiated into the Craft . He was proud to say that in their own Lodge thev had already twenty-one members who were subscribing .

In toasting the Officers of the Lodge the W . M . said the Brethren had had the opportunity of seeing for themselves what they were capable of , and he thought there could only be , one feeling as a consequence—entire satisfaction . One of the Stewards of the Lodge—Bro . Hartwcll—had a birthday once in a while , and as it happened to fall that day he was sure the members would unite in wishing him many happy returns , which was done in all cordiality .

After replies to the toast the Tyler gave the concluding sentiment , and the proceedings were brought to an end . Some excellent songs were rendered during the evening , the Organist affording most valuable assistance .

The Deputy Provincial Grand Master took the opportunity of pointing out one or two defects which have arisen in the general working of the Craft , and suggested as far as possible uniformity , which , he contended was necessary .

Brother Hooper , in his advocacy of the cause which he had so much at heart , made some very strong , although friendly strictures upon the lack of interest shown by some Lodges towards the Masonic Institutions , which Brother Cheetham most eloquently accentuated .

Provincial.

Brother Newton reverted to the position which the Lodge held with regard to age . and his address was very interesting , being mostly reminiscent . In the course of his remarks , Bro . Two of the candidates , Messrs . Cleaver and Townly , being present were duly initiated into the secrets and mysteries of Freemasonry , by the newly installed W . M . in a very able manner . After hearty good wishes from all the Brethren the Lodge was closed in due form .

The Brethren then adjourned to a very excellent banquet , provided in the large Hall , lighted by the electric light , by Bro . J . Wright-Cooper , the Proprietor . After grace and the usual Masonic toasts a very enjoyable musical programme was provided by the Brethren of the Lodge , which was greatly appreciated . Among those assisting we must not forget to mention Bros . Geo . Chapman , J . Bartlett , T . Golby , T . H . Haly , Stephen Hussey , F . Lewis .

Loyal and Masonic toasts were interspersed with songs , & c .,-rendered by members of the Lodge , and including Bros . Wrigley , Todd , Purdy , Ward , Harrop , Chapman , Beswick , and others . Bro . Stubbs W . M . said he had not prepared a speech , and he did not deserve the ovation which his name had called forth . He admitted it was a great honour to occupy the position which he held that evening , but it was no surprise to him , because he had

commenced at the bottom round of the Masonic ladder , and had gradually worked himself forward . He had been complimented in every Office which he had held , and as he believed that true Brotherly love existed among them , he would do -his best to maintain the feeling . Bro .
