rpiIIS Lodgo continues to grow ; during tho summer recess it bar 1- uot beon idle . On Wednesday , the 1 st inst ., the third emergency meeting , since Alay , took placo at fche " Silver Tavorn , " Burdett Road , E ., under the presidency of Bro . Somerset W . Timson .

The Lodge being opened in due form , Bros . Walsh and Vickers were passed , and subsequently Messrs . Forgusou , Spurgeon , Findlay , and Pouton where initiated into the mysteries of the first degree . The remaining business being transacted , the Lodge was closed , and the brethren adjourned to refreshment and harmony .

fTlHE installation of Bro . Aaron Peat took place on Saturday , 4 th J- inst ., at the Lecture Hall , Kingston Square , Hull . The installation ceremony was ably performed by Bro . Ansdoll P . M ., in the presence of a large number of members of the Craft . Subsequently the W . M . invested the following brethren aa hia Officers for the ensuing year : —Bro ** . " atford I . P . M ., Greenwood S . W ., Winter J . W ., Tindell

Hewson P . AI . Tyler . During the proceedings Bro . H . Hirst presented the retiring W . M . with a handsome P . M . ' s jewel , whioh had been subscribed for by the members

of the Lodgo . The jewel bore the following inscription : — " Presented to Bro . William Stratford by the members of the De la Pole Lodge , No . 1605 , aa a mark of their esteem aud appreciation for the zeal and ability displayed by him as their W . M ., 1889-90 . 4 October 1899 . " The recipient suitably responded . The customary banquet took

place afterwards . The Loyal aud Masonic toasts having been dnly honoured , Brother Hirst submitted the W . M . and Officers of the De la Pole Lodge , observing that he vvas confident they would do credit to the Lodge . The W . M . ( Bro . Peat ) responded , and said that both he and his Officers would do their best during fcheir year of

office . The S . W . and J . W . also acknowledged the toast . Bro . Ansdell proposed the Immediate Past Master , remarking that the members were perfectly satisfied with the manner in which Bro . Stratford hud carried oufc his duties . He had also been admirably supported . Bro . Stratford , in replying , said ho had had a most enjoyable year ,

and he had looked npon the work as a labour of love . He hoped thafc in future he should be able to be of more use to the Lodge than in the pasfc , and he promised fco do all in his power to further its interests . The W . M . proposed the Installing Officer , observing that they looked upon Bro . Ansdell as the Father of their Lodge . Brother

Ansdell replied , observing that it had always been a groat pleasure to him to do everything he possibly could for the welfare of the Lodge . The other toasts were the Sister Lodges , the Retiring Officers , the Visiting Brethren , and the Masonic Charities . The proceedings were of fche most pleasant and successful character .

THE monthly meeting was held on Tuesday , in the Freemasons ' Hall , Ingham Street , South Shields , Bro . John T . Ross W . AI . presiding , when Bro . Penney S . W . was unanimously elected W . M . for the ensuing twelve months . Bro . T . Coulson P . M . was re-elected Treasurer , and Bro . T . Potter Tyler . Bros . Reed and Snowdou were appointed Auditors . After Bros . ON Tuesday last , tho shooting taams of the four following Lodges , connected with Volunteer R' -girnetits in tho Metropolis , viz ., the South Middlesex , No . 858 ; tho Macdonald , No . 1216 ( 1 st Surrey Rifles ) ; tho London Riflo Brigade , No . 10 fi 2 ; aud the Queen ' s Westminster , No . 2021 , assembltd in tho Ritle Raugo , at Park , near Tottenham , for the third annual contest for tho poaso-miou of a handsome trophy presented by Bro . Major Lambert of tho Queen ' s

Westminster , with tankards for top scorers for annnal competition . The well-known zeal and liberality of Alajor Lambert , in all mabters relating to Freemasonry and Volunteering aro the best assurances that his gifts are well worth contesting for , and ib was no surprise to find that tho competitors and their friends numbered ab the firing points a lurga company of interested " shoofcisfcs" and lookers on . The

match was carried through under , in some respects , unfavourable circumstances , in that the unavoidable absence of one or two " crack shots" somowhat weakened some of the teams , and > the half gale , blowing from rear aud left , in fitful gusts , made " holding" more than customarily difficult . In tho result tho respective positions of the competing teams wero not altered from those of the previous year

the Qneeu ' s Westminster Lodge again taking first place , with ( 535 points ns against 63 fi on last occasion , tho London Rifle Brigade second , with 571 points as against 626 , tho Macdonald ( first Surrey Rifles ) third , with 549 points ns against 600 , ancl the South Aliddlesex fourth , with 495 as against 591 last year . Eight competitors were counted iu each team . Conditions as in first stage Queen ' s 1888 .

Bellaby , of the Queen ' s Westminster Lodge , has thc conduct of present arrangements , and , we presume , wonld be pleased to receive communications from such of our reactors as may Gaka interest iu Inter-Masonic Lodge rifle matches .

Glasgow Evening Netcx , speaks of the majority of tho Companions present ab tho Supreme Grand Chapter meeting being oblivious of tho existence of tho Early Grand Chapter . From this tho unthinking reader might infer that this body was of modern creation , whereas the very opposite is tho case , the Grand Encampment of the Temple , in Scotland , under whioh tho Chapter works , being tho oldest body in

Scotland working tho higher grades of Masonry , having done so long before the body styling itself " Supreme Grand Chapter" was dreamt of . Unfortunately , however , very few of the brethren aro sbudenbs of Alasonic histoiy , although the means of securing snch information is easily attainable , notably iu Burns ' s " History of the Knights Templars , " aud in D . M . Lyon ' s " History of Freemasonry iu Scotland . " Bro . Lyon is well qualified to treat upon the subject , the Early Grand , hiving , I believe , tho honour of claiming him as a child of its

Goldic-Tanbman , Provincial Grand Alaster , iu the chair , tho question of tho laying of the foundation stono of tha Eiffel Tower with Masonic honours , by tho Earl of Luthoin . was considered . Soveral members of the Lodgo objocted to

tlio proposal , or ; tho groundn thivt tho undertaking was a purely hiihiness spec-i : l : i : ion , out of harmony with the spirit and intent of Alat-onry , and thi-. s it was a degradation to fche Order to ask it to support such a movement . Tho movement is exciting considerable interest amongst the members of tho local fraternity ; ancl it is boldly asserted tint the Earl of Lathom , who is , next to tho Princo of Wales , the highest Masonic Officer in the world , must have been deceived , or he never would havo
