the hall , was a successful function , Loyal and Masonic toasts being agreeably varied by songs , & c , rendered by Bros . C . Wroe , Fred Eastwood , Buckley Carr , W . Brocklehurst W . M . 317 , Chas . Shaw I . P . M . 1147 , Edward Roberts P . M . 1459 , and W . H . Jones Org . 2447 . The toast of the Worshipful Master was proposed by the retiring Master Bro . Boyer who . after giving an interesting history , of his lengthened aquaintanco with his successor , said that no worthier man could have been placed in the chair of K . S ., and with all the fervency which he could command he wished him a happy and prosperous year .

Bro . Smith W . M . replied , thanking the Brethren for their cordial reception of thc toast of his health . Not only had Bro . Boyer spoken of him in very flattering terms , but several Provincial Officers had done the same , and at one period of his life he would have blushed at so much adulation , but fortunately he had got beyond the blushing stage . He appealed to the members to support the Lodge in evory possible way . It had had its ups and downs , which might perhaps have tended to weaken it , and they found with regret that the position indicated by tho great flourish of trumpets with

which it had been ushered into existence was difficult to maintain . He asked the Brethren to attend the meetings regularly and punctually , and thus strengthen the hands of their W . M . He advocated meetings of instruction , and promised that if any Brother wanted advice ( he was a lawyer , and only meant this Masonically ) ho would willingly give it without charge . This was a red-letter day of his life ; he could only refer to ono other— -the time when he appeared before Sir George Jessel , Master of the Rolls , to be sworn in by him .

Bro . Smith afterwards proposed the health of the Installing Master Bro . Jefferis , and alluded in terms of praise to the work which he bad done for the Manchester Lodge . Bro . Jefferis was an Officer of experience , and was well known , for he had taken every degree in Masonry except that of the Sky Fugle , where it was said the candidate was dropped through a skylight ; but so great was the enthusiasm of Bro . Jefferis , that he might even take that degree ultimately .

Bro . Jefferis , in response , thanked the Brethren for the manner in which they had recognised his efforts to assist them , and apologised for the lateness of his arrival in Lodge , explaining in brief the reason of his delay . Amongst other interesting things , be stated that this was his twenty-first year of Masonry , and during that period he had worked hard . For some time he had

kept record of the installation ceremonies performed by himself , but having reached the number ninety-nine he then gave up counting . He advised the Officers to make themselves perfect , so that they might step into his place , for he would be proud to retire , and see others do the particular work of installation .

The W . M . proposed the health of the I . P . M . and the rest of the Past Masters of and in the Lodge . Of Bro . Boyer he said he had been a generous donor to the various Charities , and he was well respected by all present . He also alluded to his recent illness , which had prostrated him for several weeks , and hoped he would now continue in good health for many years to come , and be enabled to wear the handsome jewel which had been presented to him in the Lodge earlier in the day . This jowel bore the following inscription : —

Presented to W . BBO . W . ALDEELEY BOYEB P . D . G . R . by thc Brethren of The Manchester Lodge , No . 2554 , in recognition of tbe valuable services rendered by him as W . M . 1898-9 13 th October 1899 .

He also spoke very highly of Past Masters Akorman , Wm . Charlton , J . P ., and Jefferis , who responded . Bro . Boyer I . P . M ., in reply , expressed himself as verymuch pleased with the kind remarks which had beon uttered about him . He had done his best to render his year of office a pleasant one , and if he had succeeded the satisfaction was mutual . The incoming Master might rely upon him to give whatever assistance he could , and in handing over the government of the Lodge to him he did it with perfect confidence . Other toasts followed .

Among the numerous visitors who signed the attendance book were Bros . Capt . Clement R . N . Beswicke-Royds Deputy Provincial Grand Master , Nathan Heywood P . M . 44 P . P . G . Reg ., G . L . Vaughan P . M . 1030 P . P . G . R ., Rev . W . II . Henley 341 1012 Prov . Gr . Chaplain , Robt . Thomson P . M . 44 , Edwd . Webb P . M . 161 1134 , A . Rottmayer I . P . M . 317 , J . S . Whitehead P . M . 317 , W . Pitcher P . M . 1357 , W . Brocklehurst W . M . 817 , H . A . Whaite J . D . 317 , R . G . Brew W . M . 222 , and Rev . J . G . French , M . A ., Chap . 1868 .

Brother Arthur Clowes Knight Smith , Worshipful Master oi the Manchester Lodge , is comparatively speaking a young Mason , yet from the period of his initiation into the Affability Lodge , No . 317 , on 2 nd March 1893 , he has takeu a very active part in several degrees other than the Craft . His abilities were soon recognised in his Mother Lodge , and he was placed

into Office , ultimately reaching that of Secretary , which he retained for three years . Only a couple of months ago tho Affability Lodge celebrated its Centenary , and by way of perpetuating the pleasant and interesting event Bro . Smith has , by special request , undertaken the duty of compiling its history for publication .

He was a founder of the Lodge of which he has just been installed W . M ., and was its first Secretary , whilst on the way to his present position he has been Treasurer , and Junior and Senior Warden . His connection with Royal Arch Masonry dates from April 1894 , when ho was exalted in the Affability Chapter , No . 317 . Here he became Asst . Soj ., and has acted in tho capacity of Scribe E . for the last three year * . He made his advent into Mark Masonry in April 1894 , by means of the

County Palatine Mark Lodge , No . 156 Tn this degree he is J . W . having passed through nearly every previous Office . In this degree , too , he is a Provincial Grand Steward , having been appointed at the meeting held in Manchester , o : i 19 th September last . He is connected with the Allied Degrees , having passed through all the stages , and in the Matier Council is I . P . M ., and present Grand Inner Guard , besides being Treasurer and Secretary to the Council .

The United Manchester Royal Ark Mariners Lodge , No . 34 , claims him as Treasurer and Scribe , and he is High Prelate of the Humphrey Chetham Rose Croix Chapter , No . 134 . As a founder and member of the Secret Monitor ( Champion Conclave , No . 20 ) he was Director of Ceremonies , and First Visiting Deacon , ancl in the matter of attainments seems equally qualified with Bro . Arthur Jefferis for the hypothetical Sk y Fugle degree .

As previously indicated , Bro . Smith is a lawyer , being a partner in the eminent firm of Boyer , Preston , and Smith , the first named being the Bro . Boyer whom he has iust succeeded in the chair of K . S .

BALACLAVA . WHERE is ihe British heart that does not beat With greater pride and greater joy to-day ? * When wandering minds recall that vast array That e'en could not six hundred men defeat ; Oh ! The wild glory of that dashing sweep

Through the dark valley of eternal fame ; And though in foreign graves our soldiers sleep , No one can rob thern oi their deathless name . What though the Russian guns ou every side On friend and foe hurled forth the deadly shell ?

Our heroes still maintained their onward ride Up the red gorge of Balaclava's hell . Nor turned their course nor checked their mad career Heedless of Death and strangers unto fear . * On 5 th November 1854 news reached England of the celebrated Charge of the Light Brigade at Balaclava , 25 th October 1854 .

INKERMAN . NIGHT I * And our soldiers slept 1 Their slumbers sound Were rudely broken by the cannon ' s roar ! Seven times their number hemmed them all around , Charging their front and flank and pressing sore . Worn out and scarce awake , our heroes fight Six times forced backwards , six times hurling back The foes who on that dark November night

In the deep mist led on their fierce attack . The field is lost 1 The battle * s to the strong , Five times ten thousand ' gainst a paltry seven They yield 1 They die I 'tis futile to prolong I The reckless strife I But hark I Oh 1 thank kind Heaven The French are here and storm the Russian ' s van , Winning for us and Right the Hill of Inkerman .

CHAS . F . FOBSHAW . * On the night of 5 th November 1854 , the British army , only 7 , 000 strong , were asleep in an unarmed redoubt near Inkerman .
