the sum , which could be repaid in accordance with a special vote at the next meeting of Provincial Grand Lodge . On his proposition , seconded by Bro . R . Clowes , this course was adopted , amid hearty applause . The Provincial Grand Master then addressed the meeting . He said he was pleased to find that though on two previous

occasions he had disappointed the Hastings Brethren , nothing had occurred to prevent his attending the Provincial Grand Lodge that afternoon . He added it was highly satisfactory to notice the steady increase of members in the Province , and made several suggestions as to limiting the number of initiations annually in each Lodge , and to the

granting of special dispensations , by which Masonic clothing could be worn at balls and other social gatherings . He also referred in graceful terms to the loss the Craft had sustained by the death of the late Pro Grand Master the Earl of Lathom , and to members of the Provincial Grand Lodge who had passed away since the last annual meeting . Amid hearty

applause he said it was his intention to lay the foundation stone of the new Masonic School for Boys at Bushey , in May , and to preside at the Annual Festival of the Boys School , at Brighton , in July . They were all , he said , deeply indebted to the Brethren of the Hastings Lodges for the admirable manner in which they had decorated the hall that day .

The meeting unanimously re-elected Bro . J . M . Reed Provincial Grand Treasurer for the ensuing year , and the Provincial Grand Master invested his Officers , as follow :

Bro . Alfred King suggested that the Brethren should mark their appreciation of the excellent work of Bro . J . M . Reed as Provincial Grand Treasurer , by doing their utmost to secure his election as Grand Treasurer of England . The Provincial Grand Lodge having been duly closed ,

about a hundred of the Brethren adjourned to the Castle Hotel , Hastings , where they sat down to an elegant banquet . The M . W . the Provincial Grand Master again presided , and was supported by his Deputy , Alderman Tuppenney ( Mayor of Hastings ) , Rey . E . R . Currie , Rev . F . B . Normandie , Rev . Oswald Thompson , Colonel Egerton , and others .

The toasts of the Queen and the Craft and the M . W . the Grand Master H . R . H . the Prince of Wales having been given by the Chairman and duly honoured , the Provincial Grand Master said he would like to introduce a toast not on the formal list . He said he was sure they would not , under the existing circumstances , like to forget the Army and Reserves ,

and would think of their hard work at the present time . He was also confident they would sympathise with the gallant officers and' men who were now serving their Queen and country under great difficulties , and with great bravery . No one in England liked war , but the present conflict had one bright side , for it had shown With what loyalty and devotion

her _ Majesty ' s subjects at home and in the colonies supported their Queen and country . They were proud of their army , and ready to provide for the widows and orphans of those who had fallen , or the wives of those who were fighting for the honour of their country . He was gratified to see the unanimity with which the Brethren expressed their wish to assist those who were suffering from the war . The toast having been honoured , Bro . Lieutenant-Colonel Wilson , in responding , said our soldiers were doing their best .

for their Queen and country , and had shown that they would not give in until they had fired their last shot . The " Bluejackets " were also showing excellent work , and the Reserve Force were ready to assist when called upon .

The Provincial Grand Master proposed the Officers of Grand Lodge Present and Past , and Bro . F . B . Normandie , in responding , referred to the Widows and Orphans' Fund , and said that Grand Lodge would doubtless make a handsome grant to it .

The Deputy Provincial Grand Master Bro . Sir W . T . Marriott next submitted the M . W . the Provincial Grand

Master of Sussex His Royal Highness the Duke of Connaught . All the Sussex Masons , he said , were proud to have the Duke of Connaught at their head . The Duke was not only interested in Freemasonry , but was also a great General , and took a personal interest in every individual soldier .

Referring to the war , he said they all respected and loved the army . Their sympathies were not confined to those on our narrow shores , but were extended to those 7 , 000 miles away . Ultimate success would attend the British Army . England must show strength , and then mercy and justice , and he

believed Boers and Britons would ultimately work peaceably together as Normans and Saxons did some 150 years after the Norman conquest . The toast was received with acclamation and musical honours , and cheers were given for the Duchess of Connaught .

His Royal Highness the Duke of Connaught , on rising to respond , was received with enthusiasm . He' said he was proud to be their Provincial Grand Master , and regretted that his many engagements prevented him from coming oftener among them . He -would continue to do his best to

promote Freemasonry , and was happy to find the Province steadily" increasing in numbers and good fellowship , and in the promotion of the Masonic Charities . Referring again to the war , he said he believed with Bro . Marriott that it would ultimately cement the racial feeling in South Africa .

The Prince then proposed the Deputy Provincial Grand Master Bro . the Right Hon . Sir W . T . Marriott , Q . C , P . G . D . ; and the Officers of Provincial Grand Lodge present and past . Bro . Marriott , he said , was well known to them ,

not only in Freemasonry , but in connection with his political services to his country . Personally , he owed him a deep debt of gratitude , and they all justly respected him , and thanked him for the great interest he took in the Craft .

Bro . Sir W . T . Marriott , in responding , said he was pleased to do his best for the Province . He was ably supported by the Officers , and they all hoped Bro . V . P . Freeman the Provincial Grand Secretary would be spared to them for many years longer .

Bro . the Rev . E . -R . Currie gave success to the Royal Masonic Institutions . He trusted all the Brethren would rally round their Provincial Grand Master when he presided next July at the Boys School Festival , and endeavour to make his year a record one .

Bro . J . M . McLeod acknowledged the toast , and alluded to the excellent work of Bro . J . M . Reed in furthering the Masonic Charities , and to the excellent support given to these Charities by the Sussex Masons . His Royal Highness the Duke of Connaught left at this

period of the gathering to catch his train , and the chair was then taken by Rev . E . R . Currie . The latter said he would also like to interpolate a toast . The Provincial Grand Lodge meeting that day had been a great success , and for the perfect

arrangements they were deeply indebted to the Hastings Brethren . He proposed the W . M . s of the three Hastings Lodges , Bros . Botley , Trollope , and Beer , who acknowledged the toast .

Bro . Botley gave the Visitors , to which Bro " . Alderman Tuppenney ( Mayor of Hastings ) responded . The remaining toasts were the Stewards , and the Tyler ' s Toast . During the evening a programme of music was sustained by Miss Eda Chaplin , Miss Mary Aukett , and Mr . A . Puttock .

fTIHE Quarterly Communication was held in the Free-JL masons' Hall , Edinburgh , on the 2 nd inst ., the Grand Master Lord Saltoun in the chair . The Grand Master moved that the standing orders be

suspended , and then that 100 guineas be voted to the fund for the relief of wives , widows , and orphans of Scottish soldiers serving , in the war in South Africa . The motion had been originally proposed by the Grand Secretary , and
