Four Brethren were on the agenda as candidates for raising , namely , Bros . H . G . Hopson , A . A . Fry , T . C .

Hassell , and George Fearn . The two first named answered the questions and ¦ were entrusted ; the Lodge was opened in the third degree , and they wero raised as Master Masons . At this point Bro . Lane Worshipful Master entered the Lodge , and was received in hearty manner . He procoeed to resume the Lodge in the second degree , and then examined the two latter Brethren , who having answered the questions were entrusted and retired . The Lodge was again advanced to the third degree , and the two members were raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason .

The W . M . resumed the Lodge to the first degree , and the ballot was taken , for Messrs . John William Ayres and Joseph Henry Pound , and proving unanimous in their favour , they were in due course initiated into the mysteries of ancient , Freemasonry . All the ceremonies were rendered in most able manner , and evidently made great impression on the different candidates .

The Lodge was again opened in the second degree , when the W . M . declared the Offices vacant , and he himself vacated his chair in favour of Bro . F . Kebbell I . P . M . Bro . W . J . Garrard W . M .-elect was presented by Bro . W . C . Lane W . A gentleman was proposed for initiation . The Auditors' report was received and adopted . The resignation of a Brother was accepted with regret , and after some other transactions the Lodge was closed , but not before the W . M . had received hearty good wishes from the Visitors . The Brethren retired for a short timo , while the Lodge room was

transformed into a banqueting room , which was done almost by magic , and thc Brethren having returned sat down to an excellent repast , the viands , wines , and cigars being all that could be desired , and reflecting great credit on the host Bro . Mears . Bro . W . Jageard superintended the proceedings , and looked well after the comfort of the

guests-After dinner the W . M . sounded his gavel and rose to submit the toast of the Queen , and prosperity to tho Craft , which was received with musical honours .

The proposition of the health of the Grand Master was greeted with loud applause , as was also that of the Grand Officers . Bro . W . C . Lane in well chosen terms proposed the health of the Worshipful Master , which ho ventured to think would be regarded as the toast of the evening . The W . M . had the respect and esteem of the Brethren , and he was sure that his conduct in the chair would meet with the satisfaction of the Lodge . He called upon the Brethren to give the W . M . an extra bumper , to which the Brethren most willingly attended .

Bro . Garrard on rising received quite an ovation . He said he could not sufficiently thank the Brethren for having elected him as Worshipful Master oi the Lodge . He was proud of tbe position , and most sincerely thanked all for having received tbe toast in so cordial a manner . The toast of the initiates was proposed from the chair in happy terms . The W . M . spoke of the great attention tbe newl y admitted Brethren had paid to the ceremony , and was sure they would make excellent Masons .

At this point Bro . George Kebbell P . M . Secretary , in excellent voice , gave the initiates pong , in which the Brethren most heartily joined . Bro . John W . Ayres said he was proud of now belonging to the ancient Order , and thanked the W . M . and Brethren for having accepted him as a Brother amongst them . He also thanked them all for their cordial reception .

Bro . Joseph Pound said he really did not know how to thank the W . M . Up till then he was in the dark , but in future he would endeavour to show then that their confidence in him had not been misplaced . He hoped to prove himself a worthy Mason . The next toast the W . M . had very much pleasure to submit was that of the I . P . M ., who , he said , had done his working during his year of office in an extraordinaril y good manner . He hoped he mi ght be able to perform the

Ar00801

work as well as his predecessor . He had vory much pleasure iu presenting to Bro . Lane the Past Master ' s jewel voted by the Lodge , and whioh he had so well earned , aud in doing so he hopsd Bro . Lane would wear it in good health and prosperity for many many years to come . The jewel bore the following inscription :

Presented to BBO . W . 0 . LANE , in appreciation of his efficient services as W . M . of the Beaconsfield Lodge during the year 1898-99 . The I . P . M . thanked the W . M . for his very kind remarks , and the Brethren for having received tho toast in so cordial a manner . He had been

trying to get a Past Master ' s jewel for the last twenty-five years ; it had always been his greatest ambition to get one , and he was proud of it now that he had won it . He should have liked to see the balance sheet in a little better condition , but the present Worshipful Master , he was su ~ e , would make up a better record . Again he most sincerely thanked the members for the handsome jewel . He desired also to thank the Officers of tho past year for having rendered him such excellent ' assistance during his term of office .

The toast of the visitors , of whom there were a large number , having been proposed and cordially received by the members , several of the guests suitably responded . The health of the Past Masters of the Lodge was replied to by all those Brethren present . The Officers and the Tyler ' s toast brought to a close an exceptionally enjoyable meeting .

During and after the banquet some excellent sones were rendered , especially those by the two charming sisters Misses Kebbell , who were deservedly encored ; also Bros . H . G . Hopson , A . Attwell , A . Neilson , A . Butlin , A . A . Fry , and , last but not least , Bros . F . and G . Kebbell .

ooo PEOVINCIAL . — : o : — ANGEL LODGE , No . 51 .

THK 164 th anniversary festival was held on Monday , 30 th ult ., at Colchester , and was largely attended by both members of the Lodge and visitors . The chief business of the meeting was the installation of Bro . Willoughby John Bean S . W ., the ceremonies appertaining to which were very ably performed by Bro . Claude E . Egerton-Green P . M . P . P . G . S . W .

Bro . Joseph Grimes P . M . P . P . G . S . of Works was re-elected to represent the Lodge on the Essex Provincial Charity Committee , and a hearty vote of thanks having been passed to the Installing Master the Lodge was closed . The customary banquet afterwards took place at the Cups Hotel , when between fifty and sixty Brethren sat down to an excellent repast well served by the Host and Hostess , Mr . and Mrs . Woodward . The new VV . M . Bro . W . J . Beau presided , and the proceedings were characterised throughout with great good fellowship .

The usual toasts were honoured , and in the course of the evening the new W . M ., in the name of the Lodge , presented a handsome gold jewel of Past Provincial Grand Steward to Bro . H . G . H . Elliott P . M . Bro . Bean , in making the presentation , said the members of the Lodge felt that some recognition was due to Bro . Elliott for the able and zealous way in which he had conducted the business of the Lodge , both during the

year he was Master , and also iu the succeeding year as I . P . M . They were all aware of the excellent work he had done , and their earnest wish was that Bro . Elliott might long continue to live amongst them and give the Lodge the benefit of his valuable assistance . For the information of the visitors present he might explaiu that it was not the custom of the Angel Lodge to

present a jewel to every Master as was done in many Lodges—he believed that only three jewels had been presented within living memory—so that they would see that the present gift was a very special mark of esteem . The W . M . then amid great applause pinned the jewel on to Bro . Elliott ' s breast , and read the inscription , as follows : —

Presented by the Brethren of the Angel Lodge , No . 51 , to W . BBO . H . G . H . ELLIOTT P . M . P . P . G . Steward as a mark of esteem , and in recognition of the zeal and ability with which he carried out the duties of W . M . and I . P . M ., 1897-9 . Colchester , 30 th October 1899 .

Bro . Elliott , who was received with quite an ovation , acknowledged the presentation in feeling terms . He said he had been taken completely by surprise , and could hardly find words in which to suitably acknowledge the kindness of the Brethren . He could assure them he should value the handsome jewel they had given him as one of his most treasured possessions , and he would be pleased at any time to do anything he could for the Angel Lodge .

During the evening the splendid string band of the 7 th ( Princess of Wales' ) Dragoon Guards played a beautiful selection of music , under the direction of Bro . Wille bandmaster , and Mr . Arthur Melville sang several songs in bis excellent style . Bro . C . Osmond P . M . P . P . G . O . was in charge of the musical arrangements .

LODGE OF INTEGRITY , No . 163 . THE regular meeting was held at the Freemasons' Hall , Cooper Street , Manchester , on Wednesday , 25 th ult ., Bro . Henry Bobert Yates W . M ., there being a good attendance . After the reading and confirmation of minutes Bro . Webb P . M . lectured on the first tracing board to a very appreciative audience . The Brethren afterwards adjourned to the festive board , a pleasant evening being spent .

LODGE OF SYMPATHY , No . 483 . A VEBY interesting meeting of this Lodge was held on Wednesday , at the Clarendon Hotel , Gravesend . Owing to the many calls upon his time , in connection with taking up the duties of Chief Magistrate of the Ancient Borough on the following day , the W . M . Bro . John Nathaniel Willis was unable to attend until the closing of the Lodge , which was therefore opened by the I . P . M . Bro . A . 3 . Walklin , who was supported by Bros . Spencer Bowen S . W ., Ernest Ingman J . W ., T . T . Hogg Treasurer , Arthur Bonaldson Sec , J . A . Gillett S . D ., J . Axoll J . D ., Percy Bowen I . G ., T . A . Mummery D . C , B .
