THE BOYS SCHOOL CENTENARY .

A PRELIMINARY meeting of the Brethren who have kindly undertaken the office of Steward at the •Festival ' inf celebration of the Centenary of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys was held on Tuesday , 30 t £ i November , and a ? the number was unprecedently " large , ' the Grand Hal ! of the Freemasons ' Tavern had to be engaged for the gathering .

Bro . Richard Eve was elected to the chair , and amongst the 200 Brethren who supported him were : Bros . J . W . Woodall and E . Terry P . G . Treasurers , John Strachan , Q . C , P . Dep . G . Reg ., Colonel Brymer , M . P ., Dep . P . G . M . Dorset , Major Le Feuvre Dep . P . G . M . Hants and Isle of

Wipt , Henry Smith P . D . P . G . M . West Yorkshire , Charles E . Keyser P . G . D . Treasurer of the Institution , „ W . F . Smithson and Clement Godson P . G . Ds ., James Stephens Dep . G . D . C , F . R . W . Hedges Secretary R . M . I . Girls P . G . S . B ., Russell and Attenborough P . A . G . D . Cs ., A . C Spaull ,

Hudson , H . A . Tobias , F . A . Powell , and J . M . McLeod Secretary of the Institution . The Chairman called upon the Secretary to report the negotiations with H . R . H . the Prince of Wales M . W . G . M ., in respect to the Festival over which he had graciously

consented to preside , and it transpired that H . R . H . had decided to hold the Festival at the Royal Albert Hall , in June next , and would fix the exact date early in 18 9 8 . The Secretary also reported that the number of Stewards up to the present time was over 1 , 000 and comprised no fewer than

twenty-one Provincial Grand Masters , eighty-two Grand Officers , and forty Ladies , with representatives from every Province , and from nearly one half of the London Lodges ,

necessitating this early meeting in order that an Executive Committee might be formed to make arrangements for the celebration , in accordance with the commands of H . R . H . the Chairman of the Festival .

' lllA resolution thanking His Royal Highness for the gracious intimation of his presidency was adopted . Bro . Eve then said he had a dual duty to perform which was alike pleasing and yet most painful . In graceful terms he alluded to the eminent services rendered by the Earl of

Lathom M . W . Pro Grand Master in negotiating with the Grand Master the matters referred to in the report presented by the Secretary , and he felt that their warmest thanks were due to His Lordship . But they were all saddened at the terrible blow which had befallen His Lordship so recently

as Tuesday last ,. 23 rd November , when his beloved wife had . met with a tragic death . The Countess of Lathom had proved herself a true friend to this Institution amongst many other Charities , and it would ever be a pleasing recollection of his and of many there present of the happy and

encouraginpaddress Her Ladyship gave to the Boys on the occasion of her graciously presenting the prizes at the School in 1891 . He would therefore propose : —That this Preliminary Meeting of the Board of Stewards for the Centenary Festival of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys desires to tender to the

Right Honourable the Earl of Lathom , G . C . B ., M . W . Pro Grand Master , its best thanks for the very important services he has rendered in the negotiations with the M . W . Grand Master on the question of His Royal Highness presiding at the Festival , and as to the locality for holding the same , and

further begs to express to His Lordship their deepest and most respectful sympathy in the sad calamity which has befallen him , in which all lovers of the Institution feel they have lost one of the best and most sympathetic of its friends . The resolution was seconded by Bro . Smithson , and the

meeting showed its sympathy with the Pro Grand Master in his affliction , all present rising in their places to give unanimous support to the motion . The meeting then proceeded to constitute the Board of Stewards by electing the various Officers .

It was resolved to invite Lord Lathom to take the position of President , and Lord Leigh that of Honorary Treasurer , those noblemen being the Senior Trustees . The Provincial and District Grand' Masters were appointed Honorary ' Presidents . Bros . Eve , Sir John Monckton , Fenn , Letchworth , Keyser , Colonel Brymer ,
