PRESENTATION TO CAPT . BESWICKE-ROYOS .
nnHE meeting of the Provincial Grand Craft Lodge of _ 1 _ East Lancashire , held at the Gentlemen ' s Concert Hall , Manchester , on Friday , 26 th ult ., ' was followed by a very interesting and imposing function , which took place at the Queen ' s Hotel . Many of fche Brethren in attendance at the former meeting , whose knowledge of fche science was simply
limited to their connection , with Craft Masonry , were unaware that the services rendered by their-Deputy Provincial Grand Master to the higher branches were about to be recognised in a substantial manner , otherwise the room at the premier Hotel , already crowded by an intensely enthusiastic audience , would have been totally inadequate for the purpose .
Sir Knight William Tyrer Sub Prior read letters of apology from Sir Knights Reginald Young , Basingstoke ; Samuel L . Buckley , Blackburn ; 0 . Eastwood , Bootle ; John S . Veevers , Burnley ; Col . F . R . Sewell , Cockermouth ; Capt . C . H . Garnett , Lancaster ; Edward Pierpoint , Liverpool ; George Galloway , Preston ; W . J . Thomson , St . Helens ; Rev . Chas . Courtney Bluett , Wigan ; J . D . Murray , Wigan ; and others .
The presentation , which took the form of a lovely silver salver , and a handsomely bound album containing upwards of 150 signatures , was in the hands of Col . Le Gendre N . Starkie Provincial Grand Master . Col . Starkie expatiated upon the prominent attributes of the recipient , who , he averred , was highly honoured and esteemed by all who knew him ; a piece of atavism which met with an ardent and hearty endorsement by
the audience . Continuing , Col . Starkie said that the mantle of the father ' s Masonic dignity had fallen upon the son whom they were there that evening to honour . Bro . Beswicke-Royds had made this particular kind of Masonic study his delight , and he was a notable example for all to follow . The more they knew him bhe more they appreciated him , for by his courtesy and Masonic conduct he had gained their approbation of his actions in every possible way .
The illuminated address , which was as follows , was then read :
CAPTAIN CLEMENT ROBERT NUTTALL BBSWICKE-EOYDS , of Pyke House , Littleborough , ''¦ ' ' G . C T . Very Eminent Prior of Lancashire , Deputy Provincial Grand Master
and Provincial Grand H . Bast Lancashire . Inspector General North Western District 33 ° November 1897 . The undersigned members of the Lancashire Provinco of Knight
Templars desire to express to you thair great appreciation of the eminent services you have rendered to that degree for a period of twenty-five years , and hope that many years may yet elapse before the relations between them and yourself ( which have been a source of so much pleasure and satisfaction ) are severed .
They trust that the Testimonial , which it is now their privilege to present to you , may remain as a permanent , though slight expression of their feeling of regard towards you . We have nofc space for all the signatories attached to the address , but give a few of the more prominent ones . They are as follow : Bros . Colonel Le Gendre N . Starkie , Rev . C . Hesketh
Knowlys , F . N . Molesworth , John Chadwick P . P . G . Secretary , Major John Booth , N . A . Earle , A . L , Dickens , Dr . Thomas D . Foreman , James Heelis , Alfred Hopkinson , C . E . Hindley , IV B . Wilkinson , ' Captain Henry Thomas , Joseph Leech , Colonel Henry J . Bobinson , Fritz Reiss , H . L . Hollingworbh , and Charles Schuster .
Colonel Starkie , continuing , said he endorsed every word which had been read , and he hoped that Providence would extend to Bro . Boyds health and strength to move among them for many years to come . The Right W . Provincial Grand Master then presented fche silver salver , with that fervency of expression
which demonstrated the abiding standard of his friendship , and with an apt choice of language which is one of his especial felicities , concluding with this hope , — " May you and yours live to use this beautiful salver , and may you live to do your duty as your respected father performed his before you . "
The inscription on the plate , a variant from that in the album , was as subjoined :
