After the Loyal and Masonic toasts had been honoured , an excellent entertainment , under the management of Bro . S . W . Wright , wasmuch appreciated .

A T the annual festival , held in the Masonic Hall , Northgate , Elland ; orf xi . the 2 nd inst ., the Brethen installed as their Worshipful Master for the ensuing year Bro . S . A . Radcliffe , of Mirfield . On behalf of the Brethren , the new W . M . presented the-retiring W . Mv Bro . Cooper Kitchen a fine Past Master's jewel , bearing a representation of the coat-of-arms of the Savile family .

A banquet was provided , and a lengthy toast list was gone through ; including the usual Loyal and Masonio sentiments .

ASHBURY LODGE , No . 1459 . THE annual meeting and festival of St . John in connection with the above Lodge , which took place at the Justice Birch Hotel , West Gorton , on Thursday , the 18 th ult ., was in every way an unqualified success . Proceedings commenced at an early hour , the Lodge being opened by Bro . John Jee W . M ., and advanced to the second degree . A Board of Installed Masters was formed , the principal chair being occupied by Bro . George W . Davies P . M . as Installing Master , Bro . W . H . Beastow as S . W ., Bro . S . C . Eichardson as J . W ., and Bro . William Drabble as I . G . ¦

Bro . John Townley Trotter S . W . Worshipful Master-elect having been introduced by Bro . William Bee P . M . P . P . G . A . D . C . ( Installing Deacon ) , the ceremony of installation was performed by Bro . Davies in a most excellent manner , he being ably assisted by Bro . Bee in the proclamations , address to the Master , and investiture of the principal Officers ; and also by Bros . Eichardson , Righton , Jee , and Drabble in other parts . The following Officers 1 1

were appointed andinvested : Bros . ' A . E . Burgess S . W ., H . E . Massie J . W ., W . H . Beastow P . M . Treasurer , I . Hurlow Secretary , G . Eobinson S . D ., G . Watson J . D ., W . Bee P . M ., & c . D . C , G . W . Davies P . M . A . D . C , T . Downs Organist , 0 . B . Phillips I . G ., A . Barber , W . H . Thompson , M . Pogson , and J . Wilkinson Stewards . Bro . Davies was again elected the Charity Representative of the Lodge . The

customary banquet was served at the close of the Lodge business , when thirty-four members of the Lod ge and fifteen Visitors sat down . The usual Loyal and Masonic toasts having been honoured , Bro . Beastow , in proposing the health of the W . M ;; spoke in strong terms of approbation of the Masonic ability and character of Bro . Trotter . He well remembered his being proposed by Bro . Davies nine years ago that night , and after being initiated by the then W . M . ( Bro . Wallworth , who , after a

serious illness of nearly twelve months , was present that night to do honour to his first initiate , and who , he was glad to see had so far recovered as once more to visit his Lodge ) , filled in a most satisfactory manner almost evory office in the Lodge . He did not hesitate to predict that Bro . Trotter would , in the most important duties and responsibilities devolving upon him , prove himself equal to the worthy and distinguished Brethren who had preceded him in the chair of King Solomon .

The W . M ., in responding with some feeling , said he thanked Bro . Beastow very much for the many kind things which he had said of him , and he highly appreciated the hearty manner in which the toast had been received by so large a gathering of his Masonic Brethren . Continuing , he said , "I feel constrained at this stage to refer to a Brother who , for many years past has taken part in the installation ceremonies of this Lodgeand

, who would no doubt have done so again to-day , but during the year a sudden and fatal illness has taken him away from us—we trust to join'the Grand Lodge above . I refer to Bro . Abbott P . P . G . D . C , who was well-known and very highly esteemed by all who knew him . As to any Masonic ability which I possess I can only say that during my year of office I will do

my best , and no Brother can do more . It is also my intention , in conjunction with some of my Past Masters , during my year of office to form a Chapter in connection with this Lodge , which now numbers fifty-two members , several of whom have intimated their desire to become Boyal Arch Masons . "

The W . M . now proposed the health of the I . P . M . and Past Masters of the Lodge , and before asking the I . P . M . to respond , Bro . Davies , on behalf of the members of the Lodge , presented to Bro . Jee a Past Master ' s jew ' el , for services rendered as W . M . of the Lodge for the year just ended . In doing he said it had for

so many years been the custom of the Ashbury Lodge to recognise the services of its W . M . in a tangible way . The position of W . M . had its cares and responsibilities , independent of its ceremonial aspect , and it was a fitting recognition tbat he had passed through with a successful record . The jewel was inscribed :

Presented by the Brethren to BRO . P . M . JOHN JEE , . for services rendered as W . M . of the Ashbury Lodge , No . 1459 . —1896-7 . 18 th November 1897 . Bro . Jee , in responding , thanked the Brethren for the handsome jewel presented , and for the toast of his and the Past Blasters'health . The

year , while a success , had in addition been somewhat gloomy , from the fact that two of tbeir Past Masters had passed away from the earthly Lodge , and the host of the house , a Brother whose services to the Lodge as its caterer had won for him a high reputation , had also been removed . These events had necessarily largely interfered with tho festive part of the year ' s meetings ; in other respects he considered the year had been most successful .

The proceedings were enlivened by songs in capital style by Bros ' Bentley , Griffiths , Cooper ( W . M . Truth , No . 1458 ) , Burgess , Beastow a cornet solo by Bro . Jackson ; by the Lyric Banjo trio Bros . Jee , Jackson , and Riley ; and a pianoforte recital by Bro . Simpson . The accompanist was Bro Tilsley .

Besides those already mentioned there were present •Bros G A Vaughan P . G . Reg . ( EX . ) , Dr . Thomas D . Foreman P . P . S . G . D . ' ( EL ) ' Uttley P . G . J . D ., Hassell P . P . G . D . ( W . L . ) , Walter Newton P . S . G . D . Ches ) ancl P . P . J . G . D . ( E . L . ); also Bros . Sheard W . M . 2464 , Jones W . M 581 and Middleton W . M . 1077 ; Past Masters Wallworl h , Wright , and Hughes Bros . Cooper . Moss , Tunstall , Arrnitage , Finlay , Haw , Parry , Spence ! Tilsley , Dyson , Palmer , and Lord .

Reports Of Meetings.

A cordial vote of thanks was accorded to the Installing Master , and a similar compliment was paid to the outgoing Master Bro . Amys , whose absence was much regretted , particularly as it was due to the loss of his wife , and from whom a kind letter was read acknowledging the sympathy of the Brethren for him in his severe bereavement and the assistance he had received from them during his year of office .

A vote of sympathy , proposed by the W . M ., was passed to the Earl of Lathom . The Brethren afterwards sat down to an excellent banquet provided by Bro . Henley . This was followed by the usual round of Masonic toasts , the health of the new Master and of the Installing Master being cordially honoured . A " Happy returns " telegram was forwarded from the Lodge to the Princess of Wales , in recognition of her birthday .

MORECAMBE LODGE , No . 1561 . AT the annua ! dinner of the Lodge Bro . William Duff P . P . G . St . W ., in making the presentation , referred to the services Bro . Duff had' rendered . He had been connected with the Lodge for over twenty-two jears , aud during that time he had filled various Offices with satisfaction . Bro . Duff briefly responded .

At the business meeting Bro . Herbert Higgins was installed as Worshipful Master for the year , and the other Officers were appointed .

ALBERT VICTOR LODGE , No . 1773 . THE annual meeting and festival of St . John took place at the Town Hall , Pendleton , on Friday , 19 th ult ., Bro . Thos . M . Brown W . M . The latter having duly opened the Lodge in the first and second degrees , performed the ceremony of installing Bro . Win . Lambert S . W . into the

chair of K ; S .- The proclamations in the E . W . and S . were undertaken by Bro . J . Harrop P . M . P . P . G . D ., whilst the address in the N . E . to the W . M : was rendered by Bro . Saml . Statham P . M . P . P . G . Treas ., that in the W . to the Wardens by Bro . Wm . Mosley P . M ., and that in the S . to the Brethren generally by Bro . F . Townson P . M .

The working tools in the several degrees were presented by Bro . T . T . Sefton P . M ., and Bro . R . Duxbury P . M . P . P . G . S . B . invested the following Officers : — Bros ; W : T . Sa'lfdrd ) , W : Lancaster 287 P . P . G . D ., E . Williams 325 P . P . G . Supt . of Works , J . W . Millward 992 P . P : G . Supt . of Works , Peter Jackson 368 P . G . J D . Millington 1345 , Thomas Syms 2584 , and others .

The usual Loyal and Masonic toasts were honoured , and a very good programme of entertainment was gone through , contributed by Bros . Townson , Bradbury , Hart , Harwood , 'Horricks , Millington , Harry S . Daniels S 25 , and R . W . Nuttall 163 :

Bro . Brown I . P . M . proposed the health of the Worshipful Master , saying that one advantage in leaving the chair of K . S . was the obligation of proposing the health of the successor to that honour . He did that with pleasure , having-known Brb . Lambert for many years . The Lodge had conferred upon itself an honour in placing him in the chair . He had endeavoured to carry outall the principles of Freemasonry , had worked ' assiduously , and had tried

to prove to the Brethren that there was something worthy in Freemasbnry : The happiness of the Brethren had been entrusted to his care , and he would do his best for them , of that he was assured . Placed in the chair as he was , he would be a shining light , and one whom they could ever look up to for comfort and guidance . The Brethren had imposed upon him a great responsibility , but he would do all that was possible to fill that position in a worthy manner .

Bro . Lambert W . M . responded . He thanked them most cordially and sincerely , and accepted their congratulations . It had been one of his aspirations from the time of his initiation to occupy the chair of K . S ., and he felt grateful for being- installed into that position . When he remembered the achievements of the various Past Masters he felt afraid to tackle duties which they had so efficiently performed . If , however , he tried to do his

utmost he would have their assistance , and he hoped their fraternal love also , for it was the latter which made Masons useful to all mankind . The true Masonic spirit was exemplified in doing kindnesses , it was manifested in self-denying natures , and by performing every possible good to the outside world . This kindly spirit was exemplified in the lives of many in that room .-Bro . Lambert spoke of the Past Masters , who , having done their work ,

were relegated to one side , being ornaments , or as he expressed it— -pillars of beauty . Among these ornaments they had deposed one that night who , in a variety of circumstances , had filled a great office in their midst ' . ' Biro : Brown might be congratulated upon the fact that he had seen the Lodge through a most memorable year in its history , and the Brethren wished to mark this in a substantial manner . He then requested the I . P . M . to accept on behalf of the Lodge a Past Master's jewel , which bore the following inscription : —

Presented to BRO . THOMAS BEOWN P . M ., By the Brethren of the Albert Victor Lodge , No . 1773 . 19 th November 1897 . Bro . Brown responded . He said he valued very highly their good feeling and their outward testimonial—the jewel . If he had earned their

goodwill he was glad , but apologised for failings and shortcomings , and the Officers of the Lodge who had tried to support him in his position in the chair he thanked for the kindly way they liad overlooked the same . He knew nothing bettej calculated to help a man in the battle of life than the knowledge that there were those who sympathised with him . He hoped his successor . would have as happy a time as himself , for he fully deserved it . o . o o
