Teetotalers And Freemasonry.

TEETOTALERS AND FREEMASONRY .

THE annual treat to the old folks , which the Freemasons of Weston-super-Mare are in the habit of giving on or about New Year ' s Ever does not in any way wane in popularity—in fact , the gathering is so social in character and the usual conventionalities of ordinary tea-drinking assemblies are so

marked by their absence , that everbody looks upon the meeting as a sort of "free and easy , " the result being that all who participate in the tea and entertainment enjoy themselves most thoroughly . Although the Masons , in accordance with the spirit of their Order , provide for their guests in the most hospitable

manner , supplying " an elegant sufficiency of ale and tobacco for those who care for such things , and just as bountiful a quantity of lemonade and other non-intoxicants for total abstainers , so much discretion is exercised on the part of the

Brethren and so much self-respect on that of the guests that no conduct of an objectionable nature results , and everybody is allowed to enjoy himself or herself according to their own inclinations , every person being made happy .

Certain teetotal folk , however , seek to have " a finger in the pie" and , of course with the best intentions , have approached some of the Brethren of the mystic tie to see whether they cannot induce them to abandon " the drink " from this festive

gathering , or if not , they ask the committee to separate " the sheep from the goats , " and set apart one portion of the hall for those who drink beer , and the other part for those who indulge in

gingerbeer . Some of the Brethren regard this attempted interference as downright impudence , others smile good-naturedly and say that such a proceediug would not be in keeping with the spirit of freedom which the Order professes to encourage .

Those who pay the Piper generally have the right to call the dance , and if , as the teetotal folk say , on the ground " that evil communications corrupt good manners , " some persons are kept

from accepting the invitation which the Freemasons extend irrespective of creed , age , or politics , they should show their practical sympathy with those who may not be able to withstand temptation , and provide for them a similar tea and entertainment
