the cause of Freemasonry , as he had been a member of the Craft for thirtyfive years , and had always endeavoured to practice its genuine principles and tenets . He should regard the jewel as a gift of honour from tbe Brethren , to which his children might refer in years to come , when he had passed away .

Bro . Lewis Lazarus , as the oldest Vice-President , acknowledged tho toast of the Lodge of Joppa Benevolent Fund , and remarked that being a Centenary Lodge they always tried to show a good example . In their Benevolent Fund they had been emulated by other Lodges , for they were able to do a vast amount of good ; applicants were relieved , others had been started in business , and after a time had been enabled to repay the money advanced and had been restored to the Lodge deeply gratified for tho

assistance rendered . The subscription was from 10 / 6 to five guineas , the latter sum constituting the donor a Vice-President , and he was glad to announce a list , to which the Initiates , the W . M . and others had contributed , amounting to upwards of £ 10 . Several other toasts followed and the proceedings terminated at a late hour . During the evening a capital programme of songs and music was given under the direction of Bro . Henry Prenton .

Bro . M . Seigenberg the new W . M . was born in London , 18 th September 1853 , and was initiated into Freemasonry in the Lodge of Joppa in 1885 . He was also one of the founders of the William Shurmur Lodge , No . 2374 ; and is now P . S . of the Joppa Chapter . O O 0

AT the regular meeting of the Lodge , held at Winchester , Brother E . Hinxman S . W . was elected Master for the ensuing year , Bro . W . H . Jacob was selected as Treasurer and Bro . Sims Tyler , the latter Brother has filled that Office in the Lodge for upwards of twenty years . O 0 0

FOUNDATION LODGE , No . 82 . THE installation festival was held on Thursday , 27 th ult ., the Feast of St . John the Evangelist , and was attended by a numerous body of Brethren including four present and past Officers of Grand Lodge , all members of the Foundation Lodge , and many Officers of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Gloucestershire .

Bro . the Eev . C . E . Lefroy Austin was the Worshipful Master-elect , and he was installed to the chair by the retiring W . M . Bro . J . L . Tickell , assisted by the Dep . Prov . G . M . Bro . E . V . Vassar-Smith P . G . D . and other Past Masters of the Lodge . Having been installed , the W . M . invested his Officers for the ensuing year .

RESTORATION LODGE , No . 111 . ON Thursday , 27 th ult ., at Darlington , Brother W . G . Brown S . W . was installed by Bro . Eichard Luck as the Worshipful Master for the year . A banquet was subsequently held . O O 0

PERPETUAL FRIENDSHIP LODGE , No . 135

ON Monday , 7 th inst ., at the Eoyal Clarence Hotel , Bridgwater , the installation took place of Bro . Eadford Garton , as successor to Bro . A . Basil Cottam . The installation ceremony was very ably and impressively performed by Bro . E . C . Else D . P . G . M . and P . G . D . England , in the presence of a large muster of the members and several visiting Brethren .

At the banquet which followed , under the presidency of the newly installed W . M ., Bro . E . C . Else , in responding to the toast of Grand Lodge , gave some interesting statistics relating to the Masonic charities . The income during the past year represented a grand total of £ 75 , 990 . He thought this was a sufficient answer to the frequent question , " What is the good of Freemasonry . " 0 0 0

THE annual festival and installation took place on Thursday , 3 rd inst ., when there were present between seventy and eighty members of tho Lodge and Visiting Brethren , including twenty-seven Masters and Past Masters . Brother W . Humphry was the W . M .-elect , and the ceremony of installation was conducted by tho retiring W . M . Brother W . B . Thomas . A beautiful Past Master ' s jewel was afterwards presented to Bro . Thomas by

the Worshipful Master , on behalf of the members of the Lodge . The installation banquet took place at thc Grand Hotel , where an excellent repast was served in the handsome dining-room . Thc brilliancy of the electric lights , and the softer glow of thc fairy lamps among the flowers and epergnes upon the dining tables , made the room look exceedingly pretty .

FRIENDSHIP LODGE , No . 202

THE annual meeting was held at Devonport , on Thursday , 27 th , when Bro . S . Martin was installed by the Past Masters of the Lodge and a strong Board of Installed Masters . Thc following sums wero voted : — £ 5 5 s to the Fortescue Annuity Fund ; £ 5 5 s to the Boyal Albert Hospital * , £ 2 2 s to the Devonport Blanket Society * , and £ 1 Is to the Devonport Coal Society ,

HARMONY LODGE . No . 272

THE Brethren celebrated the festival of St . John on the 8 th , at Boston . They assembled in the Masonic Hall , in the afternoon , when Bro . T . Beaulah was installed Worshipful Master for the ensuing year , the installation ceremony being performed by Bro . J . H . Tasker . The usual banquet took place at the Peacock and Eoyal Hotel in the evening .

ON Thursday , 3 rd inst ., a very large number of Brethren assembled at the Masonic Hall , Eegister Square , Beverley , to witness the installation of Bro . J . E . Lane . The Lodge may indeed claim to be " antient , " as it has now entered

upon the 102 nd year of its existence , says the " Hull Daily News . " The Eight Hon . the Earl of Londesborough , it will be remembered , was the Worshipful Master during the centenary year . But although so antient it is distinctly modern in being up-to-date in its method of conducting the ritual and the general working of the mystic Craft .

Bro . Lane ' s popularity was unmistakable , judging from the reception ha received at the hands of the Brethren of his Mother Lodge , as well as from the distinguished list of Brethren who were present to do honour to the newly-exalted Brother . The ceremony was fittingly performed by Brother Tom Turner P . M . P . P . G . Eeg . ( ex-Mayor ) and Bro . M . M . Westerby P . P . G . D . C .

The Lodge having been closed , the Brethren adjourned to the Beverley Arms Hotel , where Bro . David Morley purveyed tho annual banquet in recherche style . The Loyal and Masonic toasts wero honoured , and the proceedings were most successful .

Bro . McLeod made a powerful appeal on behalf of the Institutions , in responding for tbe toast of the Charities , and he was listened to with great attention , as was Bro . A . H . Hale , in submitting that toast .

THREE GRAND PRINCIPLES LODGE , No . 441 .

THEEE was an unusually large muster at the fifty-ninth installation meeting of the Lodge at the Lion Hotel , Cambridge , on Monday , 7 th inst ., the attendance numbering upwards of one hundred Brethren . Bro . James Catling S . W . was installed as W . M . for the year , by his predecessor in the chair Brother P . H . Young P . P . G . Swd . B ., who was subsequently presented with a P . M . ' s jewel on behalf of the Lodge by the Deputy Provincial Grand Master Bro . Eev . J . H . Gray . There were thirtytwo Fast Masters present at the Board of Installed Masters .

LODGE OF INSTRUCTION , No . 581

THE regular meeting was held at tbe Old Boar ' s Head Hotel , Manchester , on Thursday , 13 th ult ., Brother J . W . Abbott P . M . 1030 P . P . G . D . C . Preceptor . The Lodge was opened at 7 * 45 by Bro . George Parker I . P . M . 1083 , and after the minutes had been confirmed a ballot was taken for Bros . Hyman Lewis Falk , Yarborough Lodge , 633 ; Caradoc Owens , St . Thomas , 992 ; F . T . Hair , Eichmond , 1011 ; and A . E . Bishop , Strangeways , 1219 ; tbe same being successful in each case .

Bro . Geo . W . Davies W . M . 1459 then assumed the chair , and the ceremony of Initiation was rehearsed , with Bro . Sam . Butterworth 1011 , as candidate . Tho address in the N . E . was given by Bro . H . J . Harrison S . W . W . M .-elect 581 . Bro . Parker having resumed the chair , the election of Preceptor for the ensuing year took place , which resulted unanimously in favour of Bro . Abbott , who therefore retains his position .

Bro . Abbott acknowledged the honour in appropriate terms , hoping that ho would continue to merit a continuance of their approval . Upon the ballot being taken for Treasurer and Secretary , Bros . G . T . Lenard S . W . 1077 , and Alfred Hebden P . M . 1458 P . P . G . D . D . C . were unanimously re-elected to the respective positions . These Brethren also expressed their thanks for the confidence reposed in them by the members of the Instruction Lodge .

Bros . William Bee P . M . 1459 , and G . E . Berry 1219 , were appointed Auditors . It was decided to celebrate the Annual Festival of St . John on Thursday , 10 th inst ., the Officers of the Lodge , together with Bros . Davies and Harrison being empowered to make the neccessary arrangements for the same . Brother Davies , who had again resumed the chair , closed the Lodge in peace and harmony at 9 * 20 .
