Visitor—Bro . M . Hart . The Lodge wiva opened in the first degree by the W . M ., and a ballot taken for Mr . Alexander Kirk wood , who was desirous of becoming a member . The ballot having been declared in his favour , Mr . Kirkwood was prepared and duly initiated by the W . M . The next business was the election of Worshipful

Master for the ensuing year , and the choice fell upon Brother Alfred de Botton . Brother Mamelok was re-elected Treasurer , Bro . Board was selected aa Charity representative , and Bros . A . de

Botton and J . K . Heywood were appointed Auditors . A Tyler was also appointed . At the festive board whioh followed , the usual Loyal and Masonio toasts were honoured , and a very pleasant evening was ¦ pent .

ARNOLD LODGE , No . 1799

THE monthly meeting of the above Lodge was held at the Masonio Hal ) , Walton-on-Naze , on Tuesday , the 1 st inst . There was a good muster of the brethren present , viz .: —Bros . W . E . Sutton W . M ., J . M . Scarlett I . P . M ., J . Harman S . W ., H . Finer as J . W ., W .

Randall S . D ., J . R . Chamberlain J . D ., W . W . Wright I . G ., W . Purkis Organist ; P . M . ' s—Bros . Dorling , Scott , Wilkinson , E . Osmond Treasurer , R . Scott Secretary , and several Members and Visitors . The Provincial Grand Secretary , Bro . T . J . Railing P . G . AD . of C , honoured them with a visit . Mr . Collins was initiated into the Order .

The whole ceremony was most beautifully and impressively delivered by the Worshipful Master . A petition to fche Fond of Benevolence was then presented for signature , on behalf of the widow of a member of the Lodge who died at sea , whilst undergoing amputation of the fingers nnder chloroform . After closing of the Lodge the brethren were invited to dine wifch the W . M ., and a most

delightful banquet was served , this being the first regular meeting of tbe Arnold Lodge in its old home . The Provincial Grand Secretary , in replying to thc toast of his health , mentioned the fact that the consecration of the Arnold Lodge by Lord Skelmersdale was the first one after his appointment as Provincial Grand Secretary , and he had always taken a great interest in the welfare of the Lodge .

He compared the difference in the nnmber of Lodges in the Province since the present Provincial Grand Master , Lord Brooke , had taken office . The proceedings of the evening were most enjoyable , several of the brethren contributing to the harmony by giving some good songs . Bro . Sutton the W . M . has the good wishes of all his members for a happy and prosperous year of office .

HADRIAN LODGE , No . 1970

ON Tuesday afternoon , the 1 st inst ., thc annnal meeting of this Lodge was held at the Freemasons' Hall , South Shield ? , when there was a very large attendance of Past Masters and members . The chair was occupied by the Worshipfnl Master ( Bro . Harland ) . The Freemasons' Hall , very prettily decorated , was the scene of a gathering only second to a Provincial Grand Lodge gathering , and as

place of meeting is not equalled by any other Masonic Hall in the Province of Durham . The principal business of the meeting was tbe installation of the Worshipful Master for tbe ensuing year , Brother Henderson S . W ., and the appointment of Officers for tbe year . The W . M . elect was presented by Bro . Marshall to the Installing

Master , Bro . Ross . The ceremony of installation was very admirably cond noted by Bro . Ross , and the mnsical portion was rendered by the ohoir , nnder the direction of Bro . Young . The following were invested as the Officers for the year : —Bros . Ross I . P . M ., Thomas S . W ., Farmer J . W ., Rev . Francis Hanmer Webb-Peploe Chaplain ,

a handsome P . M . ' s jewel . Tbe jewel bore a suitable inscription , and was of unique design . Bro . G . Harland P . M . suitably acknowledged thc gift . After the conclusion of the Lodge business , the annual Festival was held at the Golden Lion Hotel , King Street , where a splendid repast was served under the management of Brother G . Happe . PROVINCIAL GRAND LODGE OF ABERDEENSHIRE EAST .

THE annual meeting of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Aberdeenshire East was held within the Solomon Lodge Rooms , Fraser . burgh , on Wednesday evening , tbe 26 th ult . Bro . Wm . Boyd Prov . Grand Master presided , and was snpported by Bro . Colonel Skene of Lethenty Depute Prov . G . Master , and by Bro . R . Mirrlees P . M . Forbas Lodge , Rosehearty , in the unavoidable absence of Bro . C . F . Gordon , of Cairness , tho Substitute Prov . Grand Master . There were about

seventy brethren from the various Lodges in the Province present . The Right Worshipful the Provincial Grand Master in addressing the Lodge , referred in feeling terms to the death , since his election last year as Junior Warden of the Lodge , of Bro . Alexander Malcolm , Fraserburgh , and proposed the following , motion thereanent : — " The Lodge mourns the removal by death , since the last meeting ,

of Brother Alexander Malcolm , who for a number of years faithfull y discharged the duties of R . W . M . of Solomon Lodge , and who endeared himself to all who had opportunities of estimating the virtues of his private life . That the foregoing resolution be duly recorded on the minutes , aud that an extract thereof be transmitted by the Secretary to the relations , with an expression on behalf of the

body of its deep sympathy with them in their bereavement . " The Provincial Grand Master briefly dealt with what had transpired during the year and , referring to the progress made , stated that no fewer than 70 members had joined the Brotherhood since last annual meeting , and that 90 regular meetings and 39 special meetings had been held by the respective Lodges . Commissions were issued in

favour of Bros . W . Rennie R . W . M . Solomon Lodge , Fraserburgh , as Senior Warden , and Dr . D . Trail , St . Andrew ' s Lodge , New Pitsligo , as Junior Warden . The Treasurer ' s financial report , which was considered satisfactory , showed a slow but gradually increasing revenue . New bye . laws for Lodge St . James , No . 256 , Peterhead , and alterations on existing bye-laws of Keith Lodge , No . 56 , Peterhead , were

sanctioned . The following elective Office-bearers were then elected : Bros . Penney , Peterhead , Treasurer , Scott , Striohen , S . D ., Macpherson , Peterhead , J . D . ; Hird , Peterhead , Architect ; Gordon , New Pitsligo , Jeweller ; Robertson , Peterhead , Bible Bearer ; Burnett , Peterhead , Director of Ceremonies ; Hendry , Fraserburgh , Sword Br . ; W . Balfour , Rosehearty , Director of Musio ; G . Brown jun ., New Pitsligo , Standard Bearer ; W . B . Wynesa , Striohen , Steward ; Tripp ,

Fraserburgh , I . G . ; P . Greig , New Pitsligo , Tyler . It was announced the next annual meeting would be held at New Pitsligo . Tbe Lodge waa thereafter closed and the brethren adjourned to Batohan ' s Hall and partook of supper , purveyed by Bro . Rennie , Royal Hotel . The company was under tue presidency of the Provincial Grand Master , Bro . Burnett , Keith Lodge , Peterhead , being croupier . The Masonio toasts were duly pledged and a pleasant evening was spent .

PROVINCIAL GRAND LODGE OF DUMFRIESSHIRE .

' PHE Earl of Haddington Graud Master Mason of Scotland , paid J- an official visit , on the 1 st inst ., to the Provincial Grand Lodge of Dumfriesshire , uccompanied by Sir Charles Dalrymple , M . P ., Depute Grand Master , Lord Salfcoun Substitute Grand Master , Bro . D . Murray Lyon Graud Cashier , and other Office Bearers . There was a large representation of the ten Lodges forming the Province , the beantiful ball belonging to the Order in Dumfries being quite

filled . Bro . F . E . Villiers Provincial Grand Mastor presided , and the other Provincial Office Bearers present included Bros . Johnstone Donglas Provincial Grand Depute Grand Master , E . Brook younger , of Hoddam , Provincial Substitute Grand Master , and John Robson Provincial Grand Secretary . The Lodge having been opened in the first degree , tho Grand Lodge deputation was received with

impressive ceremonial . The books of the Lodge having been examined , Lord Haddington congratulated the Provincial Grand Master and his brother Officers on the excellent working of the Lodge , and on tbe healthy and prosperous condition of Masonry in the Province . He recalled briefly the history of the Provincial Grand Lodge , whioh was ereoted in 1736 under the name

of the Southern Province , and had as ita first Master Bro . Crosbie , Advocate , son of a Provost of Dumfries , aud tbe prototype of Sir Walter Scott ' s " Pleydell . " He dwelt on the connection with the Province of the next Grand Master , Bro . Fergusaon , of Craigdarroch , also an ornament of the legal profession , the contemporary and friend of Burns , and victor in the historical drinking contest at Friars '

Carse , celebrated in the poem of "The Whistle . They had also connected with this district a Masonio souvenir of Burns in fche roll of the defunct Lodge of St . Andrew ' s , which was signed by the poet in 1788 . He congratulated tbe Province on its rich historical association ? , and on its good fortune in possessing suoh an admirable Master and excellent Office Bearers . Bro . Villiers , in hia reply ,

mentioned that the history of " The old Lodge of Dumfries , " now known as Dumfries Kilwinning , goes back to 1687 . Sir Charles Dalrymple and Lord Saltoun also addressed a few words to the gathering . Sir Ctiarles expressed regrt-fc that be was unable to remain fco the bauquet , otherwise he might have revived to some extent the glories of the Fergussons of Craigdarroch . He was himself descended from the Fergussons , but his forbear had been

referred to by the same poet as "The chaste Kilkerran . " Tha Grand Master o , nd other members of the depatation were entertained to a banquet in the evening in the Assembly Rooms , when 150 sat down . The nsnal Loyal and Masonic toasts were duly honoured . The Prince of Wales was designated in the toast list hy his Scottish titlf , Dnke of Rothesay , and the Chairman remarked that he was glad to observe this , because it showed that we did not concede all

The books of the Lodge having been examined , Lord Haddington congratulated the Provincial Grand Master and his brother Officers on the excellent working of the Lodge , and on tbe healthy and prosperous condition of Masonry in the Province . He recalled briefly the history of the Provincial Grand Lodge , whioh was ereoted in 1736 under the name

of the Southern Province , and had as ita first Master Bro . Crosbie , Advocate , son of a Provost of Dumfries , aud tbe prototype of Sir Walter Scott ' s " Pleydell . " He dwelt on the connection with the Province of the next Grand Master , Bro . Fergusaon , of Craigdarroch , also an ornament of the legal profession , the contemporary and friend of Burns , and victor in the historical drinking contest at Friars '

Carse , celebrated in the poem of "The Whistle . They had also connected with this district a Masonio souvenir of Burns in fche roll of the defunct Lodge of St . Andrew ' s , which was signed by the poet in 1788 . He congratulated tbe Province on its rich historical association ? , and on its good fortune in possessing suoh an admirable Master and excellent Office Bearers . Bro . Villiers , in hia reply ,

mentioned that the history of " The old Lodge of Dumfries , " now known as Dumfries Kilwinning , goes back to 1687 . Sir Charles Dalrymple and Lord Saltoun also addressed a few words to the gathering . Sir Ctiarles expressed regrt-fc that be was unable to remain fco the bauquet , otherwise he might have revived to some extent the glories of the Fergussons of Craigdarroch . He was himself descended from the Fergussons , but his forbear had been

referred to by the same poet as "The chaste Kilkerran . " Tha Grand Master o , nd other members of the depatation were entertained to a banquet in the evening in the Assembly Rooms , when 150 sat down . The nsnal Loyal and Masonic toasts were duly honoured . The Prince of Wales was designated in the toast list hy his Scottish titlf , Dnke of Rothesay , and the Chairman remarked that he was glad to observe this , because it showed that we did not concede all
