Earl Of Zetland Chapter.

associated with fche Earl of Zetland Lodge , and of advancing the best interests of the Masonic Order . The Eev . J . S . Brownrigg delivered fche oration , in which he said thafc the ancient Brethren always did their work well ; there was no hurry in it , they considering that whatever they undertook , if it was worth undertaking at all , was worth doing completely . In Masonry the same spirit should prevail , and

every Lodge should have attached to ifc a Eoyal Arch Chapter , as the Eoyal Arch was the completion of the Lodge degrees . He was afraid thafc was nob a universal feeling , and bhat Brebhren did not pay the same attention to the working of the Arch Degree as they did to that of the Craft . He was glad to see that the Earl of Zetland Lodge Brethren considered their work incomplete without a Chapter , and had now determined to remedy the defect .

The ceremony of consecration was then proceeded with , says the " Cifcy Press , " and at its conclusion Comp . A . F . Lay M . E . Z . 2501 Scribe N . 22 was installed as M . E . Z ., Comp . H . B . Chamberlain J . 22 as H ., and S . J . Cross P . Z . 1237 as J . Comp . E . J . Anning , CO ., F . S . S ., P . Z . 174 and 1598 was appointed to act as the P . Z ., and was also elected and invested as Treasurer ;

Comp . J . E . Carter D . C . 201 2 nd A . S . 2374 Scribe E . 2501 as Scribe E ., E . S . Ellis Scribe N ., H . G . Coard P . Scribe N . 1237 was appointed and invested as P . S ., J . F . Saunders H . 1507 and 2501 Scribe E . 201 1 st A . S .,- W . Carter P . S . 1237 2 nd A . S ., E . H . Goddard P . Z . 1623 D . C , E . Chatterton Scribe N . 1598 Org ., J . P . Taverner and T . H . Parry Stewards , and Turbefield Janitor .

Votes of thanks were afterwards passed to the Consecrating Officers , who were also elected honorary members of the Chapter . After the appointment of the committee for framing the bye-laws , and propositions had been given for joining members and exaltees , the Chapter was closed , and the Companions adjourned to a banquet . They subsequently honoured the usual Arch toasts .

Comp . T . Fenn responded to the toast of the Grand Officers , and Comp . Lay the First Principal , in proposing the Consecrating Officers , referred to the beautiful rendering of the consecration ceremony by Comp . Letchworth , saying he had never seen it

excelled during the whole course of his long Masonic career . It had been a rich Masonic treat , and the Grand Scribe E . had that night excelled himself . The oration of the Eev . J . S . Brownrigg was admirable , and the working of the other Consecrating Officers left nothing to be desired .

Comp . Letchworth acknowledged the compliment , and said that amidst all the numerous official duties the Grand Officers had to perform , none was more agreeable or congenial than the consecration of a new Lodge or a new Chapter . He congratulated the Earl of Zetland Chapter on having so genial and kind a Companion as Comp . Lay to preside over its destinies for the first year of its existence .

Comp . E . J . Anning , CO ., I . P . Z ., proposed the health of the M . E Z ., remarking thafc he had known Comp . Lay for twentyfive years , and expressing the hope thafc the Chapter would bave a flourishing existence . Comp . Lay , in reply , thanked Comp . Letchworth and Comp . Anning for their remarks , and the Companions of fche Chapter

for placing him in the proud position of first M . E . Z . The Chapter , he pointed out , originated from a conversation he had with the Second Principal when they were returning from a meeting of the Earl of Zetland Lodge , and , to their surprise , when they approached the authorities at the Freemasons' Hall with fear and trembling that they would have a rebuke , they

found thafc their fears were groundless , for their ideas were also thafc every Lodge should have a Chapter . The result had been shown that evening , as eighteen candidates were proposed for exaltation . They were all men of good social standing , who had come in without being asked , and would be a credit to E . A . Masonry and to the Earl of Zetland Chapter .

The toasts of H . and J ., and fche Visitors , were followed by the toast of the Officers , and fche Janitor ' s Toast closed the proceedings , which had been enlivened by some capital singing .

Ifc is a subject of natural pride to English Masons that they should have as their head the Heir-Apparent fco the Throne , and so long as his Eoyal Highness retains his position as fche first subject in the realm there is no doubt he will continue to hold the office of Graud Master , which the Masonic Order would nofc

willingly see him relinquish . When , in course of time , the Prince ascends the Throne , a successor will have to be found ; but even then the Eoyal Family will not be incapable of providing a candidate , should the Masons decide to follow the precedent so fortunately established in the case of the Prince of Wales . — "Chester City News .
