THB ADMISSION OF FOEEIGN . BEBTHEE N . INTO ENGLISH ^ LODGES .

To the Editor of ihe FREEMASON ' CHBONICLE . DEAR SIB AND BROTHER , —I read in - your issue of 30 th January the somewhat : bald announcement that a member of the Lodge La Perseverante AmitieV of Paris , was' admitted as a Joining Member of the Barnato Lodge , No . 2265 , and cannot help wishing , for the information and future guidance of the Brethren generally , that more particulars had been forthcoming . The Book of Constitutions gives no . rule , so far as I can see , upon this very

important point , but it would be interesting to know whether the ordinary course of procedure , as laid down in clause 189 , was followed in this case . Was the Brother ' s Certificate from the Grand Orient of France , and clearance Certificate from his former Lodge produced ? This leads to my second inquiry . I remember some time ago hearing'that French Freemasons would not be recognised in this country , in consequence of the Grand Orient of France

obliterating all reference to the Deity from their ritual . I am not sure that this " statement is correct , but' should it be so , would not the Brother have to be obligated according to . the English rite before being accepted as a member , 01 pi . English Lodge ? > Your . answer to these gueries would greatly oblige , - ' -- * Yours fraternally , , . . , . -M ASTBR MASON . -London , 10 th February " l 897 .

WHOLESALE INITIATIONS .

To the Editor of the FREEMASON ' S CHRONICM . DEAR SIR AND BROTHER , —In the report of the Dramatic Lodge , No . 1609 , recently held at Liverpool , it was stated that " three comedians , one publisher , one music hall artist , one theatrical manager , and one electrician connected with the stage were admitted to the Order . " , This , . according to Bro . Cocker , ' makes a total of seven persons initiated on the same day , or

two , more than the number allowed by the regulations . We are wondering whether the Provincial Grand Master issued a dispensation in this case ( it is not so stated in the report ) , and if not whether Bro . Finoberg's attention has been directed to the penalties of Rule , 207 . . ¦ i ¦ •¦ •* •- ¦ - - We are , - ¦ . ' - ¦ * ¦ - -r-W-- ••* Yours fraternally , VV - '¦ ' } j :. •» ,. ' . ' -. '' . Why should Lodges be held' at Hotels or other licensed premises , unless it be for purposes of the

fourth degree ? I have no sympathy with the Brethren who may suffer from such a visitation , the remedy for which is to have a suitable Lodge room or Temple of their own . Yours fraternally , ' C . O A .

Grand Lodge Of Scotland.

GRAND LODGE OF SCOTLAND .

THE Quarterly Communication was held in Freemasons' Hall , Edinburgh , on the 4 th inst ., and was attended by about 500 Brethren , ' under the presidency of Lord Saltoun Grand Master . The annual accounts for the year ending 20 th November , with the Auditor ' s report thereon , were submitted , and showed

that the income for the . year had been £ 5 , 112 , and the expenditure £ 2 , 623 , giving a surplus of £ 2 , 489 , one-half whereof falls to be transferred to the annuity fund . The funds and estate of Grand Lodge . were reported at £ 37 , 374 . The income of the fund of Scottish Masonic Benevolence had been £ 798 , and the expenditure

£ 738 , making the fund now £ 7 , 315 . The income of the annuity fund had been £ 1 , 262 , and annuities io the amount of £ 995 had been paid , and the fund now stands at £ 24 , 002 . The Grand Treasurer reported that the income of "Grand Lodge for the

quarter ending 23 rd January had been £ 2 , 289 , and the expenditure £ 1 , 452 , and that there had been 1 , 970 entrants to the Order . The Annuity Board reported the death of six annuitants , and that there are ninety-eight on the roll , receiving annuities amounting to £ 1 , 005 . . Grand Lodge unanimously resolved to give a sum of £ 100 . to , the Edinburgh subscription for the Indian Famine Fund . Lord Eosslyn S . G . W . mentioned that when he was at Lodge Dramatic and Arts on the previous Monday , Brother John Henry Cooke had offered the drawings of a night at his Circus

towards the fund ; and his Lordship suggested that Brother Cooke should be thanked for his kind . offer . He-also suggested that the Provincial Grand Lodge should originate contributions to the fund . , These suggestions were at once adopted ' , arid on the motion of the Grand Master Bro . Cooke was thanked for his

kindness in the matter . The Grand Committee submitted reports of Provincial Grand Masters in regard to Lodges which had been temporarily suspended for breach of the new rule as to the period that jnust elapse between the " conferring of degrees . It seemed that in eight of-the : Provincial Grand Lodges . office bearers of the

suspended Lodges had explained the circumstances and apologised , and that the suspensions had been re-called , A . long discussion took place as to the position of Lodge Mother Kilwinning , in Aryshire , and a motion was made that the records as to its suspension ( removed some time ago ) should be deleted , but was lost by 251 against 92 .

. . FREEMASONS IN POWER . THE Government of the State of Equador ~( says " La Croix " ) has fallen into the hands of the Freemasons .
