The Church And The Craft.

THE CHURCH AND THE CRAFT .

LAST year the first of what will probably become an annual service for the special edification of the Freemasons of Huddersfield and district was held at the Kirkburton Parish Church . Then the London and North Western Eaihvay Company put on a Sunday train for the first time in the history of the Kirkourton branch line . A similar service was arranged to

be held on Sunday , and the railway company again provided special facilities for the conveyance of the members of the town Lodges and their friends to Kirkburton . With the additional incentive of a very fine afternoon , a considerable number went into the country .

About one hundred and twenty Brethren joined in the procession from the Masonic Hall , Kirkburton ( where the register was signed ) , to church , a feature being the presence of Bro . Grimshaw , who belongs to one of the Indian Lodges , and whose Masonic clothing was plentifully decorated with gold , in accordance with tbe custom in vogue in that part of the world .

The opening hymn was " O Lord , how joyful ' tis to see ;" the first lesson—If . Chronicles ii . —was read by Bro . W . H . Jessop P . M . P . P . G . D ., Mayor of Huddersfield ; the Psalm for the day was chanted to music by Dr . Norris ; the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis were sung to suitable chants ; the second lesson

—Acts vii . to verse 20—was read by Bro . A . H . J . Fletcher P . M . P . P . G . E . ; aud the anthem was " O praise God in His Holiness " ( Dr , Clarke-Whitfield ) , in which the solos were taken by Miss Edith Midgley and Bro . W . Biley P . M . The hymn , " All hail the power of Jesu's name , " was sung before the sermon , which

was preached by Bro . the Bev . T . M . Turnbull , B . A ., P . M . P . P . G . C . Assistant Chaplain to the Lodge , vicar of Newmill , who based an appropriate discourse on the building of Solomon ' s

temple . During the singing of the hymn , " Before Jehovah s awful throne , " an offertory was taken on behalf of the Church day schools , which realised between £ 10 and £ 11 . After the Benediction the service closed with the National Anthem .
