Coleman 127 , F . J . Doughty , J . Avens , J . Wynman , & c . ; the company altogether numbering upwards of sixty . The minutes were read and confirmed . The Lodge was advanced to the second degree , and the W . M .-elect was presented
by the Director of Ceremonies . He signified assent to the usual regulations , Bros . Anderson , Gaskin and Bugden were appointed as assistant Installing Officers , the Lodge was opened in the third degree , and the work proceeded in regular form , the new Master being installed and subsequently saluted in the three degrees .
Bro . J . L . Hume P . M . Secretary delivered the addresses in grand style , the W . M . having previously appointed and invested his Officers for the year . We congratulate the new W . M . on the way in which he carried out this portion of his duties , indeed the whole of the ceremonies of the day were gone through in a pleasing and satisfactory manner .
Other business having been disposed of , the Brethren repaired to the White Hart Hotel , where an excellent banquet was served in a manner that reflected great credit on the popular host and his well known establishment . At the conclusion of the dinner the AV . M . gave the toast of the King and the Craft , which was honoured , Miss Ethel Williams singing the solo of the National Anthem .
The next toast was that of the Grand Master ,, the W . M . remarking how strange it seemed to propose it without coupling with it the name of the Prince of Wales , who had so long been associated with them as head of the Order . However , they felt they could confidently leave the conduct of Freemasonry in the hands of that distinguished Mason ' s successor , as the Duke of Connaught had already shown he could carry out the work of Freemasonry in a creditable manner .
The next toast was that of Earl Amherst Pro Grand Master , and the rest of the Grand Officers present and past . The W . M . remarked there were no Grand Officers present among them that night , but they had the pleasure of seeing Bro . Elvin , who was to
be invested with a Grand Lodge collar on the occasion of the installation of the Grand Master . He sincerely congratulated that Brother on the honour to be paid- him . He was well known in the Province of Kent , and appreciated by all who knew him . The toast was honoured .
Bros . Henning and Didson responded on behalf of the Prov . Grand Officers . Bro . J . Brighurst now took charge of the gavel , and submitted the toast of the Worshipful Master . All-who had the pleasure of knowing Bro . Hughes knew he had always carried out his duties to the satisfaction of the Lodge . He had worked his way up in a way which was a credit to them and to himself , and whether it
was in his private capacity , in municipal life , or as Master of the Lodge , he might be relied on to discharge his duties with efficiency . He alluded to the great kindness of Bro . Stanley S . W ., who had stood aside so that Bro . Hughes might be elected and installed Master of the Lodge during his term of office as Mayor of Margate , and concluded by wishing their new W . M . a happy and prosperous term of Office . The toast was heartily received , as also was the W . M . on his rising to respond .
Bro . Hughes first sincerely thanked the proposer of the toast for his flattering remarks , and the Brethren for so cordially endorsing what had been said . He expressed his appreciation of the kindness of Bro . Stanley , who had so readily given way to the wishes of the Lodge . His dual position was not self sought , but
was the outcome of a general desire on the part of the members . He fully recognised the responsibilities of the duties which devolved upon him , and promised to do his very best to justify the confidence reposed in him bv his Brother Masons . He concluded by again thanking them for their kind reception .
Bros . Elvin , Bamber and others responded to the toast of the Visitors . Bro . Hill proposed the toast of the Masonic Charities , and said that in the Province of Kent they found as much charitable effort as in any part of England . The Brethren of Kent had raised the largest sum ever contributed to an ordinary Festival of the Masonic Institutions and were , he was sure , as ready to do as much
good work in the future in this direction as they had ever done in the past . Other remarks were also made by Bro . Stanley on this subject , he specially referring to the considerable sum raised by Margate Brethren in support of the Provincial Grand Master ' s chairmanship on behalf of the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls . The Installing Master , the Past Masters and the Officers were severally toasted , the list concluding with the Tvler ' s toast .
During the evening an excellent entertainment was provided , in which Misses Ethel and Alice Williams took part , rendering some excellent songs . Bro . J . Hosking also favoured the company .
