After tho Lodgo was duly opened and tho preliminaries disposed of . Bros . A . Posener
and J . Posenor were raised to the degree of Master Masons . In duo course the ballot wa 3 taken for Messrs . Henry Valentino and P . Cohon , wbich resulted in their favour . The former gentleman being present was at once initiated into tho first degree of the Order . Both ceremonies wore excellently performed by tho W . M . and his officers , tho Past Masters being most assiduous
in rendering all possible assistance . After tho LoJgo was closed , tho company adjourned to tho Holborn , whore an exceedingly well-served banquet awaited them , nnder the superintendence of Bro . Hatnp . After grace , the customary toasts were proceeded with . Tho " loyal " were most enthusiastically received . Bro . Finder , in submitting tho name of the W . M ., remarked upon his abilities both in
the Lodge and at tho banqnet table . In reply , Bro . Wbartnan thanked the brethren for their kindness , and assured them of his gratification in thinking that ho had so far succeeded in giving satisfaction to tho Lodgo . Ho would now at once propose tho toast of the evening , which was , as they were well aware , that of tho Iuitiate . He liked to see a moderate influx of new brethren , for with a sufficiency of
members aud consequent means , the Lodge cannot fail to prosper . From the way in which Bro . Valentine conducted himself that evening , it may be concluded he would bo a credit to the Lodgo . Tho initiate said , in response , that he had never been in such a position before , therefore , tho brethren wonld not expect that he had much to say , except to thank them for tho way in which he had been received .
If God spares his life he wonld leave no stone unturned to endeavour to become a shining light of the Order . For the visitors , Bro . Gottheil said he had on former occasions , when enjoying the pleasure and hospitality of the Kent Lodge , remarked npon the fitness of Bro . Wharinan to occupy the chair . As has been observed by Bro . Finder , he presides with tact and discretion . He would first express hia
thanks lor their kind reception , and must especially mention the name of Bro . Barlow , the Steward of the Lodge , who had been most solicitous for the comfort and pleasure of the visitors . In no other Lodge , and at none of the many Masonio gatherings at which he visited from time to time , had he found such an excellent and indefatigable Steward . The working in the Lodge , taken
as a whole , was excellent , the W . M . and officers , but more especially the former , performing their duties in a manner vp . proaching as nearly as possible to the average . But if Bro . Wharman ' s working should be deemed capable of adverse criticism , they may be sure he excelled in his character as a true and faithful Mason , and that no ono can justly tako exception in respect to his
worthiness as a friend and citizen . He was therefore sure they never regretted placing him ab the head of the Lodge . Bro . Rndderforth concurred in what had been stated by the former speaker , and added , Bro . Gottheil observed that he had taken great interest in stimulating the progress of tho W . M ., he ( Bro . Rudderforth ) had also done hia best to forward him in the Lodge of Instruction with which he was
connected , and was glad to find him occupying the office of Master so creditably . The other visitors responded in a similar spirit . The Past Masters replied each in their turn . Bro . May pointed to the harmony and unity which existed in the Lodge . Bro . Martin promised to give his best assistence whenever opportunity should serve . Bro . Barlow expressed his satisfaction at the flattering terms which
some of the visitors were good enough to apply to him , Ho was always pleased to do his best to make every one happy and comfortable , by administering to their wants . Indeed , ono or two brethren complained that they had received rather too much of tho good things . He would suggest , as there wero two medical men present , members of tho Lodge , they would , he was sure , if asked , do something to procure relief of any inconvenience , and he was sure
they would do it gratis on this occasion . Bro . Sleeman Treas . said whenever the W . M . demanded a banquet , a banquet they should have , as there were plenty of means to do it witb . Bro . Duke Hon . Sec . hoped to be able to render good service to the Lodge for many years to come . The remaining officers severally replied , and the proceedings ended . Bros . Lipschitz , Rudderforth , Valentine and others contributed largely to the harmony of the evening by singing some excellent songs .
