office in Grand Lodge wifch them is an honourable ambition , and the discharge of its obligations a pleasurable duty , the cost of which is cheerfully borne . Their experience tallies with our own—that there is nothing like voluntary work to keep tbe Craft healthy , vigorous , and
truly benevolent . Bi * o . Moore was strongly in favour of something like our system of Provincial Grand Lodge being introduced into America . While he offered the suggestion with the modesty that usually accompanies strength of character and conviction , be cast off all reserve
m denouncing the paying system as being hostile to the spirit of Freemasonry , expensive , and unnecessary . We trust that Bro . Moore ' s dying words will have their effect
upon our American brethren , and that they will nofc permit the continuance of thafc jealousy of the mother country which has so frequently intervened to prevent the adoption of old practices which time has proved to be of great price .

Bro . Graham ' s Eighteenth Annual Conceit , at Sfc . Andrew ' s Hall , Balham , lasfc week , was a great success . Bro . Egbert Roberts , Miss Amy Graham , and Madame Lansdell Sims were enthusiastically applauded . The demand for encores in several instances were gracefully conceded by these popular artistes .

DEAK SIK AND BitoTHEK , —I shonld be glad if yon could find space for tho following particulars in reference to the portraits destroyed by the late fire , and of which , I regret to say , wo havo neither copies nor engravings . Amongst yonr readers there may be some who are
more fortunate ; or , afc any rate , may be able to enlighten ns as to whether any of them were either engraved or copied . In 1785 a proposal was made for engraving the two first-named portraits , but I am inclined to think ifc was not done at that time , if at all . Yours fraternally , H . SADLER , P . M .

Justice Lodge , No . 147- —A meeting was held on Wednes . day , 10 th October , at tho White Swan Hotel , Deptford : —Present Bros . J . W . Freeman W . M ., Banks S . W ., H . C . Freeman J . W . , Bartlett Treasurer , Speight P . M . Sec , Pitt S . D ., Beckett J . D ., Dilley I . G ., Goddard Tyler . Past ; Masters Bros . Bolton , C . G . Dilley , Waterman , Hntchinjrs , Ingram , and Patte . Visitor—Bro . Bull .
winkle J . W . 1421 . Business—This waa tho first meeting after tho vacation , and there was a numerous attendance of fche brethren . The minutes of the last meeting having been read and confirmed , Bros . Lewis and Parkinson , candidates for passing , answered tYio usual questions satisfactorily , and after the Lodge was opened in the second degree , they were duly passed to the degree of F . C .
Some formal business waa then disposed of , and the brethren adjourned to an excellent banquet , whioh was most admirably served by the popular proprietor Bro . Morgan . The cloth being cleared , tho usual toasts followed , and some capital singing by Bros . Banks , W . E . Dilley , Astley and Williams served to pass a very pleasant evening .
Tranquillity Lodge , No . 185 . —The first meeting of thia Lodge after the usual recess was held on Monday at the Guildhall Tavern . The ordinary meetings are held on the 3 rd Monday , in the month , but ns next Monday evening ia a Jewish Festival ( Tabernacles ) , and as a large proportion of the brethren are Jews , an emer . gency meeting was convened for Monday lasfc . Bro . A . Staley W . M .
presided , and there was a very large attendance of brethren . Bros . Tuck and Rosenfelcl were raised , and Bros . Lebus , Myers , Emanuel , Reeves , Birn and Cohen were passed . Brother Abraham Cohen ( foimerly of this Lodge ) ancl Brother Benjamine Ramus ( late of the Commercial Lods ? o , Glasgow ) were elected joining members . Bro . Philip Levy tendered his resignation as Secretary of fche Lodge , after a service of nearly a quarter of a century . The resignation
was accepted , with much regret , and a resolution passed acknowledging the valuable services rendered to the Lodge by Brother Levy . Bro . Asher I . Myers was elected Secretary pro tem . The brethren adjourned to banquet , at which tho W . M . presided . The nsual Loyal and Masonio toasts were proposed and responded to . Bros . Harfeld P . M . and Moses ( Montefiore Lodge ) acknowledged fche toasfc of the visitors . Bros . Ross , Barnett and other brethren contributed to the harmony of the evening .

Other matters connected with the interests of tho Lodge wero disposed of , after which Lodge was closed in ancient form , and the brethren retired to refreshment . During the subsequent speeches , reference was made to fche capital working of the Master and his Officers , and to the amounts contributed to the Masonic Charities from this young Lodge .
Selwyn Lodge of Instruction , No . 1901 . —A meeting of the above Lodge was held at the East Dulwich Hotel , East Dulwich , on Friday , the 28 th ult ., when a large number of brethren were present . The chair was taken by Bro . Conley P . M . 1559 , who appointed the following Officers : —Bros . Taffs W . M . 186 as S . W ., Johnson S . W . 1320 J . W ., Burnett S . W . 1901 S . D ., Shorter J . D .,
Rotheroe 30 I . G ., Bowler Tyler . The Lodge having been opened in due form , the ceremony of installation was rehearsed , and Bro . Bellis W . M . 1901 was installed into the chair . The following brethren were then elected members of tho Lodge : —Bros . Benedetti 1155 , Davis 310 , Arklington 217 , Parkhouse 1475 , Beck 1901 , Kedge 749 , Brinton 1329 , Williams 90 , Shannaw 975 , Williams 72 , and Lean 1564 . The

James ' s Great Hnll . " Wc may say of Mr . Duval that he never descends to vulgarity ,
bnt . 'ustains the several characters he impersonates with considerable versatility and gentlemanly bearing . Ilia chnnsea of costume are carried out with marvellous rapidity , and he keeps the interest of his audience well sustained during the whole time he occup ies tbe stage .
The Fifteen Sections will be worked in the Percy Lodge of Instruction . No . 108 , on Saturday , the 27 rh instant , when the chair will he taken b y our esteemed Brother Fenner . Brethren who can make it convenient to attend , will be ampl y rewarded .
