IN our endeavour to ascertain just how physically perfect the novitiate should be , we are apt to forget that he must know something . A man may be a splendid specimen of physical manhood , a pleasant ana companionable associate and yet be entirely incapable of comprehending the beauties

of Masonry . Masonry is a study , a science . It requires an intelligent being to realise its depth of meaning and its full import . Without such a realisation there can be no adequate comprehension of Masonic duties and no proper conception of Masonic ideals . Masons who lack the necessary intelligence

live on from day to day endeavouring to follow the ideals in their mind but knowing nothing of the teachings of Masonry . They are entertained but not instructed in the Lodge-room . They may strive in an upward direction but they have no fixed goal . Masonry means little or nothing to them . They

are following a blind path which leads them nowhere . They never can be true Masons since they do not comprehend the principles of the Order . We need men with minds . Masonry

cannot inculcate a knowledge of its deeper meanmg in a brain incapable of receiving it . it is a useless task which has been attempted much too often for the good of the Fraternity . — " Tyler . "

To celebrate the opening of the Masonic Hall at Southend , the members of the Masonic Club gave a ball on Friday evening of last week , which proved highly successful . Among those present were Bro . F . F . Ramuz , the Mayor , who was

BY the many who knew and esteemed him , the death of Captain James Glazebrook , which occurred at his residence , West Hoathly House , York Road , Eastbourne , on Saturday evening , will be very sincerely regretted . There were few men better known in Eastbourne . Captain Glazebrook , who was in his seventy-fourth year , was born at

Shoreham , and at about the age of thirteen he definitely adopted a seafaring career . Having at the age of twentythree obtained his certificate as Master ,. he became engaged in the Australian and American trade , and it was at this period he had a most perilous experience with the bri g "Sea

W . of the Azores , a hurricane carried away the vessel ' s foremast , bowsprit , cutwater , figure head , cook ' s galley , iron caboose , and cooking apparatus , and three days later another storm cleared the

remainder of her bulwarks , started her stern frame , and carried away the companion . The mainmast and the cabin skylight were all that were left standing . During the gale one of the crew was twice washed overboard , but was
