Charles Skipp waa raised to tho sublime degree ; Bro . Thring was passed ; and , after Mr . Cropper had been successfully balloted for , that gentleman was regularly introduced aud initiated into Freemasonry . The W . M . performed tho

heavy work of the evening most efficiently , and received the thanks and congratulations of the members and visitors . The name of a gentleman as a candidate for initiation was handed in—tho ballot to be takeri afc tho next meeting—and then tho Lodge was closed . The brethren afterwards partook of light refreshments , supplemented by a " grog and cigar , " and amused thomselves with social chat , interspersed with some capital songs .

Braithwaite having proved satisfactory , thoy wore with duo solemnity raised to the degree of Master Mason . Lodge was resumed , and the ballot taken on proposition for Messrs . W . Pain , A . Gilbey , and S . Beaumont . This resulted favoarably , and Messrs . Pain and

Gilbey , being in attendance , were admitted into the mysteries of the Order . Bro . Hood P . M . assisted in the Deacon ' s duties . The important elections of the year wero then proceeded with , Bro . J . S . Taylor S . W . being nuauimously elected W . M . for the ensuing twelve mouths ; Bro . J . G . Stevens P . M . was re-elocted Treasurer , and Bro . Speight P . M . Tyler . Bros . Etheridge , Peacock , aud Gulley

were also elected to fulfil the importaut duties of Auditors of Lodgo Funds . After discussion of business of interest to tho members , Lodge was closed in clue form , and the brethren adjourned to ihe bauquetting hull , where Bro . A . Walter had prepared a iepaat worthy of the occasion , to which due attention wad paid . Upon the removal of the cloth , Bro . Thome having promised that ho would not indulge

iu long speeches , gave in appropriate terms the us rial Loyal and Masonic toasts . Bio . P . M . Wynne next proposed tho health of the W . M ., with whom all were so well acquainted ; he would not , as time was on the wing , detain them with a long speech iu honour of the toast . Bro . Stevens here gavo with eil ' ect Tom Hood ' s humourous poem , "Tim Turpin . " Bro . Thorn , in reply to the cordial reception

of the toast , said it was probably the lust time he should havo the honour of replying , in his present capacity , for the hearty maimer iu which his name had then , and on all occasions been received . He had promised to be brief in his remarks , but he felt he could nut sufficiently express his appreciation of the warmth of the reception oi his name as W . M . Whilst upon his legs , he would propose the

toast ot the initiates . Upon no occasion had he been more pleased than on the present to welcome so largo a number of brethren , who had honoured them with their presence . Bro . W . Sparks gavo a capital rendering of W . V . Wallace ' s " When other lips and other hearts , " which was greatly enjoyed , and tho Visitors soverally responded—all

giving high praiso to the larborough Lodge for its working and its thorough hospitality . Tho other toasts honourod wero tho Past Masters , the W . M . elect , and the Officers of the Lodge , to whom the W . M . paid a high tribute of praise for the manner iu which they had supported him during hia period of office . To this toast thanks wero returned in suitable terms by tho Officers present , and the Tyler ' s toast brought ; a most ; enjoyable evening to a close . Among

tho many items contributing to this happy result must be mentioned the really effective services of Bro . G . T . H . Seddon , Organist , who , both in the Lodge aud during the post prandial proceedings , furnished a considerable quota to the fund of enjoyment . The songs of Bro . Sparks , Bro . Thorn ( "Tho Wolf" ) , and Bro . Stephous ( " She wore a wreath of roses" ) being accompanied iu tho best taste .

Humphrey Chetham Lodge No . 645 . —Tho regular meeting waa held on 3 rd December , and was well attended . The S . W . ( Bro . A . Middletou ) was unanimously elected to the chair of W . M ., and two brethren were passed to the second degroo . Some time ago tho brothron voted a silver collar and badge to bo worn by the Master iu celebration of the Lodgo attaining its twenty-fifth

anniversary , tho warrant being dated February 185 o . Tho collar consists of , alternately , the monogram " H . C . " and a plain panel with oval clasp , on which are engraved the names of tho several W . M . ' s since the formation . Tho badge consists of the square , from which hangs an oval pendant with the arms and crest of Humphrey Chetham

enamelled in the heraldic colours . Tho chain will bo presented on tho day of Installation in February 1 SS 0 , and , should any of tho Manchester brethren desire to see it , will bo on viow at the establish , ment of tho designer , Bro . Joseph Crowthcr , 3 S King-street , Manchester .

' , Hirio "' S . ' D ., Fenner Preceptor ; also Bros . Klein , Pearcy , and other brethren . The usual formalities were dnly observed . Bro . Klein answered tho

questions leading to the second degree , aud the ceremony of passing was rehearsed , Bro . Klein acting a 3 candidate . Bro . Fenner worked the fourth section of the first lecture , assisted by the brethren . The auditor ' s report was adopted . Bro . Serjeant was appointed to preside at the next meeting .

Burdett Coutts Lodge of Instruction , No . 1278 . —A meeting was held on Wednesday , 3 rd December , at the Salmon and Ball , Bethnal-green-road . Present—Bros . R . L . Stnrtevanb W . M ., Clarke S . W ., Hadlcy Prestage J . W ., R . J . Chitson Sec , Wooding J . D ., Smith I . G ., W . Hogg Preceptor . Visitor—Bro . Christian . Business—Lodge was opened in due form , and the minutes were read and con . firmed . The ceremony of initiation was rehearsed by the W . M ., Bro .

Ohri 3 tian acting as candidate . Tho first , second and third sections of the lecture were worked by Bro . Christian , assisted by the brethren . Bro . Clarke will preside at the ensuing Wednesday ' s meeting . In consequence of pressing business engagements , Bro . Chitsou resiguccl the post of Hon . Sec , and Bro . Hadley Prestage was selected to fill the position pro turn . The election will take place in April next . Nothing further being offered , tho Lodge was closed iu duo form .

Humphrey Chetham Lodge No . 645 . —Tho regular meeting waa held on 3 rd December , and was well attended . The S . W . ( Bro . A . Middletou ) was unanimously elected to the chair of W . M ., and two brethren were passed to the second degroo . Some time ago tho brothron voted a silver collar and badge to bo worn by the Master iu celebration of the Lodgo attaining its twenty-fifth

anniversary , tho warrant being dated February 185 o . Tho collar consists of , alternately , the monogram " H . C . " and a plain panel with oval clasp , on which are engraved the names of tho several W . M . ' s since the formation . Tho badge consists of the square , from which hangs an oval pendant with the arms and crest of Humphrey Chetham

enamelled in the heraldic colours . Tho chain will bo presented on tho day of Installation in February 1 SS 0 , and , should any of tho Manchester brethren desire to see it , will bo on viow at the establish , ment of tho designer , Bro . Joseph Crowthcr , 3 S King-street , Manchester .
