In the daily journals , about a fortnight , ago appeared an account of a most important meeting held at Eome , at whioh the Pope was present , with a large number of influential Roman Catholic personages , and His Holiness on that occasion denounced the Italian Freemasons , and expressed himself to the effect that the peace of Europe would iu his

judgment be disturbed by that body . Bro . George Rideal P . M . 1798 , a prominent solicitor , and a very ardent Freemason , having read in one of fche Manchester evening papers an account of the good which had been wrought by English Masons , and the magnificent support whioh they had rendered in aid of Charities during the past year , cut out the paragraph , and forwarded the same to His Holiness , with _ a letter , as follows : — .

12 Brazennose Street , Manchester , 3 rd January 1893 . May it please your Holiness . In contradistinction to the Freemasons of Italy , whom your Holiness recently denounced , I beg to onclo . se herewith a paragraph from to-day ' s Manchester Evening Mail , showing that during the last year no less a sum than £ 99 , 465 3 s 5 d has been contributed by English Freemasons in aid of charity , and I may add that our future

Kiug ( H . E . H . fche Prince of Wales ) , being the head of the Order of Freemasons in England , there is no fear of tho peace of any nation being disturbed owing to Freemasonry here . Wishing your Holiness every joy and happiness in the new year , I remain , Your obedient servant , GEORGE RIDEAI .
