SEQUEL TO THE ATTACK ON THE M . W . GRAND MASTER .

HpHERE were few Englishmen who heard of the * recent attempt on the life of H . R . H . the Prince of Wales but experienced a shock of intense disgust for the miscreant who made the assault , and few but uttered a quiet prayer of thankfulness that the attempt had no more serious results than a shock to the nerves

of His Royal Highness , the Princess , and those who were with them at the time ; and we venture to think there was no body of men more truly thankful that the attempt had failed than were the Freemasons of

England , over whom the Prince of Wales has so long ruled , and among whom he is so universally respected —but disgust at the outrage , and satisfaction at its failure are not sufficient , in the mind of some of us ;

there is the tangible expression of thankfulness wanting , and we are very pleased indeed to find that the initiative in this direction has been taken by a Brother who has already won high renown for himself by many

liberal donations—our Bro . J . H . Whadcoat P . M . 19 P . Prov . S . G . W . Dorset ; while another world-renowned Mason , Bro . Richard Eve P . G . Treasurer of England has shown how easy is the task of infection in well doing .

It was at the regular meeting of the recently established Richard Eve Lodge " , No . 2772 , on Friday of last week , at Freemasons' Hall , London , and of which Bro . J . M . McLeod Secretary of the Royal

Masonic Institution for Boys is the Junior Warden , that the announcement of Bro . Whadcoat ' s liberality was made , and the work of practical thankfulness at the escape of the Prince of Wales was regularly started

in our Lodges . Bro . McLeod then read the following letter from Bro . Whadcoat , who is one of the more recently admitted members of the Lodge : Poole , Dorset ,

5 th April 1900 . DEAR BRO . MCLEOD , —As a thank offering at the providential escape of the M . W . G . M . H . R . H . the Prince of Wales I beg to enclose a cheque for 200 guineas towards the Funds of your Institution , of which H . R . H . is President . I am , dear Bro . McLeod , Yours faithfully and fraternally , ( Signed ) J . H . WHADCOAT .

The announcement of this furthur generous gift by our esteemed Brother Whadcoat elicited much enthusiasm , which became intensified when Brother Richard Eve , the first Master of the Lodge , and the

Mason in whose honour it was established , announced his intention of supplementing the funds of the Charity with a like amount , and with equal feelings of gratitude

and thankfulness , to endow the chair of the Lodge in perpetuity as a Vice-Patron of the Institution . It is seldom we have had the pleasure of recording so early an imitation of a truly noble example , and we feel

convinced our Bro . Whadcoat will be the first to recognise that the imitation of his action by Bro . Eve is the " sincerest form of flattery . " There are many more who could follow the lead of our two worthy Brethren , is it too much to ask them to consider the advisability of doing so ?

THE newly established Richard Eve Lodge , which has played so prominent a part in this matter , is making rapid progress , and is likely to become a centre for Brethren from the far East . It will be remembered that among its Initiates were the Sultan Mohamad Khan , Mir Munshi of the Ameer of Afghanistan ; and the Prince Harnam Singh .

At the meeting on Friday , three gentlemen from India were initiated , they being resident in this country as Students of Law . Another of the Initiates of the Lodge is the worldrenowned Dr . Christian David Ginsburg—one of the revisers of the Old Testament , and a distinguished Oriental Scholar .

The meeting was presided over by Bro . Richard Eve P . G . Treasurer W . M ., supported by Bros . Harry Manfield P . G . S . W . Norths and Hunts Grand Treasurer-elect S . W ., J . M . McLeod P . G . Sword Bearer J . W ., A . J . Thomas Treas ., J . Percy Fitzgerald Sec , A . G . Duck S . D ., C . W .

West J . D ., W . Lawrence I . G ., E . P . Moore Organist , J . H . Gerards and R . Quayle Stewards , Major J . E . LeFeuvre P . G . D . P . D . P . G . M . Hants and Isle of Wight ( all Founders of the Lodge ) , George Everett P . G . Treas . Hon . Member , C . D . Ginsburg , LL . D ., J . P ., C . H . Gadsby , John Fell , J . P .,

Giovanni Antunovich , John W . Gieve , J . P ., Prov . G . Treas . Hants and Isle of Wight , W . J . Kershaw , G . J . Allen , J . P ., the Prince Harnam Singh ; and the following visitors : the

Mayor of Leamington Bro . J . Murray Molesworth , W . M . of the Shakespeare Lodge ; Bro . W . Bennett , W . M . of the Playgoers Lodge ; J . Stephens P . G . D . D . C ., with several others .

The work included the raising of Bros . Gadsby and Prince Harnam Singh ; and the initiation of Messrs . Rabdul Salam Khan . Sunder Dass Pasricha . and Meer Alan Khan .
