local Lodgo of that port , the Fowey No . 977 . Tho P . G . M . said ho fell ; sure of the sympathy aud great regret felfc by the brethren with him afc tho sad loss of thoir D . P . G . M ., Sir F . M . Williams , and ho suggested thafc a voto of condolence should bo convoyed to Lady AVilliams afc the sad event . A unanimous expression of tho heartfelt approval of the brethren of his Lordship ' s suggestion was exhibited .

The P . M . G . also stated thafc tho portrait of their lato P . G . M ., Mr . Augustus Smith , presented by them to Mr . Dorrien-Smith as a memorial of the respect iu which his nuclo had been held by the brethren of the Province , had reached that gentleman , and bo read two letters from Mr . Dorrion-Smith , acknowledging the kindness and expressing his gratification at the kind remembrance in which

tho memory of his uncle was hold by tho brethren . The P . G . Treasurer reported a balance in hand of £ 101 10 s Gd , about the same sum as was in hand at the close of the previous year . The Secretary ' s report stated tho number of Lodges in tho Province to bo twenty . eight . During the past year the number of initiations bad been 110 , joining members 33 , members from previous year 1497

total 1640 ; againsfc for 1871—nnmber of initiations 119 , joining members 47 , members 1-180 , total 1676 ; decrease during tho year 36 . During the past year the returns of the attendance of P . M . 's of tho various Lodges eligible for office had come in much better than herotofore , but three Lodges had omitted to fulfil thafc duty , tho performance of which was essential in order to allow the " merits of any

brethren of the Lodges to come before the P . G . M . Both reports wore received and adopted . The brethren then proceeded iu procession , with bauds playing , aud banners displayed , to Fowey Church to attend divine service . That noble edifice , a fine specimen of the decorated Gothic rebuilt in 1466 ,

and recently restored at an expense of £ 5 , 000 was crowded . AV . Bro . the Hon . and Rev . J . T . Boscawen preached from Johu xiii . 35 . The discourse was an eloquent dissertation on brotherly love . At tho close of the service there was a collection of £ 13 2 s 4 d . From the church tho brethren returned in procession to the institute , where bnsiness was resumed .

The report of tho Cornwall Masonic Annuity and Benevolent Fund shewed donations and subscriptions for 1879 £ 149 17 s , againsfc £ 164 4 a 6 d for 1878 , a decrease of £ 14 7 s 6 d , which principally arose from the decease of the late D . P . G . M ., Sir F . M . AVilliams , who was a liberal contributor . Balance iu hand , up to 31 sfc December 1878 , £ 165 10 s 9 d , receipts from interest on stock and bonds £ 58 lis 7 d

total £ 374 5 s 4 d , outlay £ 208 ls 3 d , balance in hand £ 166 4-s Id . During the past year there had been four annuitants , each receiving £ 20 a year , and two children in receipt of educational grants of £ 15 a year each . One of the latter now ceased to be paid , the time for which the paymeat was voted having expired . Petitions for relief had been received from a brother of the Phoenix Lodgo , Truro , and a

brother of the Cornubia Lodge , Hayle . Also a petition for nu educational grant to a child of Bro . Thomas Barrett deceased , formerly of St . Anue Lodge , Looe . The voting on each of those petitions took place that day . Since tho last annual meeting the capital account had increased £ 96 18 s Id . By tho lamented death of the R . AV . Bro . Sir F . M . AVilliams , Bart ., the number of Trustees was reduced to

three , ancl under rule 6 of the Lodge byo-laws it was necessary to appoint additional Trustees at that meeting . The report was received and adopted , and AV . Bro . Sir Charles Graves Sawle , Barfc ., was elected a trustee of tbe fund . < Tho annual report from Bro . AV . J . Hughan Past S . G . D . and P . P . G , Sec , respecting his management of the votes for the London Masonic

Charities on behalf of the Province , was read . Bro . Hughan was unable to attend . The failure in obtaining the election of the candidate from Fowey to the Girls' School , ifc stated , had arisen from the Boys ' votes nofc being exchangeable on the day of election , an unusual circumstance . Ifc was , however , hoped thafc tho Province would bo

successful in October . It recommended votes of twenty guineas each to the Girls' School , and Aged Freemasons' Institution . Bro . Hughan concluded by submitting the resignation of his office of managing the votes . After services of ten years , he said , be shonld esteem it a favour to be relieved .

The report was received and adopted . The resignation of Bro . Hughan was unanimously disapproved of , and tho matter was left with the P . G . M . to endeavour to reconcile thafc brother to a further service . The voting on the proposed grants resulted in a vote of £ 15 per annum for five years to the sou of Bro . Barrett , and £ 10 to a

brother of No . 331 . AV . Bro . Emra Holmes brought forward his proposition to appoint a committee to solicit subscriptions towards tho erection of tbo Proposed Truro Cathedral ; Devon to be invited to assist , aucl the money to be expended in somo feature of tho Cathedral to bo a lasting memorial of the Freemasons of Devon and Cornwall . He showed that similar steps had been carried out by tho Freemasons in several

other provinces . AV . Bro . John Thomas rose to propose an amendment , and thero appearing to be sufficient opposition to the measure to lead to a long discussion , at the recommendation of the P . G . M . tho matter was for the present postponed . Bro . Holmes gavo notice that ho should revive the proposition at the next annual meeting , and hoped , for the credit of the province , thafc ifc would bo continued to be urged until it was carried . rpHIS company , incorporated on tho 17 th April last , promises to bo -L tho most successful undertaking in which the Freemasons of Portsmouth havo ever o . ubarkcd . Tlio nominal Capital is £ 3 , 000 , iu sis hundred shares of £ 5 uach . £ 2 per share is p ail on ul lotmout , aud the remainder is to bo paid iu calls of £ 1 each , at intervals of not loss than ono month . This capital , with judicious management , should bo sufficient to carry out tho main object of tho undertaking , i . e ., to provide

suitable accommodation for tho several Masonic Lodges in Portsmouth , afc a fair rental , so as to make tho company commercially successful , by paying a moderate dividend to the shareholders . Tho Lodge rooms will bo available for the accommodation of Lodges in April next ; and from tho largo and increasing support given to tho company by tho members of tho Craft in tho borough , irrespective of the Lodges to

which they belong , ifc bids fair lo prove a lucrative investment , and strengthen tho fraternal fooling already existing batwce . il the several Lodges in this locality . Somo years since , a joint committee was appointed to consider a scheme for building a hall in which the several Lodges could moot , but it was considered impracticable , and tho idea was abandoned . Had a company boon formed at that timo iu tho

same manner as the present venture , wo doubt not that a considerable sum of money wonld havo been saved by tha Lodges , and the Masonio Charitable Institutions correspondingly benefited . Tho premises to bo built at No . 79 Commercial-road , Landport , for the accommodation of the Masonic Club about to bo formed will form a handsome building , in keeping wifch tho lino oflicers of tho Gas Company , at tho corner of

the block of buildings . Accommodation will also bo provided in this building for tho Borough of Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce , and there will be an entrance to tho Lodge rooms in tbo rear . Tho foundation stone of this building will bo laid in the courso of a fow weeks by the Worshipful tho Mayor ( AV . D . King , Esq . ) The desira - bility of forming a Masonic Club for tho Freemasons of the borough

has been long apparent , aud ifc is believed that it will prove the most successful part of tho undertaking . Considerable credit is duo to tho directorate , for tho judicious and economical manner in which this company has been promoted ; and especially to the Chairman ( tho Mayor ) , and tho Vice-Chairman ( Mr . Councillor G . T . Cunningham ) who havo been indefatigable iu thoir exertions to mako tho company

a success . Somo 400 shares have boon taken m the short space of six weeks , and tho remaining 200 will doubtless bo quickly disposed of .
