summer costume , under the direction of the popular W . M . Bro . Frank Thornton , and the genial Secretary Bro . James Young , started off in first-class style from the Bromley Vestry Hall at 10 . 30 a . m : After a pleasant drive the " Eagle " Hotel , Snaresbrook , was reached , where the first halt was called for . After refreshing the inner man the journey was continued by way of Woodford Bridge , Claybury , on to Hainault

Hall , Chigwell Row . Here another halt was made , and the company were provided with a substantial luncheon and light refreshments , which were partaken of on the lawn , and which were catered for by the proprietor Bro . E . A . A . Hambridge P . M ., who had provided most liberally for the comforts of the pleasure seekers . Bro . Hambridge had also provided plenty of outdoor amusements for his guests , including croquet , lawn tennis and bowls . After having whiled away between two and three hours in this way , the party

formed themselves into a group and were photographed by Bro . H . Soar , of Grove Road , Mile End . They then mounted the coaches again , and had a p leasant drive through Stapleford Abbott , Passingford Bridge , to the " White Hart , " Abridge , wher * tea was provided . After a short stay the coaches were again mounted , and the journey continued to the " King ' s Head , " Chigwell , at which establishment arrangements had been made with Bro . Lewis for a banquet .

At the appointed hour the ladies and gentlemen sat down and did full justice to the many good things provided . At the conclusion of the repast , the usual toasts were honoured , interspersed with capital songs rendered by Miss M . Boubemard , Bro . Newport , Bro . Green , and several others , the accompanist being Professor Latter , R . A . M .

During the evening each of the lady guests was presented with a souvenir of the event . It should be mentioned that special souvenirs were given to Mrs . Thornton and Miss Hambridge . The coaches were in readiness in good time , and the return journey was commenced , a call being made en route at the " Eagle . " After a pleasant drive , Bow was reached about 11 . 30 , everybody concerned having spent a most enjoyable day .

GALLERY LODGE , No . 1928 . THE annual picnic of this Lodge , of which Bro . F . W . Brodie is the W . M ., took place on Saturday , 23 rd ult ., and proved an interesting and enjoyable day . It was by special train in saloon carriages to Salisbury , and thenoe by special carriages to Stonehenge . Due provision was made for the necessary creature comforts en route , and dinner ' was served at'the While Hart Hotel on the return to Salisbury . Everything proved satisfactory . ' * * »

INSTRUCTION .

EGYPTIAN LODGE , No . 27 . A VERY good meeting was held on Monday , at 7 o'clock , at the house of Bros . Levy and Franks , the King ' s Arms , Beech . Street ( corner of Golden Lane ) , Barbican , B . C ., those present including Bros . H . Grimsdall W . M . 1185 W . M ., Y . Bolton S . W ., G . Chapman J . W ., H . Hill P . M . Free , S . W . Cropper Sec , W . A . Haskins S . D ., E . Burgess J . D ., J . J . Skellorn I . G ., G . Wilson , H . A . Woodington , J . Wynman .

The Lodge being formed , and all formalities having been observed , was opened in the second degree , whereupon the W . M . examined Bro . G . Wilson as a candidate for raising , and he was entrusted . The Lodge was advanced to the third degree , and the ceremony gone through , including the traditional history . The Lodge was resumed to the first degree , and the ceremony of initiation was rehearsed , Bro . Woodington acting as . candidate .

Both the ceremonies were perfectly and impressively rendered by Bro . Grimsdall , who is the Master of the Lewis Lodge , at Wood Green , and this being the first time we had the pleasure of seeing that Brother in the chair we congratulate him on his excellent performance . Bro . Bolton S . W . was elected W . M . for Monday next , after which the Lodge was closed .

WOODROW LODGE , No . 1708 , ON Monday , at 3 o'clock , at Bro . Rudderforth ' s ( Stone ' s ) Restaurant , Pan ton Street , Haymarket , Bros . M . Cawley W . M . 172 W . M ., J . 'E . Culverhouse S . W ., T . Burgess J . W ., 0 . Woodrow P . M . Free , W . West acting Sec , G . E . Genet S . D ., J . Wynman J . D ., J . G . Lobb I . G ., G . Baker , A . Myall .

The ceremony of initiation was rehearsed , Bro . Baker acting as candidate . This being ended the Lodge was opened in the second degree , and Bro " . W . West was presented as W . M .-elect . He having taken the obligation the Lodge was opened in the third degree , and Bro . West was installed . Lodge having been resumed to the first degree , the W . M . proceeded to rehearse the investiture of Officers , whilst Bro . Cawley delivered the three addresses in his usual able manner . Bro . T . Burgess was elected W . M . for Monday next . « * *

—; o;—LODGE OF FAITH , No . 581 , THE regular meeting , held at the Bradford Hotel , Mill Street , Manchester , on Wednesday , 20 th ult ., was opened by Bro . Dr . E . E . Jones Worshipful Master , and waa well attended by members and visitors , among the latter being several distinguished Brethren , including Bro . Capt ; C . R . 'N . Beswicke-Royds Dep . Prov . Gr . Master , 0 . D . Gheetham P . M . 093 Prov . S . G . W ., T . D . Hooper P . P . G . T ., W . Bee P . P . G . A . D . C ., and others . -

After the reading and confirmation of minutes , Bro . James Wallwork was raised to the sublime degree of M . M . by Bro . Chas . H . Griffiths I . P . M ., assisted by Bro . S . Andrew 8 . W ., who presented and explained the working tools to the candidate .

This being the jubilee year of the Lodge several very appropriate gifts have been made by members , some of which we have previously described , viz ., a handsome organ by Bro . Jones W . M ' ., a tripod by Bro . CarruthersS . D ., and a three volume work , Gould ' s " History of Freemasonry , " by Bro . J , Harrison . Recent additions are a box of working tools by Bro . Matthew Goth J . W ., a set of gavels and blocks , and a pair of Warden ' s Columns by Bro . S . Andrew S . W ., the latter bearing an inscription as follows : —

Presented by BHO . S . ANDEEW S . W ., fee the Faith Lodge , 581 , in commemoration of ltd ifubiiesi 1900 .

Provincial.

Before the Lodge was closed Bro . Royds addressed a few words to the Brethren , saying how pleased he was to bo among them , that he was much impressed with the very handsome room in which they met , and also with the manner in which they had carried on their business that day . It -was not customary to praise Officers in Lodge , but the general excellent work on this occasion justified the departure from rule . «¦ i

_ , •»_ . Bros . Gheetham and Hooper also spoke , and praised the W . M ., his Officers , and Bro . Griffiths for the work right through the ceremony . The former also reverted to the forthcoming Festival , saying that he had great promises from the Lodge of Faith in connection with the same . He sincerely trusted other Lodges would do whatever they could , this of course without injury to themselvesor to anyone connected with them .

, At the festive board which followed , Loyal and Masonic toasts were varied by songs , recitations , & c , given by Bros . Griffiths , Goth , Radoliffe , G . Mellor , Dobson , Roberts , and others , whilst Bro . Hibbs treated the company to several songs on the gramaphone .

ALBERT VICTOR L 0 D 3 E , No . 1773 . THE last meeting of the session , recently held at the Pendleton Town Hall , was a success in every way . The minutes having been read and confirmed Bro . William Young was passed to the degree of F . C ., the ceremony being performed by Bro . Thomas Threlfall P . M . P . P . G . P . At the festive board which followed , Loyal and Masonic toasts were varied by songs , & c , rendered by Bros . Fred Daniels , Mills , Sellars , Hart , and Roberts .

THE annual pic-nic in connection with the Lodge took place on Saturday , 7 th inst ., the place selected being Castleton , Derbyshire . A large number of members and friends met at the Central Station , Manchester , and at one p . m . left in a large railway saloon carriage for Ghapel-en-le-Frith . At the latter place conveyances had been provided for a drive through the

romantic and picturesque Dore Valley , to Castleton , this neighbourhood being described as the Switzerland of England . About half-way on the route , a halt was made , the party posing on one of a series of rooks which form what is termed the Brack Edge Quarry , and here Bro . Burton made good use of his camera by photographing the group .

Upon arrival at the Castle Hotel , Castleton , the party separated to view the various interesting objects abounding here , returning to a substantial tea , provided by the proprietor ( A . Ollerenshaw ) . A few toasts were proposed and duly responded to , that of the W . M . falling to the lot o £ Bro . Blease I . P . M ., who , in his remarks , praised the Pic-nio Committee for their efforts , which had been so successful in results . "

Bro . William Woodeson Worshipful Master responded , and reverted to the absence of Bro . Saml . Statham P . M . P . P . G . Tr ., whom all delighted to honour . He expressed his sincere pleasure that they had with them that day such a large proportion of ladies . Unfortunately the members of the fair sex , the hands that rocked the cradle and ruled the world , were present with them far too seldom . He extended to them a cordial welcome , and felt satisfied that they had enjoyed themselves .

The remainder of the drive was made by way of Chinley , from which station the party returned by train to Manchester , arriving there shortly after nine p . m . On the journey songs were rendered by Messrs . Ainsworth and Dolphin , and by Bros . Threlfall , Mills , Hart , G . L . Hardcastle , E . Roberts , and others .
