Books Of The Day.

the fates will be perverse indeed if there is not a large demand for this handsome volume . It is issued at a price which will prohibit its entrance into many homos , but it will certainly be appreciated warmly by all who can afford to buy it . For the Flag . A Painting book of the Flags- of all Nations ( is ) . —Thomas Nelson and Sons .

AN excellent present for an embryo Titian . It is an admirable example which is here set , for whereas our infant artists used to be set down to draw the likeness of things to be found neither in heaven nor on earth , they are taught , by such books as " For the Flag ' to paint the figures of the soldiers and sailors of the world , already skilfully drawn . They may thus acquire much useful knowledge , and by also reading the brief , bright text , may come to understand a great deal about the warriors of every clime .

Children of the Empire ( is ) . —Thomas Nelson and Sons . A BOOK for those who love peace rather than war . The pictures are so good in their way that we could wish there were still more of them ; for they are sure to delight the youngsters . Among the many signs of the times an increasing interest in colonial and foreign matters is prominent , and such books as the one before us are really of service in teaching useful facts concerning the peoples whom we rule . The picture of the Zulus at their fire is perhaps the best .

Old Kins Cole ' s Book of Nursery Rhymes . Macmillan and Co ., Limited . MOST of these rhymes are very old friends , but we are glad to see them once again . He would be a clever man who could tell us why certain very simple stories have been popular for ages , so popular that no child who has ever learnt to read is quite ignorant

of them . Publishers have done us all a service by collecting so many nursery rhymes into handsome volumes suitably illustrated . Many of our prime favourites , such as " Little Polly Flinders " and " Simple Simon , " are included in this fine gift-book , and if King Cole did select them himself , as the title implies , he showed very good taste . He will be the talk of the town this Christmas , as he has so often been before .

Valour for Victoria . Stirring deeds that won the Queen's Cross . By James A . Manson , with illustrations by J . F . Waugh , George Soper , K . M . Skeaping , F . Buchanan , G . Thomas , & c . ( is 6 d ) . —George Newnes , Limited . IF boys do not live valiant lives and die bravely it must be their

own fault . There is certainly no lack of incentives . A number of stories of heroic deeds are gathered together in this little book , and we are glad to be able to say that they are well written , with a conscientious regard for truth . W e may as well read history as fiction . "Valour for Victoria" combines the merits of both .

The Cape and its Story or the Struggle for South Africa . By the author of "Breaking the Record , " & c , & c . ( 2 s 6 d ) . — Thomas Nelson and Sons . THE story of South Africa is destined to be a very complex narrative , if we may judge from our present standpoint . It was from the first occupied by very diverse races , and has for long been a bone of contention among peoples not native to its soil . The

author of this volume has told the story of some of these contentious very skilfully , . and , if read through carefully , " The Cape and its Story" affords an excellent introduction to the study of South African history . We certainly cannot endorse all that is said concerning either Lobengula or Paul Kruger , but the author usually expresses his opinion modestly , and is entitled to be heard with respect upon a subject which he has evidently studied with much care . Messrs . Nelson deserve our thanks for a well-timed volume .

CasseEI ' s Magazine . Illustrated . December 1900 to November 1901 ( 8 s ) . —Cassell and Co ., Limited . THE pleasure with which we peruse the monthly parts of this popular serial , as they from time to time come under our notice , seems to be increased four fold when at the end of a year we have the complete twelvemouth before us ; and at the price at which

Messrs . Cassell are able to place this annual—handsomely boundbefore the public they indeed supply a marvel of interesting information and amusement at the minimum of cost . As a gift book the year ' s issue of Cassell ' s Magazine at 8 s is hard to beat , or if smaller volumes are desired , the same serial may be had in half yearly volumes at 5 s each ; in either case we are sure their

presentation would be appreciated by young or old , and would provide the means of lightly passing a few moments , or providing entertainment for many days through the succeeding year . The illustrations in Cassell ' s are no inconsiderable feature , and they appear to even greater advantage when looked at in bulk as they can be in the collected issues of the year .

Messrs . T . Nelson and Sons , the pioneers of the India paper pocket volume , announce the completion of their " New Century " Scott , and the inauguration of a fresh series on a comprehensive basis . They propose to publish standard works in history , biography , poetry , travel , and general literature , similar in size and type to the already highly-appreciated Dickens and Thackeray , and printed on the same fine India paper . As everybody knows .

Messrs . Nelsons "New Century" Library has not only laid booklovers under a deep obligation , but has produced a revolution in the publishing trade . Pocket volumes are now the order of the day , for many of the important publishing houses have paid Messrs . Nelson the sincere flattery of imitation . The masterpiece for the pocket has come to stay , and Messrs . Nelson are to be congratulated on the originality and enterprise which have given readers all the world over so delightful a boon . The new series will open
