LANCASHIRE CHARITY .

TITE Committee of the Liverpool Masonic Festival and Ball met on the 29 th ult ., in the Masonic Hall , Hope Street , Liverpool , for the purpose of furthering business in connection with the Festival , which is to be held on the 14 th January

next , in the Town Hall . The Festival will be held under the banners of the Kirkdale Lodge , No . 1756 , and the Prince Lodge , No . 2316 . Bro . George A . Harradon P . Prov . G . Treas . is the Chairman of Committee , and the Vice-Chairmen are Bros . J . Plumpton P . M . 1570 , and D . Greame 1380 , with Bro .

Baron H . Williams 1756 lion . Secretary . It was reported at the meeting that a communication had been received from the Earl of Latiiom Prov . Grand Master of the West Lancashire Province , that he would be pleased to bestow his

patronage on the Festival ; also that the Lord Mayor of Liverpool Bro . Alderman Petrie and the Lady Mayoress had consented to give their presence and support . The names of upwards of 100 Patrons were reported , as also a considerable number of Stewards , & c .

THE unfavourable weather of Sunday did not prevent Brethren attending the meeting of the Club held at the Cavendish Rooms , Cavendish Square , for there were about

sixty Brethren present . Bro . Dr . Jo'hn Eyre being well acquainted with the strict regulations of the Club took his position as W . M . punctually at the appointed hour , assisted by Bros . H . Saunion S . W ., W . Aiming J . W ., Robert Manuel P . M . Preceptor , R . D . Cummings P . M . Treasurer , J . J . Thomas

answered the questions and was entrusted . Lodge was advanced to the second degree , and the ceremony of passing was rehearsed , including the explanation of the tracing board . Lodge was resumed to the first degree .

Bro . Robert Manuel P . M . Preceptor complimented the W . M . on his working , but advised him to give the ceremony a little slower , as it would then have ' a more impressive effect . The W . M . thanked BED . Manuel for his compliment . He would not forget his good advice .

The report of tne Sub-Committee appointed to arrange the annual banquet was read and adopted . The following letter was read from Bro . A . Parolini , who was elected a member on the 1 st inst .

To Bro . J . Percy Fitzgerald P . M . Secretary of the Logic Club : Dear Sir and Brother , —As I am grateful for being accepted as a Brother of your Club I permit myself to make a present to the Lodge of a Bust of Her late honoured Majesty Oueen Victoria .

This Bust has been approved by letter to the famous Italian artist Ricarclo Aurili from H . R . H . Princess Louise , Duchess of Argyle , as follows : Kensington Palace , 14 th July 1897 . H . R . H . Princess Louise , Marchioness of Lome , having inspected the bust of Her Majesty the Queen considers it a

fine and dignified work , and a wonderful likeness , taking into consideration the fact that the artist had no sitting from life . Being approved by H . R . H . I feel proud to present to the Club a similar bust as the original . I beg to say that I am the lucky possessor of the original bust , and also the letter . Trusting it will be accepted by the Brethren ,

M . that they had a visitor present , Bro . E . F . Knight , who was severely wounded at Belmont , South Africa , and no doubt their worthy

Preceptor would express a few words of welcome on behalf of the Club . Bro . Manuel accorded the Brother a most hearty greeting . His experience had been a very sad one , as he had

lost an arm while fighting for his country . He asked Bro . Harry Nicholls P . M . Director of Ceremonies to' conduct the guest to the chair of honour . This compliment was highly appreciated and acknowledged .

Bro . J . J . Thomas P . G . Std . Br . Treasurer B . A . said he had a very ] Dleasant communication to make , which was that ^" 320 had been paid in for the Benevolent Association during the current year . That day they were able to have ten ballots

of five guineas each , and they had fallen to the following Brethren : W . ' J . Webster ( 2 ) , W . Fisher , J . Hart , Allen Gill , E . Gatfield , Dr . W . H . George , S . P . Pririgle , and S . Ellis . Bro . Thomas thought it was a very pleasant report . It was a record .

The election of the Committee and Musical Committee

will take place on Sunday , 12 th January , several Brethren . being nominated . Bro . G . H . Peters was specially recommended by Bro . Duck for the position of Assistant Steward . Bro . Duck also announced that the annual oyster and champagne lunch would take place on Sunday , 22 nd inst .

Bro . H . Saunion P . M . was elected W . M . for to-morrow

( Sunday ) , and his faultless working bemg well known we expect to see an especial attendance . ******************

A SPECIAL meeting of the Mother Kilwinning Lodge , No . o , was held on the 26 th ult ., at Kilwinning . No business was introduced , and the Lodge was immediately closed . The Brethren attending , numbering close on one hundred , afterwards re-assembled in the large hall of Mother

Kilwinning building , under the presidency of Bro . Matthew Arthur , of Carlung W . M . and Prov . G . M . of Ayrshire . An excellent dinner was there served , and afterwards toasts were introduced and some well-rendered songs were contributed by various Brethren .

Bro . William Scott Past Depute Master of No . o , in proposing the Imperial Forces , thought that although he was a man of peace , everyone should take an active interest , in these stirring times , in the Imperial Forces . Captain Louis Pearson replied , stating that he had found since he was sent to South Africa that the Craft was more

popular in the Army than he had previously thought . He related the story of a huge box of socks and other comfortable clothing sent to him for the men of his company , and in the centre of the soft goods was a jar , addressed to the captain , the contents of which was very comforting .

The Rev . W . Lee Ker , M . A ., Grand Chaplain , proposed " Our Guests , " who included the following Brethren of the 4 th Battalion Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders , recently returned from South Africa : —Major William Mure , of Caldwell ; Captain Louis Pearson , Sergeant-Major D . Muir ,

Colour-Sergeant J . Hogg , Sergeant-Drummer J . Tait , Pipe-Major John M'Kay , Cycle-Sergeant Instructor J . W . Clark , Serg . F . Rodger , and Quartermaster-Sergeant W . M'Lachlan . The Reverend Brother said that while , like Brother Scott , he was a man of peace , and was so by profession , he was not

a man of " peace at any price . " He thought that there would always be times of peace and times of war . Our soldiers and the Brethren with them that night had been , in the war in South Africa , defending the glory of our country in a war that had been forced upon us . He thought it was their duty to give the Brethren returning a fitting welcome . They had
