THE monthly meeting of the Committee of the Royal Masonir Benevolent Institution was held on Wednesday afternoon , at Freemasons' Hall , Colonel Creaton , Grand Treasurer , in the chair . candidates were placed on the list for election in May . Bros . R . W Stewart , Rev . A . F . A . Woodford , W . Hilton , W . Stephens , C . J Perceval , Charles Lacey , and George Bolton wore appointed a Committee to revise the Bye-Laws , and a special general meeting to consider any alterations wa = > appointed for 9 th November , at a quartet to four p . m . Bro . J . C . Thompson was duly received and installed as a member of the Order by the M . P . S ., Bro . Whytehead acting as Prefect . The St . Peter Sanctuary and Commandery of St . John were subsequently opened , and these degrees were conferred upon Bro . Thompson , Bro . Whytehead acting as Commander , and Bro . Millington as Conductor .
SACRED HARMONIC SOCIETY . —This great Musical Institution commences its Fiftieth Season on Friday , 11 th November , at . James ' s Hall , with a performance of Handel ' s " Tndas Maccabeus , " Sir Michael Costa still fulfilling tbe position of Conductor , which he has , with so much honour to himself and the Society , held for thirty-four years . As the Society is now entering npon its Jubilee Year , it may
perhaps be not inappropriate to refer to the object for which the Society was established , viz ., to give the best performances of the best Sacred works of the greatest Composers , and to recall to memory the manner in which that object has beeu carried out . The Society restored and fully established the practice of giving complete Oratorios , instead of selections made up of fragments detached from the
several works to which they belonged , and in so doing revived Handel ' s "Judas Maccabeus , " "Israel in Egypt , " " Samson , " " Solomon , " " Joshua , " " Saul , " " Jephthah , " " Deborah , " " Athaliab , " and " Belshazzar . " It gave the first performance in London of Mendelssohn's " St . Paul , " " Elijah , " and " Christus j" Costa ' s " Eli" and " Naaman : " Benedict ' s " Legend of St . Cecilia : " Nenkomm ' s
"David ; " Macfarren ' s " St . John tho Baptist ; " Sullivan ' s "Martyr of Antioch ; " Elvey ' s " Resurrection and Ascension ; " Griesbach ' s " Daniel , " and Psalms by Spohr and Dr . Crotch j and the only performance in London of Bach ' s " St . Matthew Passion" in its entirety . It has exhibited the wealth of our English Cathedral music , as well as the finest Latin
Church music , and has brought forward Rossini ' s " Moses in Egypt " in an English form , and restored it to its original position as an oratorio . It has , by its numerous performances , familiarised the public with the great works of Handel , Haydn , Mozart , Beethoven , Mendelssohn , Spohr , Rossini , Cherubini , Dr . Crotch , and many others ; and has also had the sole direction of the musical arrangements of the
nine Handel Festivals given at the Crystal Palace , besides being entrusted with the control of tbe musical ceremonies in connection with all our great International Exhibitions . John the Baptist , " Gnonod's " Messe Soleni-elle , " Beethoven ' s " Mount of Olives , " Sullivan ' s "Martyr of

Michael ' s Alley , Cornhill . As it is well-known to be one of the best schools in which Royal Arch Masons cm receive instruction , all its meetings aro well attended . It has tho services of a Preceptor , who whilo
stnet ' y adhering to the ritual of Royal Arch Masonry , corrects any little fault with a kindness and urbanity that makes his instruction a pleasure to all who receive it . At tho opening meeting Comp . F . Brown occupied lhe chair of Z ., Briggs H ., Maidwell J ., Webb N ., Gillard P .
