ENTERTAINMENT NOTES .

Palace . —There was an agreeable surprise in store for those present afc the Palace Theatre on Thursday of last week . During the performance of the American Biograph a picture was thrown on the screen which drew forth the heartiest cheers from a delighted auditorium . In admirable presentment were seen the Guards , home from the Soudan , marching on the way to Wellington Barracks . The view is taken as the regiment is wheeling round from York Road to Westminster Bridge Road . Neither Bro . Morton nor the manager of the American Biograph ever hit on a happier idea , or carried it

better and quicker before . The photograph was taken shortly after two p . m ., and by 10 . 30 was being shown to prolonged applause . The feat , from a photographic point of view , is remarkable , observes the " Daily Telegraph . " To everyone the picture was all too short ; lack of time forbade the entire film being got ready . The following evening twice as much was seen , and it is scarcely necessary to say that for a long while to come no more popular item will figure on the Palace programme than the " Return of the Guards .

Shaftesbury . —The members of the Eccentric Lodge , No . 2488 , assisted by the Eccentric Club , arranged a capital entertainment at this Theatre , on Monday , for the benefit of the widow of Charles Ryley , an actor well known in connection with several metropolitan and provincial Theatres . The programme included scenes from " The Belle of New York , " and " Her Royal Highness , " together with the comedietta " Papa ' s Wife , " and a miscellaneous entertainment . There was a full attendance , indeed all the

stalls and dress circle seats were sold in the club , and only a comparative small number of tickets were offered to the public . On these occasions one can only vary tbewell known remark , andexclaim '' See how these Bohemians love one another . " The arrangements were in the hands of Bros . Fred Bishop , H . 3 . Homer , Sydney Jousiffe , A . 3 . Thomas , Arthur Tite , andW . H . White , who formed the Executive Committee . Bros . Walter Beard and 3 . D .

Langton were the Treasurers , the heavy Secretarial duties were undertaken by Bros , Tom Fraser and Jack Harrison , and the Stage Managers were Bros . Frank Parker and Louis Mason . The result is that sufficient money has been obtained to make a nice little provision for Mrs . Ryley , who naturally desires to return her sincere and grateful thanks to the Eccentrics for their kindness in organising the benefit , avid to the artistes who so generously gave their services .
