THERE waa a very large and influential gathering of brethren resident in Leeds aud the more distant parte of the Province of West Yorkshire , on Saturday , the Sth inst ., to witness the installation of Bro . Fretwell S . W . The gathering was held at the Masonio Hall , Great George Street , Leeds , and upwards of 70 brethren , including four Grand Officers , testified their interest in fche event by their

presence . Amongst the many brethren who supported the W . M . Bro . Chas . Middleton at the opening of the Lodge were : —Bros . H . Smith D . P . G . M . Past Grand Deacon of England , W . F . Smithson P . M . Grand Deacon of England , and Chairman of the West Yorkshire Charity Committee , Col . Hartley ( a Past Grand Officer ) , V . W . Bro . the Rev . Dr . Smyth , D . D ., LL . D ., Past Grand Chaplain of England ,

M . of Lodge Zetland , he was officially represented by Bro . Clayton S . W . and W . M . elect . There was a numerous gathering of Leeds Past Masters , whilst Broa . S . A . Auty W . M . 2321 and Last Secretary 2321 represented the Bradford

breth ren . Every Officer of Lodge Prudence was in his place , and there was also a large assembly of the brethren of that Lodge . Indeed , the gathering was in all respects a most brilliant and successful one . The distinguished visitors having been saluted according to ancient custom , and the minutes of the past meeting having been adopted , Bro . Trevor P . M . D . C . presented Bro . Fretwell for the

benefifc of installation , remarking that as Bro . Frefcwell ' a old and close friend , and as the one who introduced him into Masonry , he esteemed "t a privilege to have been asked to perform that pleaaant duty . ¦ Bro . Fretwell had passed through the various offices of the Lodge , aQ d was fche first initiate to be presented for installation , the brethren having ratified that choice by their unanimous vote . The

ceremony was then proceeded with , and waa taken part in by V . W . Bro . Dr . Smyth , Bros . Middleton Mason , Trevor and Dimery . The difficult though moafc intereating part of the ceremony allotted to Dr . Smyth was splendidly performed , and waa a revelation , to those visiting brethren who had nofc previously had the privilege of hearing our venerable and distinguished brother go through the Ritual . The

brethren having been admitted to the Lodge , tho ceremony waa completed , in a manner which gave the keenest enjoyment to all who were privileged to take part iu it , and redounded to the credit of the Lodge , ¦ which is fortunate to possess such a brilliant and distinguished body of Past Masters . position in Masonry than for a Brother to be W . M . of his Mother Lodge . Their great confidence and their continued affection demanded great things from him . Though he might fall abort of hia own ideas , he was sure tbey would always give him credit for a sincere attachment to tbat Lodge , and an earnest desire to promote its welfare . Peace and harmony reigned in that Lodge , it was one of their dis .

tinguishing characteristics , and he hoped , nay , he was sure , it would be maintained . He felt like tho captain of a goodly craft that waa wafted from the haibour by a favouring breeze ; might it please tho G . A . O . T . U . to permit him to bring ifc safely to port after a prosperous and happy voyage . Bro . Watson P . M . P . P . G . Supt . of Works , after five years' service aa charity representative of the Lodge on the

Provincial Committee , resigned . Au honourable and successful record for charity has been made , thanks to Bro . Watson ' s persistent efforts , and a most cordial vote of thanks waa presented to that Brother for his brilliant services . In hia stead Bro . Tudor Trevor was unanimously elected . The two Wardens were selected to represent the Lodge upon the Local Charity ( Almoners' Fund ) . The

W . M . being joint auditor with Bro . Rickard P . M . 304 . Bro . Fretwell then , on behalf of the Lodge , presented to the I . P . M . a Past Master ' s jewel in recognition of the efficient manner ia whioh he had discharged his dnties during his year of office . In making the presentation the W . M . bore cordial testimony fco the urbanity aud the kindness of heart , whioh had characterised Bro . Middleton in all his

dealings and asanred him that on vacating the chair he poasessed the sincere affection of every member of the Lodge . He would wear the jewel near his heart and that would remind him that bis happiness and prosperity were very near the hearts of hia brethren . Bro . Middletoa ia reply bore eloquent testimony to the assistance he bad received from hia Pasfc Masters and Officers , and said that not one

unpleasant word had been used . He reciprocated from his heart fche affectionate feelings whioh the brethren entertained towards him . The remainder of the buaineas having been transacted , Bro . Henry Smith D . P . G . M . addressed a few words of congratulation to the Brethren , and complimented tbe newly appointed Officers on the manner in whioh they had performed their duties . Hearty good

wishes were exchanged , and the proceedings were brought to a close . Letters of regret at absence , and congratulation for the W . M . wera read from Bros . Scott Young P . M . Prov . Grand Standard Bearer West Lancashire ( an old member of Lodge Prudence ) , Webster ( Bradford ) , Lucas ( Marton ) , Robert Craig P . M . P . P . G . D ., whose absence , owing to ill-health , was sympathetically alluded to by the

W . M . and other Brethren ; W . Bro . Townsend P . M . P . P . G . Organiafc & o . The R . W . P . G . M . ( Bro . T . W . Tew , J . P . ) wrote stating that , owing to an attack of asthma he had been forbidden by bia medical adviser to be out in the evening . Deep sympathy was expressed for thia popular brother , who is beloved by every Lodge iu hia large Province . An adjournment waa made to the Banqueting Room where , under

the presidency of Bro . Fretwell , a well-erved repast , provided by the Tyler Bro . Barrand , was partaken of . The Loyal toasts having received hearty recognition , the W . M . proposed the Grand Master and the Graud Lodge , to which V . W . Brother Dr . Smyth responded . In the course of a pointed and eloquent address he expressed pleasure at so many of hia clerical brethren joining the Order . It

was many years ago that he became a member of the Craft , and in those days it was considered a shame for a clergyman to be a brother . No doubt in those days objectionable incidents were noticed in some Lodges , but this could no longer be said of the present day , and tbe clergy , by joining the Order , did incalculable good . The Order was flourishing in a most wonderful manner , and it would continue to do

so more and more . Bro . Trevor gave the Provincial Grand Master and Provincial Grand Lodgp , and paid earnest tribute to the wisdom which marked the rulers of the Craffc in their Province . W . Bro . Tew stood prominent ; in fche Craffc as one of the most culture ! and industrioua Maaons in the country . They were very proud of bim , and prayed that the G . A . O . T . U . might

spare him for many years to rule over the Province whioh loved him so much . Ho also spoke iu eloquent praise of the D . P . G . M . and the other members of the Prov . G . Lodge . Bro . H . Green Prov . Grand Secretary responded , aa also did Bros . Col . Harkey and Bro . Mathewman . The toast of the W . M . waa received with enthusiasm acd suitably responded to by Bro . Fretwell . The Sister Lodges was a

toast received with much honour , and it was responded to by the W . M . ' s present . Bro . Trevor , the newly appointed Charity representative of the Lodge , in felicitions terras propoaed " The Charities , " to which Bro . 0 . L . Mason responded . He earnestly pleaded on behalf of fcho Boys' School , whioh he said had been thoroughly reorganised . The change had been brought about , in a great measure , by the action

of West Yorkshire , and he earnestly besought the brethren , by their subscriptions to enable the Committee to carry on their great and noble work to a succasful issue . The Visiting Brethren called forth a cordial and fraternal speech from Bro . Auty , of Acacia Lodge , Bradford , a Lodge founded on similar principles to those of Lodge Prudence . He expressed the hope that the coming year might bo

marked by au interchange of visits , a suggestion which waa cordially received . Bros . West , Richards , and others also responded , wishing every success to the Lodge and its W . M . Bro . Fretwell then gavo the toasfc of his Officers , and expressed his belief that aided bv NO capable a body of Masons as were hia Officers hia year of office promised to ^ be a happy and successful one . It was six years tfia very night since the consecration of the Lodge . Now an initiate wat

W . M ., and with three exceptions all the Officers were initiates , a goo augury of future success . Each one of the Officers suitably responded , all expressing affectionate regard for the newly installed W . M . The Tyler ' s toast brought this most successful meeting to a conclusion . During the evening songs and recitations were given by Bros . Buckley Organist , Tom Atkinson S . W ., Walter Storey , Fitton , Begbie Abbott , ancl others .

The two Wardens were selected to represent the Lodge upon the Local Charity ( Almoners' Fund ) . The

W . M . being joint auditor with Bro . Rickard P . M . 304 . Bro . Fretwell then , on behalf of the Lodge , presented to the I . P . M . a Past Master ' s jewel in recognition of the efficient manner ia whioh he had discharged his dnties during his year of office . In making the presentation the W . M . bore cordial testimony fco the urbanity aud the kindness of heart , whioh had characterised Bro . Middleton in all his

dealings and asanred him that on vacating the chair he poasessed the sincere affection of every member of the Lodge . He would wear the jewel near his heart and that would remind him that bis happiness and prosperity were very near the hearts of hia brethren . Bro . Middletoa ia reply bore eloquent testimony to the assistance he bad received from hia Pasfc Masters and Officers , and said that not one

unpleasant word had been used . He reciprocated from his heart fche affectionate feelings whioh the brethren entertained towards him . The remainder of the buaineas having been transacted , Bro . Henry Smith D . P . G . M . addressed a few words of congratulation to the Brethren , and complimented tbe newly appointed Officers on the manner in whioh they had performed their duties . Hearty good

wishes were exchanged , and the proceedings were brought to a close . Letters of regret at absence , and congratulation for the W . M . wera read from Bros . Scott Young P . M . Prov . Grand Standard Bearer West Lancashire ( an old member of Lodge Prudence ) , Webster ( Bradford ) , Lucas ( Marton ) , Robert Craig P . M . P . P . G . D ., whose absence , owing to ill-health , was sympathetically alluded to by the

W . M . and other Brethren ; W . Bro . Townsend P . M . P . P . G . Organiafc & o . The R . W . P . G . M . ( Bro . T . W . Tew , J . P . ) wrote stating that , owing to an attack of asthma he had been forbidden by bia medical adviser to be out in the evening . Deep sympathy was expressed for thia popular brother , who is beloved by every Lodge iu hia large Province . An adjournment waa made to the Banqueting Room where , under

the presidency of Bro . Fretwell , a well-erved repast , provided by the Tyler Bro . Barrand , was partaken of . The Loyal toasts having received hearty recognition , the W . M . proposed the Grand Master and the Graud Lodge , to which V . W . Brother Dr . Smyth responded . In the course of a pointed and eloquent address he expressed pleasure at so many of hia clerical brethren joining the Order . It

was many years ago that he became a member of the Craft , and in those days it was considered a shame for a clergyman to be a brother . No doubt in those days objectionable incidents were noticed in some Lodges , but this could no longer be said of the present day , and tbe clergy , by joining the Order , did incalculable good . The Order was flourishing in a most wonderful manner , and it would continue to do

so more and more . Bro . Trevor gave the Provincial Grand Master and Provincial Grand Lodgp , and paid earnest tribute to the wisdom which marked the rulers of the Craffc in their Province . W . Bro . Tew stood prominent ; in fche Craffc as one of the most culture ! and industrioua Maaons in the country . They were very proud of bim , and prayed that the G . A . O . T . U . might

spare him for many years to rule over the Province whioh loved him so much . Ho also spoke iu eloquent praise of the D . P . G . M . and the other members of the Prov . G . Lodge . Bro . H . Green Prov . Grand Secretary responded , aa also did Bros . Col . Harkey and Bro . Mathewman . The toast of the W . M . waa received with enthusiasm acd suitably responded to by Bro . Fretwell . The Sister Lodges was a

toast received with much honour , and it was responded to by the W . M . ' s present . Bro . Trevor , the newly appointed Charity representative of the Lodge , in felicitions terras propoaed " The Charities , " to which Bro . 0 . L . Mason responded . He earnestly pleaded on behalf of fcho Boys' School , whioh he said had been thoroughly reorganised . The change had been brought about , in a great measure , by the action

of West Yorkshire , and he earnestly besought the brethren , by their subscriptions to enable the Committee to carry on their great and noble work to a succasful issue . The Visiting Brethren called forth a cordial and fraternal speech from Bro . Auty , of Acacia Lodge , Bradford , a Lodge founded on similar principles to those of Lodge Prudence . He expressed the hope that the coming year might bo

marked by au interchange of visits , a suggestion which waa cordially received . Bros . West , Richards , and others also responded , wishing every success to the Lodge and its W . M . Bro . Fretwell then gavo the toasfc of his Officers , and expressed his belief that aided bv NO capable a body of Masons as were hia Officers hia year of office promised to ^ be a happy and successful one . It was six years tfia very night since the consecration of the Lodge . Now an initiate wat

W . M ., and with three exceptions all the Officers were initiates , a goo augury of future success . Each one of the Officers suitably responded , all expressing affectionate regard for the newly installed W . M . The Tyler ' s toast brought this most successful meeting to a conclusion . During the evening songs and recitations were given by Bros . Buckley Organist , Tom Atkinson S . W ., Walter Storey , Fitton , Begbie Abbott , ancl others .
