English Freemasons will be shocked to hear that the charge of belonging to their generous Craft can be regarded as a libel anywhere . It is rather a distinction than otherwise in this island , though a common one happily . In the United States , the native-born citizen rfiparrls ifc almost as a dutv to ha initiated . Free and
Accepted Masons even in France are a very large and powerful body ; but , nevertheless , it is a French Judge who has pronounced that to publish a list of Freemasons which includes the names of men who do not belong to the organisation is a libel . No criticism or comment
appeared in the " Croix du Jura , " the newspaper prose * cuted . It was nothing more than a statement of fact , which proved to be erroneous . But the Editor is sentenced to pay one hundred francs damages to each complainant , one hundred francs fine , and costs no doubt . Of course , there is a difference in the circumstances . Freemasonry is condemned every few weeks by an Encyclical letter from Borne , and every moment of the day by local functionaries ofthe Church . Devout persons may well feel aggrieved by the accusation of an
onenee against ecclesiastical authority . In such a practical point of view nobody would grudge those wronged individuals their four pounds each . But the Judge declared it a criminal libel by inflicting a fine . If Masonry in France be but half as influential in high places as its bitter foes assert , that Judge is likelv to
pay dear for ruling . But the statements of priests and devotees who are really possessed with hatred against the Craft cannot be admitted as evidence . It would be not a little interesting to learn how many Freemasons
there are in France and Italy , whether they multiply , and how fast ? In Italy , indeed , they are certainly growing , and quickly , too . — " Evening Standard . " 0 o o
The accompanying letter was printed in the " Globe " of 10 th inst ., and relates to the article we quoted in our last issue . Sir , —With reference to the communication about Freemasonry from your correspondent in Paris , permit me to say that English *

The Grand Lodge of England does not allow any member of the Lodge under its jurisdiction to visit Grand Orient Lodges , nor are any of their members permitted to visit our Lodges .
