Reports Of Meetings.

Director of Ceremonies , J . Northcott W . M . and W . J . Fisher I . P . M . of the Savage Club Lodge , and Bro . Passmore Edwards . After the Loyal and early Masonic toasts had been honoured , Bro . Manning I . P . M . proposed the health of the Worshipful Master who , in responding , complimented the Brethren on the gratifying financial and numerical strength of the Lodge .

The evening was one of the most successful yet held in connection with the Lodge , says the " Morning Advertiser , " in respect alike of attendance and the amount yielded by the charity box .

o o o CLARENCE LODGE OF INSTRUCTION , No . 263 . THE fourth annual festival in connection with this popular Lodge of Instruction , which is held under the sanction of the Bank of England Lodge , was celebrated with considerable eclat at the Midland Grand Hotel , St . Pancras , on Tuesday , but

unfortunately , owing to the pressure on the resources of the hotel owing to its being Cattle Show week , the accommodation was hardly sufficient for the numerous assembly . However , thanks to the energy of Bro . W . H . Kirby , the worthy Preceptor of theXodge , and the willing assistance of several Brethren , room was made for all .

Bro . Sir Joseph C . Dimsdale Grand Treasurer presided , but resigned the chair in favour of Brother Kirby while in the Lodge Room . Bro . Charles Lewis was appointed S . W ., Bro . C . F . Cox J . W ., and among those present were Bros . R . Clay Sudlow , Henry Sadler ,

and several other members of Grand Lodge , a fair number of Prov . Grand Officers , and many Masters of Metropolitan Lodges . The arrangements reflected great credit upon the Committee : Bros . F . T . Rushton , H . S . Wellcome , C . F . Cox , and the Secretary Bro . W . Baker .

The special attraction of the evening was the working of the First Lecture , which was undertaken by the following Brethren in the respective sections : —First , Morris B . Evans , Second , Henry S . Wellcome , Third , F . W . Ward , Fourth , A . M . Barnard , Fifth , D . D . West , Sixth , James Corp , and Seventh , Charles Lewis .

The sections were delivered in most excellent manner , indeed it has never been our fortune to hear them so well performed , and this result certainly forms the best reward and most acceptable compliment to Bro . W . H . Kirby for all his hard work . At the conclusion of the lecture Bro . Dimsdale proposed that the

sincere and hearty thanks of the Lodge of Instruction should be accorded to thoso Brethren who had worked the sections in so reverent and instructive a manner , and that the same be entered upon the minutes . Bro . Sudlow seconded the proposition , which ¦ was carried with acclamation .

Bro . Kirby , addressing Bro . Dimsdale , thanked him for his presence that evening , as the Brethren are greatly encouraged in their work by the kindness and sympathy of the Grand Officers . He sincerely thanked him for his kind words in proposing a vote of thanks to those who had worked the lecture , and requested that he would allow himself to be enrolled as an honorary member of the Lodge of Instruction .

Bro . Dimsdale said he should deem it a great honour to comply with their request , as he had been most interested and instructed by what he had seen and heard that evening . The Lodge was then closed , and the company adjourned to an upper room where a capital dinner was served .

At its termination Sir J . C . Dimsdale , who presided , gave the usual Loyal toasts , but as he could not very well propose his own health , Bro . Kirby submitted the Grand Officers , of whom three were members of the Clarence Lodge . Bro . R . C . Sudlow , in a most amusing speech acknowledged the

compliment , and suggested that Grand Officers should occasionally visit Lodges of Instruction , not only to encourage young Masons and those worthy Brethren who gave up their time and laboured to expound the ritual , but also to see that the work was properly carried on .

The Chairman , in proposing Success to the Clarence Lodge of Instruction said that any of these Lodges must naturally command the sympathy of the Brethren , as the object was so important to the Craft at large . As Masons they had all passed through the routine , but he wondered how many knew or were even aware of the beautiful and religious ritual they had heard that evening . For

himself he was bound to confess it was his first visit to a Lodge of Instruction and the first time he had heard the beautiful and highly impressive lecture . It went direct to his heart . Freemasonry was established on the only sure and certain rock , and Masons did their best during their transitory existence to relieve

the lot of their unfortunate fellow creatures . A good Mason must be a religious man , and it was thc aim of Lodges of Instruction to teach them this great precept . He thought Bro . Kirby did credit to the Craft , and was an honour to his Lodge , for which he had laboured so assiduously . Personally he thanked them for their kind reception and the compliment they had paid him .

Bro . Kirby , in response , said he was gratified and much moved by the kind words that fell from Bro . Dimsdale , and they would prove an incentive to them all to do far more before their next Festival . The Clarence Lodge of Instruction was only one of many trying to promulgate the beautiful teachings of Freemasonry . They started a few years ago with about fourteen members , and held their meetings in a back room at a pastry cook ' s shop in Tottenham

Court Road , but by extreme care and assiduity of the Brethren they had become an important Lodge , with 272 members , and felt justifiable pride in watching the progress they had made . The chairman had kindly referred to the teaching in the Lodge , and he could assure those present that it was a matter of extreme pleasure to him to think he was doing work of some importance and that his efforts were appreciated . No better reward could be given or wished for . Other toasts followed and the meeting broke up at a late hour .

Reports Of Meetings.

The speeches were interspersed with some excellent songs and recitations given by Bros . Kirby , Harrison , Lister , Lee , Barnard , and R . C . Sudlow , whose scientific discussion on the Butterfly ' s Flight was greatly enjoyed . Altogether a most enjoyable evening . o o o
