M . for the ensuing year by the out-going occupant of the chair Bro . A . E . Chaplin . Bro . B . Chennell , of Newmarket , gave the charges . A Past Master ' s jewel was presented by the Lodge to Bro . A . E . Chaplin .
YORK LODGE , No . 236 . A MEETING of the members was held at Duncombe Place , York , on the 21 st ult ., when Bro . Dr . Bryson W . M . presided , and there was a good " attendance . Bro . Georg ° Kirby P . M . P . G . D . C . North and East Yorkshire was unanimously elected Treasurer , in succession to the late Bro . Joseph Todd . Bro . F . Sidney Gramshaw , M . D ., S . W . was elected Worshipful Master for
the ensuing year , and Bro . J . Hall was re-elected Tyler . A committee was appointed to audit the accounts of the Lodge , and after other business Major Barstow P . M . kindly presented a portrait of himself to the Lodge .
SILURIAN LODGE , No . 471 . THE annual installation was held at the Masonic Hall , Newport , on Tuesday , 12 th inst . Bro . A . Ernest Jones W . M . occupied the chair , and was supported by Bro . C . R . Lloyd D . P . G . M ., and a large number of Past MastersOffioers , and Brethren .
, The ceremony of installing the W . M .-elect Bro . William Lyndon Moore S . W . was ably performed by the retiring W . M ., and at the conclusion of the work the Brethren adjourned to the Westgate Hotel , for their annual banquet , which was presided over by Bro . Moore , supported by the Mayor Bro . Thomas Goldsworthy and a large number of Brethren .
FRANKLIN LODGE , No . 838 . THE members celebrated the festival of St . John , at Boston , on the 8 th inst . Bro . A . A . Crabtree was installed Worshipful Master for the ensuing year , the installation ceremony being performed by Bro . W . H . Hopkins P . G . Std . I . P . M . The usual banquet took place at the Peacock and Royal Hotel in the evening .

Chaplain of Cornwall , formally presented the Lodge , on behalf of the subscribers , with a handsome pair of pillars to perpetuate the memory of the late Bros . A . B . Cheves and E . J . Worth . The Rev . Brother , in the course of a brief , though eloquent and
impressive address , lightly sketched their careers as Masons and medical men , and at the conclusion solemnly dedicated the columns " in the name of the Great Architect of the Universe , to tho memory of the late Bros . Dr . Alexander Bruce Cheves P . P . G . S . W ., and Dr . Edwin James Worth P . P . G . J . W ., both of the Province of Cornwall . "
Bro . Stephens W . M . responded , and accepted the pillars on behalf of the Lodge . The Brethren then adjourned to the Devon and Cornwall Hotel , where a
capital dinner was provided by Bro . Sneli . The usual Loyal and Masonic toasts were honoured , among others being one feelingly proposed by the Rev . H . W . Millett " To the memory of our departed Brethren , " which was drunk in silence .

Simon Cook was installed into the chair and subsequently invested his Officers . The banquet was afterwards held at the Looe Hotel .

, Bro . James Gardner was raised to the sublime degree of M . M . Tjy the Worshipful Master , assisted by Bro . Geo . W . Belshaw S . W ., who presented and explained the Working Tools to the candidate , and also delivered the historical charge .
An election of Officers for the ensuing year then took place , with the result that Bro . Belshaw was unanimously chosen as W . M .-elect , he being afterwards congratulated by the W . M . upon receiving the solid vote of the
Lodge ; Bro . W . Baron I . P . M . was elected Treasurer , and Bro . James Andrew P . M . P . P . G . S . D . Charity Representative , this being the 21 st time upon which the latter had so received the confidence of the Lodge . During the evening Bro . W . 0 . Wilkinson P . M . mentioned the fact that

at the Provincial meeting recently held at the Technical Schools , Salford , he had lost his Past Master ' s jewel . He wished to give publioity to this incident , as it was probable that the finder , with every desire to return the jewel to the rightful owner , might not have noticed that his name and number of Lodge was inscribed upon it . Great sympathy was evinced by the Brethren on account of Bro . Wilkinson ' s loss , and hopes were expressed that the jewel would shortly be returned to him .
A grant of twenty guineas was made from the Lodge funds to the East Lancashire , Systematic Educational and Benevolent Institution , whioh waa supplemented by a further grant of ten guineas , the proceeds of a Masonic Musical Service held at All Saint's Church , Manchester , on 29 th November last .
Before the business was closed , Bro . James Robinson P . M . Secretary made a personal present to the W . M . of a very beautiful gold jewel , which the donor said was to mark the esteem in which he held their principal Officer . Bro . Whitwam , who was agreeably surprised by the gift , thanked Bro . Robinson in a few very appropriate words .
At the festive board which followed , Loyal and Masonic toasts were relieved by songs , & c , the contributaries being Bros . James Robinson P . M ., R . F . Campbell , J . Sutcliffe S . D . 815 , and Edward Roberts P . M . 1459 . The toast of the newly-raised Brother was proposed by the W . M ., who said that he had had previous opportunities of speaking of Bro . Gardner , and of testifying to his worth , but that evening he was more than convinced that they had got the right man among them .
Bro . Gardner replied , saying that so many good things had been uttered about him that he must really be excused if he began to entertain a good opinion of himself . He would try to justify the confidence whioh the Brethren had placed in him , by making himself a worthy member of the Lodge .
Bro . Baron I . P . M . proposed the health of the Worshipful Master , saying that as this was the last time Bro . Whitwam could be toasted as W . M . of the Lodge , he asked the Brethren to perform the duty in a hearty and enthusiastic manner . The promise which Bro . Whitwam had made upon his accession to the chair , that nothing should be wanting on his part to perform his work satisfactorily , had been fully carried out , for he had been excellent in all he had done .
Bro . Whitwam , in responding , said he did not know whether he ought to speak what he had to say with joy or sorrow , sorrow that he would shortly vacate his position , or joy that in relinquishing the chair he would do so to a worthy successor . As Bro . Baron had said , in adverting to his work , he had endeavoured to perform his duties to the best of his ability , and he could do no more . His most sincere thanks were due to his Officers for the able
and efficient help which they had given him . Although some of them lived long distances away , not one had been absent on a single occasion . The Past Masters had also rendered very valuable assistance , without which he could not have carried on his work . Harmony had prevailed in the Lodge , and the duties devolving upon him had come as a perfect pleasure . Altogether , he had had a very happy year .
Bro . Whitwam then proposed the health of the W . M .-elect , stating that it needed no words from him to commend the name of Bro . Belshaw to them . He was so highly satisfied as to his successor ' s abilities that he was sure his assistance would not be required through lack of ability on his part to perform the work of the coming year .
Bro . Belshaw replied , giving a short sketch of his Masonic experience . He had seen others labour well for the cause , and had felt stimulated by their efforts . There were very great responsibilities attached to the position which he was about to assume , and he could assure his Brethren that he was not unmindful of those responsibilities . He thanked them for their solid vote , and this would also encourage him in his efforts to do the best he could to make his coming term of office a successful one .
ST . KEW LODGE , No . 1222 . THE annual meeting was held on Tuesday , 5 th inst ., at Weston-super-Mare , when Bro . R . J . Dart was installed as W . M . for the en suing year by the D . P . G . M . Bro . R . 0- Else , who was assisted by the I . P . M . There was a large attendance , and the Brethren subsequently dined together .
WAVERLEY LODGE , No . 1322 . THE regular meeting of this Lodge was held at the Queen ' s Arms Hotel , George Street , Ashton-under-Lyne , on Thursday , 31 st ult ., Bro . Samuel Grundy W . M . There was an excellent attendance of members and visitors alike . After the Lodge summons had been read , and the minutes of the former meeting confirmed , a ballot , which was successful , was taken for Mr . Alfred Slater , Mill Manager , Ashton , and he was subsequently initiated into the
mysteries and privileges of antient Freemasonry by the Worshipful Master , the Working Tools being presented and explained by Bro . J . Mercer Jones P . M ., he on this occasion giving them the short way , by special request . We may here emphasize the remarks of Bro . C . R . N . Beswicke-Royds Deputy Provincial Grand Master , who was present and saw the ceremony performed , and who congratulated the W . M . upon the manner in which he had acquitted himself . Although Bro . Grundy ' s initial effort in this direction , it reflected the highest credit upon him , showing as it did signs of careful study .
The few vanishing hours of the old year were spent at the festive board in a hearty and enjoyable manner . Loyal and Masonic toasts were varied by songs , recitations , & c , contributed by Bros . Tom Ogden J . D ., A . B . Wilkinson P . M ., Edward Roberts P . M . 1459 , A . E . Hague 324 and others Bro . Enos Andrew P . M . P . P . G . Org . Cheshire was the accompanist .
The candidate , in responding to the toast of the newly-initiated Brother , said the Brethren must not expect much from him at that stage , as he was still in wonderland . From what he had heard that night he had come to the conclusion that if all who had gone through the degree only acted in accordance with the principles which he had been taught , there would be many better members of society . He sincerely trusted that he might become a good and true Mason , and one of whom they would ultimately be proud .
Bro . Jones P . M . proposed the health of the visitors . He took the opportunity of enumerating them , giving all a very hearty welcome , and inviting them to pay another visit .
