There is also a record of the number of votes for the Masonic Charities held by the various Lodges , etc ., which , independent of votes held by individual members , reach a grand total

On the occasion of a recent meeting of the Porchester Lodge of Mark Masters , held in the Temperance Hall , Newbury , on the 17 th ult , the following resolution , proposed by Past Master S . Kni g ht , and seconded by the W-M ., was carried : —" The Omcers and Brethren of the Porchester

Lodge of Mark Masters , No . 27 , Newbury , desire to place on record their high appreciation of the services rendered to the Queen and Empire by . their highly-esteemed Right

Worshipful Provincial Grand Master Bro . Lord Valefttia , M . P ., and beg respectfully to offer him their very hearty congratulations on his safe return to England . " The Secretary undertook to forward a copy of the resolution to his lordship .

The progress of English Masonry during the nineteenth century is shown by the Freemasons' Calendar and Pocketbook for the year 1901 , just issued . The figures are remarkable , especially during the last quarter of a century , as showing how greatly the Grand Lodge of England has prospered

under the Prince of Wales as Grand Master . In 1800 there were 763 Lodges on the English roll—but many pf these unquestionably existed on paper only , and Bro . Hughan believes the active Lodges could not then have numbered more than 600 . In 1825 there were only 736 ; in 1850 ,

770 ; in 1875 , 1 , 420 ; and m 1900 , 2 , 371 . The Marquess of Ripon resigned the Grand Mastership in 1874 , so that the fourth quarter covers the whole of the period during which the Prince has held the Office . The reduction of numbers during the first quarter was due to the union of the two rival Grand

Lodges , and the arrangement of the Roll under which many dormant Lodges were struck off . " Low water mark " was reached in 1832-3 with 591 Lodges only on the roll . There are now , as shown above , 2 , 371 active Lodges on the Register , of which 498 are Metropolitan , 1 , 371 Provincial , and 502

Colonial and Foreign Lodges . The Prince of Wales became Grand Master of England on 2 nd September 1874 . The first Warrant granted after that event was No . 1515 , and the

last warrant in Grand Lodge Calendar for 1901 is numbered 2834 ( the " Devonian" ) , so that over 1 , 300 Lodges must have been chartered during the interval , or an average of fully fifty per annum . —" Hampshire Independent " .
