P . P . G . D . C . responded , assuring tho brethren of 1993 that the R . W . P . G . M . had the interests of Freemasonry , and particularly of the Lodges iu East Lancashire , at heart , and that he , as well as all the Provincial Officers , would do whatever they could at any time to promote the welfare of such a promising Lodge as the Wolseley . Bro

Roberts concluded by regretting he had not visited the Lodge since its consecration , but assured the brethren that it had been his loss and misfortune—not his fault—and that he would make amends to himself and tho Lodgo by visiting them more frequently in the

future . Tho toast of tho Worshipful Master was next proposed by the I . P . M ., Bro . Hunt , in terms of high commendation . He said that tho high standard assumed by Bro " . nanis in the duties ^ he had already performed was a guarantee that the hononr and dignitv of 1993 were secure in bis hands , and that his reign would be marked

by a steady progress . The unanimity of the election was an augury of tho esteem in which ho was held , and of the undivided and loyal support which all would accord to him during the onsning year . The toast having been drank with enthusiasm unbounded , Bro . McCnlhim sang , with powerful effect , "Hero ' s to his health , " the chorus being

repeated by sixty to seventy stentorian voices , each vieing with the other iu honouring the universally popular Master . Bro . Harris rose to respond , and at longth , silence being restored , said , in tones evidently heartfelt , and with his customary oratorical ability : Worshipful Bro . Hunt , Past Masters , Officers and Brethren , —I trust

you will believe mo when I say that the handsome , magnificent and altogether too ilattoring reception which you havo been so graciously pleased to accord to the toast of my health renders it very difficnlt indeed for me to respond in any adequate measure . But high as the culogium passed upon me undoubtedly has been , and great as is the

position to which by your votes and confidence you have placed uiOj 1 can assni'O yon , without any mental reservation , that they aro not higher , nor greater , than my best wishes and aspirations aro for the prosperity and snecess of the Wolseley Lodge . I am deeply sensible of , and highly appreciate , the great distinction you havo conferred

upon mo , and no one can bo more conscious than myself that , in your generosity , you have far too highly estimated my poor abilities ; my principal apprehension now is that , in the performance of the great , important and onerons dnties appertaining to tho Mastership I may bo found unequal to them . Still , however this may prove , you will

give mo credit for having at heart the promotion of the best interests of this important Lodge . I think you will agree with mo that the position of Worshi pful Master in any Lodge is nofc a bed of roses , nor does it occur to mo that a strong , healthy and sane man wants very often to lie on such a bed , hut there aro times of difficulty ,

of query as to tho right thing to do or tho right way to go ; but I sincerely trust—indeed , I feel sanguine—that , should difficulties , complexities or trials cross my path , even in my case they will nofc prove insuperable , because I am assured that I shall havo tho fraternal aid of the Past Masters of tho Lodgo . Thev will

give me the benefit of their ripe experience , wisdom , counsel and judgment , to eimhlo mo to discharge aright the high functions of my extilted office . But , Brethren , having a vivid remembrance of the high example , calibre , ability , and Masonic culture of the two tried Craftsmen who havo so ably preceded me . T think von will at once

concede tho point with mo that humility rather than self-assertion and arrogance becomes one who has so very recently veoer od snch n high command into his hands . And the Officers of Hie L ^ dge —my Officers—of whom any Master might well be proud , will , I am convinced , do their utmost to keep the Wolseley craft sailing well before

a favourable wind , and , if possible , in smooth waters . Let tis all pledge ourselves to havo a good time and a great record . Above all . let us neither cherish nor foster any piqnes , factions , or dissensions , but work amicabl y in the spirit of love , harmony , and charity ; let , ns encourage each other in what is good and great ; united under the

mystic tie of the badge of innocence and the bond of friendship , seek to exemplif y , in our lives , character and conduct , those great Masonic prit ciples of Brotherly Love , Relief , and Truth . tho toast of the Provincial Officers , and Bro . Arlidge acknowledged the compliment paid to the Visitors . The concert was of a very enjoyable character , an excellent programme having been arranged by Mr . Lancaster . The flute solos by Mr . Arlidge were highly appreciated . It is not bestowing too much praise to say that Mr

Arlidge proved himself a complete master of the instrument , and the variations with which he favoured his listeners were executed with rare facility . Vocal contributions to the programme wero given by

Messrs . Lancaster , Jellicoe , Miles , Bowyer , Holbrook , Tilling , and Beale , and recitations were rendered in good style by Messrs . Westaway and Brickwood . The accompaniments were efficiently played by Mr . R . Sharpe .

M ., said that their first I . P . M . had rendered great service to the Lodge , and he thought it but just that tho Lodgo should present him with a jewel of a special design , in

recognition of his valuable services . Th s was carried unanimously . Bro . Burdett . Contts next stated that the Rev . Bro . Simpson ou a former occasion had presented tho Ladge . with a very elegant album . The Lodge appreciated his valuable services ; he now on behalf of the Lodge thanked their worthy Chaplain for his kindness . Three

candidates were proposed for initiation , and the name of Bro . Burt , P . P . G . J . W . Dorset , was submitted as desiring to become a joiuing member . Hearty good wishes from the Visitors having been tendered , Lodge was closed until October . Tho brethren now , to the nnmberof 170 , sat down to a sumptuous and recherche banqnet and

dessert , provided by Bros . Bertram and Roberts , and superintended by Bro . Woods . The tables were beautifully decorated , while some magnificent flowers were presented to the Lodge by the Baroness Bnrdett-Coutts , which were the themo of general admiration .
