Masonic Mysteries.
MASONIC MYSTERIES .
j T is in consonance with the myaterions secrecy of Freemasonry -L that a stringent regulation Bhould prevent the unenlightened public from ever gazing upon proceasiona of the brethren , clothed with the insignia of the Order , except upon very rare occasions . The curiosity which all mankind inherit from their mother Eve has always been much piqued by the fidelity to their obligations of the
members of a world wide Order , and the fact that , with the exception of one or two instances of doubtful historical value , even woman ' s wit haa failed to pierce the veil , has led some to the dis . respectful conclusion that in reality there ia nothing to conceal . No Mason would contest with them this solution of the difficulty , for he
ia not in a position to suggest any alternative . The Order does not court public discussion in any way , and even keeps very muoh to itself the knowledge of the splendid Benevolent Institutions whioh it maintains at au annual cost of many thousands of pounds , raised by voluntary subscription , and the Centenarv of one of which is to be
celebrated next Thursday at the Albert Hall , with the Prince of Wales in the chair . But ia different countries and at different times it ia regarded sometimes with suspicion , sometimes with scoffin » . Of the former feeling there can happily be nothing in this country at the present time , and with regard to the latter the brethren may be
allowed to take such an opportunity as presented itself on the 1 st inst ., of showing that they have no reason to be a 8 hamed of their association with the Order , whose watchwords , as the guests at the luncheon were told , are " charity and loyalty . " It haa been the immemorial custom of Freemasons to take formal part in the erection
of important public buildings and the like , and we believe we are entitled to say that the ceremony which they performed in College Green impreased all the citizens who were present to witness it with a sense of solemnity and dignity . In addressing bis guests in the afternoon Bro . W . A . F . Powell , the veteran , who haa
beeu the actual ruler of the Freemasons of Bristol for the long period of thirty . four years , prided himaelf upon the perfect order and regnlarity of the proceedings . This , without doubt , gained the admira - tion he claimed for it , but we believe that in addition many of the oulookers were couviaced that there is something real and ennobling
in Freemasonry , that it appeals to the better part of human nature and that it ia a power for good in the world . It will probably be many years before the Order makes another public appearance in
Bristol , but if what we have said be well founded , it has no reason to regret the part it played on this occasion , and we believe the proceedinga will be regarded aa satiafactory by all who were concerned in them . —Bristol Mercury .
De Witt Clinton had this to say to the cranks of hia day of onr grand old institution : "I know that Freemasonry , properly under , stood aud faithfully attended to , is friendly to religion , morality , liberty and good government , and I shall never shrink under anv atate of excitement or any extent of misapprehention , from bearing
testimony in favour of the purity of an institution which can boast of a Washington , a Franklin aud a Lafayette as distinguished members and which inculcates no principles and authorises no acts that are not in perfect accordance with good morals , civil liberty and entire obedience to government and the laws .
A CAED . —AN IMPORTANT DISCOVERY is announced in the " Paris Figaro , " of a valuable remedy for uervous debility , physical exhaustion , aud kindred complaints . This discovery was made b y a missionary in Old Mexico ; it saved him from a miserable existence
and premature decay . The Eev . Joseph Holmes , Bloomsbury Mansions , Bloomsbury Square , Loudon , W . C , will send they prescription , free of charge , on recei pt of a self-addreased ' stamped envelope . Mention this paper .
