rpUE fame of Colchester as a place of iuterest for students is , we J- are glad to say , extending , and we trust may continue to do so . On Saturday , 2 nd inst ., some 16 members of the above Lodge paid a visit to Colchester for the purpose of inspecting tho valuable antiquarian relics , the party including Bros . George Harry Piper D . P . G . M . Hereford , R . F . Gould , G . W . Speth the indefatigable

Seoretarj of the Lodge , & o . At Colchester Station the party were received by Bro . T . J . Railing Provincial Grand Secretary Essex , and conducted in Mr . Poole's brake to the Caps Hotel . A move was at once made to the C- < st ! e , whore the visitors were introduced to Bro . Henry Laver , M . lt . C . ^ ., F . L . S ., who had kindly undertaken to act as chaperone , Bro . F . C . 11 . Jones W . M . 51 , and Bro . Harnold

Francis W . M . eleot 51 . The Castle and Museum were thoroughly inspected , Dr . Laver pouuinu out the moat interesting features of eaoh , and answering tbe inquiries of hia auditory with readiness and courtesy . Lunoheon followed at the Cups Hotel , and the afternoon programme comprised visits to St . Botolph ' s Priory , St . Giles ' Church , St . John ' s Abbey Gatp , Uoly Trinity Church , the Balkan

Gate , and , finally , Mr . George . lutein ' s museum , whioh was kindly thrown opon to the visitors . At each place the brethren evinced the deepest interest in all they saw and in Dr . Laver ' a lucid remarks thereupon . Before leaving Mr . Joslin ' s he was heartily thanked by the brethren for his courtesy in allowing them to see his valuable and intereeting collection , and Bro . Gould also conveyed to Brother

Laver their moat grateful thanks for the pains he had taken to make their visit such a pleaaant and instructive one . Tea having been partaken of at the Cups Hotel , the brake waB once more called into requisition , and a saloon on the 6 ' 47 conveyed the viaitors back to town . Before leaving , they expressed themselves as most delighted with their visit .

ROYAL MASONIC INSTITUTION FOR BOYS .

THE Quarterly Court of Subscribers to tho nbove Institution , was held on the 8 th inst ., at Freemasons ' Hall , Bro ^ C . E . Keyser Grand Deacon in the ohair . There being nothing but formal business on the agenda paper the attendance of tho brethren was small , but it

included Bros . Scurrah , Fairchild , Cumberland , Brett , Adamson , James Terry , J . G . Stevens , Bolton , C . H . Webb , Masters , H . Massey , Pulman , G . E . Lake , W . Russell , and tbe Secretary of the Institntion ( Bro . J . M . McLeod ) . After the minntes had been read the Chairman stated that a

reference was made in them to the great exertions of Bro . McLeod for the success of tho last Festival of the Institntion . That Festival produced £ 13 , 000 , which , considering tbe heavy drain on the pockets of the brethren by the extraordinary collection at the Royal Masonic

Benevolent Institution Jubilee Festival , was qnite unexpected , and he thought that some more formal acknowledgment of Bro . McLeod ' s efforts on behalf of the School than that in the minutes should be made . The brethren agreed in the remarks of the Chairman , and Brother McLeod

thanking them , said he had been only too pleased to throw all his efforts into tho promotion of tho success of the Festival , and it would always be his endeavour to do his best for the Institution . Bro . W . Masters , for Bro . George Everett P . G . Treasurer ,

moved" That the Board of Management be authorised to fill up additional vacancies that have occurred in tho School by admitting two of tho unsuccessful candidates at tho election of Friday , 8 th April last , who were next on tho Poll . " The motion , which was seconded by Bro . Cumberland ,

was adopted . On the motion of Bro . Scurrah , seconded by Bro . C . Pulman , the Court settled tho list of candidates for tho October election at 38 , and declared vacancies for

24 boys . Bro . Cumberland afterwards gave notice of motion for the Quarterly Court of 14 th October to alter Rule 48 by fixing the monthly meeting of Council for five o ' clock p . m . on tho first Friday in each mouth , September

excepted , instead of the first Saturday at three o ' clock , stating that business in London now closing at two o ' c ! ock on Saturday afternoon it was inconvenient for the brethren to remain ia town . The usual compliment to the Chairman concluded the meeting .

The residents of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , Croydon , were recently invited by Dr . Strong to hia house at Worthing , a special saloon carriage being

provided for them . They wero treated most hospitality by Dr . Strong , and with carriage drives and entertainment on the pier , spent a very enjoyable day , arriving home at East Croydon about eight o ' clock .

The German Emperor has contributed 5 , 000 marks to the fund for the erection of a hall for the Faithful Heart Lodge , in Strasburg . The members of this Lodge havo always zealously endeavoured to establish good relations between the native Alsatian and the German immigrants into that Province .

rlic credit of the Craft has been enhanced by the preferment obtained by Bro . John Hutton , who is chosen to succeed Lord Kosehery as Chairman of the London County Council . Brp . Hutton is a young man—only just turned fifty—but his rise in municip : il life has been rapid .

Previous to his election to tho first council as a Progressive for South St . Paneras he had but little experience , having neither served on a Vestry , Board of Guardians or Board of Works . Ho was formally editor and proprietor of The

Weekly limes , past proprietor of The Sporting Life , and the owner of the popular and useful ABC Railway guide for over twenty yearp . He is an earnest advocate of temperance , and is a member of tho Reform , the National Liberal , and the Devonshire Clubs .

Bro . Buohan , Secretary of the Duke of Edinburgh Lodge , announces that the Lodge has removed from the Cape of Good Hope Tavern , Commercial Road , to the Eastern Hotol Tavern , Commercial Roarl , Limehoiiae . Its meetings are held on the first Toesdays in February , Mnrch , April , May , October , November , and December . Lodgo of Instruction meetings are held every Thursday evening , at 7 . 30 p . m ., at the Eastern Hotel , Commercial Road , Limehonse .

Tho members of the Tloynl Lancashire , No . 116 , Colne . and Qneen ' s Jubilee , No . 2193 , Nelson , Lodges , had their annual joint excursion on Monday , the 27 th ult ., the place selected for tbe day ' a enjoyment being Chester . The party loft lor their destination by saloon cairincrex , und on their arrival at tho city they visited tho various places of interest in tho locality , including the cathedral , tho cnstle mid Eaton Hall ( tlio magnificent residence of the Duke of Westminster ) . Tbe onting was greatly enjoyed .
