West Lancashire Lodge , No . 65 . INSTALLATION OF BROTHER F . JENKINS . THE annual meeting was held on Wednesday , 6 th inst ' ., at the Masonic Hall , Hope Street , Liverpool , where there was an
attendance of about sixty Brethren , including several representatives of eminence in the Degree . Bro . J . S . Buck P . G . S ., the retiring chief , installed Bro . F . Jenkins as Worshipful Master for the ensuing year . ********** ARK MARINERS .
— : o : — United Service Lodge , No . 69 . INSTALLATION OF BRO . JNO . R . MORGAN . A VERY pleasing and interesting ceremony took place at the Masonic Temple , New Brompton , on Monday , 2 nd inst ., when Bro . Jno . R . Morgan was very ably enthroned into the Noah's chair of the above Lodge by Bro . E . B . Wilks , of Gordon Lodge , No . 3 64 , Gravescnd , assisted by Bros . J . Percy White 3 64 , and Lawrence Salt sen ., of Dewar Lodge , Rochester .
Bro . Morgan appointed as his Officers for the ensuing year the following Brethren : Chas . Woodger I . P . C . N ., Lieut . Elias Lake , R . N ., J ., James Kearney S ., Fredk . Pott Treasurer , Samuel W . Hurst Scribe , J . D . Hull S . D ., Wm . Hughes J . D ., Wm . Jenkins Organist , Walter Corbett D . C , Horace G . Croneen Gdn ., Fredk . Lucas Steward , Joshua Heath Warder .
After the investiture of Officers , and the Lodge having been closed , the Brethren adjourned to the " Ghuznee Fort" Hotel ( Bro . F . Pott ) , where a banquet awaited them , and which was done justice to in a truly Masonic manner . The usual toasts were given and honoured , that of the W . C . Noah being in the hands of Brother Wilks , who said the usual nice things in a very kindly way .
The W . C . Noah replied , thanking the- Installing Noah and Bro . J . Percy White very much for their kindness in coming all the " way from Gravesend , in the fog , to perform and assist in the ceremony ; also Bro . L . Salt , for his kindness in attending . Harmony was rendered during the evening by several of the Brethren , the LP . C . Noah excelling himself on this occasion .
****************** A FAMOUS CITY RESTAURANT . DESPITE the glories of many of the recently erected places of public entertainment in the city of London , there is an attraction about the older restaurants , for those who have known them perhaps during the whole of their business career , which goes far
to counteract any special advantages the modern palaces may seem to offer ; and it is not surprising to find the older favourites well maintaining their position , despite the competition so keenly offered by younger establishments . Call it sentiment , if you will , but a chop or a steak at such an establishment as Mullen ' s Restaurant , in Ironmonger Lane , Cheapside , seems to be quite a different article to what we get at one of the newer establishments . We
remember having enjoyed a meal at the older restaurant during our earlier experiences in the city , when , as we well recollect , one feature in the daily routine was to endeavour to find a new place for the midday meal and compare notes as to what position it . occupied among its fellows . Vv e used to regard Mullen ' s as being in the foremost ranks then , and a recent visit to it convinced us it is still to the fore .
We found our worthy Brother Frederick Harris had had the place thoroughly overhauled and re-decorated , and it now appears equal to any of its competitors in so far as appearances go , while , in addition , it possesses attractions particularly its own , foremost among them being the fact that Bro . Harris has had the best of training , and brings with him experience that should stand him in
good stead m the conduct of his present establishment . One of the features of Brother Harris's management of Simpson ' s , in Cheapside , was a series of dinners and concerts , and knowing their popularity he has wisely started a similar course at Mullen's Restaurant . The first of these took place on Monday , 28 th ult ., and really took the form of a house warming , being well attended
by patrons of the establishment and friends of the proprietor . Mr . Percival Ussher was in the chair and a very enjoyable evening resulted . An excellent dinner was followed by a charming musical programme , the contributors including such well known artistes as Mr . R . T . Wood , Mr . John M . Hay , Miss Annie Ruscoe , Mr . H . M . Hemsley , Miss Grainger Kerr , Mr . Charles King , Mr . Sydney
Hunt , Mr . E . J . Odell , Mr . Wilson James , Dr . F . Byrd-Page , Mr . Charles Lidbury , and Master J . Goldwater . The accompanist was Mr . F . G . Cole , F . R . C . O ., and the concert was under the direction of Mr . W . A . Curnoch . During the evening the loyal toasts were duly honoured , while that of " The Host" was submitted in a eulogistic speech from the chair , and suitably acknowledged .
1 he menu and musical programme of the evening were the original design of Bro . Harris , who is to be heartily congratulated on the result of this early effort to entertain and amuse his patrons , his dinner was excellent , and well served , and might certainly have been taken as a pattern by some of the west-end establishments which assume to themselves so much superiority over the city restaurants . We were pleased to notice several well known Masons among the large company present .
********** -s ******* New Palace Steamers , Ltd —It is announced that a dividend of 7 ^ per cent , will be distributed among the shareholders of this Company , as the result of last season's working , and we may congratulate Mr . T . E . Barlow , the energetic and courteous manager , upon this successful issue of his efforts .
