rriHERE is not a greafc deal of Masonic law in the United JL States bearing npon the status of a Lodge in the position of Hiram Lodge of New Haven , Connecticut . There is a general sentiment , founded upon Fraternity and good will , which recommends all Lodges within a given

territorial jurisdiction , upon the constitution in such territory of a Grand Lodge , to unite their life and fortunes with the now Grand Lodge , for the presumably better

administration of Masonic affairs , and to the end that there may be a permanent unification oi * Masonic work , and jurisdiction and purpose .

More or less reluctance is often felt in Lodges to sink their ancient life and freedom in a Grand Lodge which shall have immediate supervision and authority over them . This is no more than a fair exhibition of that human

nature which belongs to men associated as well as to individuals . It is a sentiment which yields to the assurance of greater good , and has , in the States , very generally yielded , after a greater or less delay . There are but few

exceptions , and Hiram Lodge , by a singular concurrence of circumstances , stands in this exceptional position : —that is to say , in relations of Masonic law and right , of Masonic honour and courtesy , which are new and seem to require some new Masonic legislation .

We suggest that the relations are new , because they have not been specifically recognised and treated as such , and that they require new legislation because the rules which have beon pronounced , rather than legislated , have been made .

seemingly , from a different standpoint , and do uot cover the issues now for the first time raised , and brought distinctly into view . Again , they are new , because they involve principles of Masonic law which must be regarded as well

established , and which do nob get their lawful execution and influence , except by a modification of other rules and principles which have been pronounced for cases in which these relations were nofc involved . They have not as yet

had hearing , and to put them down by the mere will and ipse dixit of Grand Lodges , is to make might take the place of right , and to use the bludgeon of barbarism and the tyranny of power , rather than the temperateness of Fraternity , and the justice which comes of wise discussion . To understand the crass and incomplete condition of Masonic law relative to Graud Lodges in the various
