CONMITTEE MEETING OF THE BENEVOLENT INSTITUTION .

THE regular meeting of the Committee of tho Eoyal Masonic Benevolent Institution was held on Wednesday afternoon afc Freemasons' Hall . There were present Bros . Lieuc .-Col . Creaton , Grand Treasnrer , Vice-Patron , and Trustee ( in tho chair ) , James Brett , C G . Dilley , J . M . Case , William Clarke , John G . Stevens , Henry G . Warren , J . A . Farnfield , Thomas Cubitt , S . Eawson , William

Stephens , Charles Atkins , William Hilton , 0 . H . Webb , and James Terry Secretary . The minutes having been read and confirmed , Bro . Terry reported tho death of three annuitants and a female candidate for tho Annuity Fund . After tho reading of tho report of tho Warden , the report of the Financial Committee was read , which showed a balance of £ 4023 Is to the credit of tho Male Fund ,

£ 2035 3 s 8 d to the credit of the Female Fund , and £ 16 19 s lid to the credit of the Sustentation Fund . In conclusion , the Finance Committee recommended thafc £ 1000 should be taken from tho Male Fund to purchase Consols . It was then resolved , on the motion of Bro . J . M . Case , seconded by Bro . J . A . Farnfield , to invest £ 1000 in Consols . Bros . Col . Creaton , J . A . Farnfield , and W . Hale wero elected the

Committee to draw up tho annual report . The brethren then granted a widow ' s petition to be allowed her lato husband ' s annuity . Ifc was also resolved to place £ 3000 on deposit at interest . Bro . H . G . Warren gave notice of motion thafc the premium for the collector's cuaranteo should be paid out of tho funds of tho Institution . Tho Committee then adjourned .

THE number of Lodges of Mark Masons in the Province of Berks and Oxon received an addition on Monday last , when tho Jersey Lodgo , No . 257 , designated in honour of the Provincial Grand Master , was consecrated at Maidenhead by tho Grand Assistant Secretary of the Order , Bro . Don . M . Dewar , in tho absence of tho Earl of Jersey , who up to the last moment was expected to havo attended . The interesting event attracted brethren from Eeading , London , and

elsewhere , who assembled afc the Literary Institution , the Town Hall being in course of rebuilding . Among the brethren present in tho Lodge , which was opened at 1 o ' clock by tho Deputy Provincial Grand Master ( Bro . Charles Stephens , of Eeading ) , we observed Bros , the Eev . Theodore H . Janson , E . Margrott , G . S . Oonsins G . Organist , Pulley Prov . G . Sec , Cooper Smith Prov . Grand Senior

The " first bnsiness was to take the ballot for thirteen brethren proposed as members of the Lodge , and theso wero elected unanimously , as

The new Lodge was then consecrated in an impressive and befitting manner , the choral portion of the ceremony being well sustained by Bros . Cousins , Pulley , and Hickie . Then followed tbe installation of Bro . Farr P . M . Copostono Lodge , No . 80 , P . D . G . W . Bengal , as Worshipful Master of the Lodgo for the ensuing year , and

Her Majesty has been pleased to summon William Archer Amherst , Viscount Holmesdale , to the Upper House , by tho title of Baron Amherst of Montreal . His Lordship , who has held tho office of Provincial Grand Master of Kent since 1860 , and that of G . Superintendent of tho same Province

since 1877 , is the eldest son of the second Earl of Amherst , by Gertrude , daughter of the lato Hon . and Right Rev . Dr . Percy , Bishop of Carlisle . He was born in 1836 , was educated at Eton , entered the Coldstream Guards in 1854 , and served in the Eastern campaign in tho same year , being

present at tho battles of Balaklava and Inkerman , and at the siege of Sebastopol , where he was severely wounded . He became lieutenant and captain in 1855 , and retired from the service in 1862 , in which year he married Lady Julia ,

only daughter of the last Earl of Cornwallis . From May 1859 until November 1868 ho represented West Kent in the House of Commons in tho Conservative interest , and from the latter date until the end of tho last Parliament ho sat for Mid Kent .

Our attention has been drawn to tho great inconvenience which attends the holding of the business meetings of tho Courts of the Masonic Institutions in tho same room where preparations for the election are in progress . We think that a small matter like this has only to be pointed out to

ensure its being altered ; it would be very easy for the business to be transacted in the usual Board room , and as as soon as that was completed for the chairman to adjourn to the large hall ( or such other place as may from timo to

time be decided upon ) to proceed with the poll . The noises in a large room and the conversations of those engaged in the work of securing votes renders it very unpleasant for thoso whose object is to explain or listen to any remarks that are made on the various subjects brought under notice .

The City Masonic Benevolent Association having terminated by effluxion of time , and having during its existence been instrumental in paying nearly £ 900 to the three Masonic Institutions , it was considered very desirable that a new ono should bo formed ; and to carry out this idea a

meeting was held at tho Railway Tavern , Fenchurch-street , on Monday , 22 nd March , when the President , Treasurer , Secretary , and Committee of the new Association were duly elected , many members were enrolled , and thero being sufficient funds subscribed , a ballot for a Life Governorship

was declared , which resulted favourably for Bro . Norden W . M . Israel Lodge . The objects of this Association are to obtain Life Governorships for its members in either of the Masonic Institutions , by a weekly payment of Is , payable

on the fourth Monday in each month . Tho next meeting will take place on Monday , the 26 th April , at the Railway Tavern , Fenchurch-street , at which place all brethreu desirous of joining are earnestly invited to attend .

Of the other brethren whom we named last week as candidates for the new Parliament , Sir Geo . Elliot , Bart ., P . G . M . South Wales ( West Division ) has failed to secure re-election . The Right Hon . Colonel Stanley , Deputy P . G . Master West Lancashire , has been returned at the

head of the poll for his division of the county . Bro . J . W . Ellison Macartney is once again a member for county Tyrone . Hon . W . Egerton , who is P . G . M . M . M . for North Wales and Cheshire , is returned for Mid Cheshire , and Bro . Maxwell Close , whose candidature was unnoticedj is again M . P . for county Armagh .

Eboracum Royal Arch . Chapter , No . 1611 . —The regular meeting of this Chapter was held on Tuesday , the 6 th inst ., at York , when , in the unavoidable absence of Comp . T . B . Whytehead Z ., Comp . J . Todd P . Z . presided , with Comp . J . S . Cnmberland H ., and Comp . G . Balmford J . There was no bnsiness done beyond the reading of the minutes , and several exaltations were postponed , in consequence of the many political claims upon the attention of the members .
