PUBLISHED RITUALS .
FROM a very interesting " History of Freemasonry in Western India , " now appearing in the " Indian Freemason , we learn that in 1865 the then District Grand Master of Bombay ( Bro . George Taylor ) , in the course of
an address to the members of his District Grand Lodge , stated " he had perused a book of Masonic Ritual published in Bombay , and that in his opinion it appeared to . be but a
reproduction of Claret ' s work , whose book was not found fault with . " This appears to have attracted the attention of the Home authorities , who promptly addressed him on the subject , in the following terms :
Freemasons' Hall , London , 27 th June 1865 . The Colonial Board wish to impress upon you the necessity of discouraging by every means in your power the use of any so-called Ritual . No publication purporting to
vive any portion of the ceremonies is in the slightest degree sanctioned , or in the most indirect manner ever has received any sanction from the Grand Lodge , or any of its Boards or Committees . The severest penalties would be visited uoon
any Brother found guilty of selling such works . Your observation that Claret ' s book was " not found fault with " is calculated to do much harm and to lead to a belief entirely at variance with fact
( Signed ) W . GRAY CLARKE , G . S . " Looking at Sir Michael Hicks-Beach , and , still more , listening to him , with his intellect in its fullest vigour and his powers of incisive debate apparently growing session by session , it is difficult ( says a writer in the " Outlook" ) to
realise that the Chancellor of the Exchequer has been in the thick of the Parliamentary fight for thirty-eight years , sparing neither himself nor any other man . Some of us can remember his brilliant , though short , leadership of the House , until a temporary breakdown of his eyesight threw him ' * out
of the running . In Parliament there is no standing still . A man either goes forward or backward ; but it is useless speculating what Cabinet position Sir Michael might not have held now save far the untoward collapse in question . This , however , may be said without challenge—that of the
entire six hundred and seventy members who compose the House' there is not one who holds higher place in the estimation of his fellows than the new " Father . ' [ We may add that his work as Provincial Grand Master of Gloucestershire has secured him an equally high place in the estimation of the Freemasons of England . —ED . F . C . J .
