GRAND LODGE OF CANADA .

AT two o ' clock on the afternoon of Wednesday , 17 th July , the Grand Lodge of Canada in the Province of Ontario was convened at Hamilton , the Court Room being used for the purpose .

The Committee on credentials reported 3 62 warranted Lodges on the roll and 843 delegates , representing a total vote of 1 , 444 . The address of the Grand Master M . W . . Bro . R . B . Hungerfoxd covered in a comprehensive manner the events

of the Craft life of the jurisdiction for the past year . His first paragraph was a loving reference to the nation ' s loss in the death of their Queen , and this was followed by the reading of the following message winch at midnight had been cabled to H . R . H . the Duke .. of Connaught the new Grand Master of English Masons :

" The Grand Lodge of Canada , in session assembled , on behalf of thirty thousand Freemasons and British subjects , congratulates the Mother Grand Lodge of the world on the installation of a worthy successor to the great Craft ruler who has passed from your Grand East to the throne of a united Empire . "

The Grand Master stated that he had deputed Bro . G . J . Bennett , of Toronto , a Past District Deputy Grand Master , to represent the Grand Lodge of Canada at the installation , and later read the following reply which had been received from the Grand Secretary of England Bro . Edward Letchworth :

"His Royal Highness and Grand Lodge received congratulations of Grand Lodge of Canada with greatest satistaction and most heartily reciprocate good wishes . " The Grand Master then referred to the Masonic situation in Quebec , expressing the hope that St . George and St .

Paul Lodges would soon follow the example ot St . Lawrence , in affiliating with the Grand Lodge of that Province . A pointed paragraph of the address referred to the Royal Solomon Mother Lodge , No . 293 , J erusalem , falestine , a Lodge which had been warranted by Bro . Mercer Wilson , in

1873 . 1 ' source of the Grand Masters information was not disclosed , but it is understood that irregularities in connection with this Lodge have been , going on for years , but have only recently been brought to his notice , "there is a

strong feeling amongst the membership that a Lodge so far distant from , the parent jurisdiction is beyond the possibility of proper supervision , ' the Grand Master recommended the withdrawal of the Warrant , and action to that effect was taken by the Board of General Purposes .

The Grand Master further advised that the districts of the Grand Lodge be revised , and concluded his address by recommending the recognition of the Grand Lodges of Western Australia and Porto Rico , and the postponement until the receipt of further information of the recognition of the Grand Lodge of Costa Rica .

The reports of the various Committees of the Board showed the jurisdiction to be flourishing . Benevolence to the extent or $ 2 , 500 had been distributed during the year and Warrants were issued to a number of new Lodges . The

Grand Secretary ' s report showed the year ' s receipts to have been $ 23 , 499 , and the Grand Treasurer reported a balance oni 3 rd July 1901 of $ 13 , 348 . The balance sheet showed investments amounting to $ 85 , 000 which , with the balance quoted , made a total of $ 98 , 348 .

the honorary rank of Past Grand Registrar was conferred upon Bro . Alexander Patterson , who has been identified with the work of Masonic relief for the past thirty years . At the previous communication of the Grand Lodge and during his absence in Europe , Bro . J . Ross Robertson had been appointed Historian ot the Grand Lodge .

He expressed his appreciation of the honour in fitting terms .

The election of Officers resulted as follows : —Bros . R . B . Hungerford Grand Master ( re-elected ) , J . E . Harding Deputy Grand Master ( re-elected ) , McAllister , of Hamilton , Senior Grand Warden , A . Dyment , M . D ., of Thessalon ,

Junior Grand Warden , J . J . Mason Grand Secretary ( reelected ) , Hugh Murray Grand Treasurer ( re-elected ) , James O'Hara Grand Registrar , Rev . Von Pirch , of Berlin , Grand Chaplain . The Grand Lodge will meet next year in Windsor , opposite Detroit , Michigan ,

Grand Lodge Of Canada.

The Grand Sharri Pephlit is not the title of an Oriental potentate or dignitary , but the name of a queer sort of Masonic Brotherhood which once practised its mystic rites in a secluded " temple" at Thornton Heath , but is now fallen defunct . The head of the thing , a builder and

contractor , and the " Grand Registrar , " formerly a pawnbroker ' s assistant , were yesterday unsuccessfully sued in the King ' s Bench for the amount of a printer ' s bill , and some quaint details of the practices and observances of the society came out in evidence . It appeared that the high-sounding officials

were wont to array themselves m gorgeous apparel ; that there was put into type a description of a visit by the " Council" to the Shakespeare country , which was written by a child , and carefully recorded " what pa did" during the excursion ; and that Brethren attending the wedding of one

of the Lodge were instructed to " robe in the train , ' and to refrain from throwing rice , as each would be supplied with " a temple slipper . " It was hinted that there was a sick

fund in connection with the Order , and Mr . Justice Darling , after reading a certain menu , specifying nine kinds of wine , said he thought that was a very necessary provision . — " Daily Telegraph , " loth August 1901 .

********** Mr . Joseph Warwick , the President of the Co-operative Congress at Middlesbrough , gave an address which was listened to with great interest , in which he compared Cooperation with Freemasonry . The true Brotherhood which

is the outcome of both Freemasonry and Co-operation , and which " enables a comrade in need to feel that he can apply to a member of either body without the fear of being thought

an impostor , is one of the best features of both movements . Mr .-Warwick said that Co-operation was a great religion , more distinctive than Freemasonry , which was hampered with ceremonies .
