Reports Of Meetings.

applause of the assemblage , and a vote of thanks was accorded to him by tho Lodge . Bro . Arthur Ronaldson was re-appointed Charity Representative of the Lodge . After discussion , the sum of five guineas was voted from the funds toward * the fund for the restoration of the Chapter House at Canterbury Cathedral , whioh is being raised by the Provincial Grand Master Earl Amherst , who has contributed £ 100 .

Bro . Hawker , in feeling terms , presented a handsome Past Master ' s jewel and collar to the I . P . M ., in the name of the Lodge . Bro . Forss suitably leturned thanks , and said that if he had given satisfaction to the Brethren he w » s more than repaid . ___ ,,

Three candidate * wore proposed for initiation at the next meeting . The Secretary read various letters of apology for absence , and there being no further business the Lodge was closed in due form , and the Brethren adjourned to the banquet room , where a choice repast was served by Bro . A . J . Baldock . The beautiful floral decorations were sent by Bro . C . Matthews

the S . W . At the termination of the banquet the usual Loyal and Masonic toasts were given from the chair , and duly drunk by those present , Bros . Augustus Jackson , Frank Hitchens , and H . Doughty responding for the Prov . Grand Officers .

In cordial and well-ohosen words the I . P . M . Bro . Forss proposed the health of the Worshipful Master , who , he said , would be certain to be punctual in his attendance , and as he was well acquainted with the ritual they might be sure they would have a thoroughly good Master . He had an efficient set of Officers , so ought to have a successful year of office .

Bro . Hawker , who was received with acclamation , acknowledged the compliment . He said he was very proud of the position to which the Brethren had elected him , and he would do his best to follow in the footsteps of his predecessors , so that the Lodge would maintain its foremost rank in the Province .

An extraordinary interest attached to the W . M . ' s toast of the Installing Master , in consequence of an unexpected denouement . Bro . Hawker said that all present knew his admirable working of the ritual , and his zeal in everything he undertook . As Preceptor of the Lodge of Instruction they were deeply indebted to him , and it was now his pleasing duty to ask his acceptance of a trifling mark of their esteem and regard . The trifling mark was a massive 18 carat gold watch chain , with a Past Master ' s jewel in miniature attached . The toast was received wifch great enthusiasm and

musical honours . Bro . Forss , who spoke with considerable emotion , briefly returned thanks . He said as a rule it took many years to work up fco W . M ., but he had joined at a critical time in the history of the Lodge , and had striven hard to promote its interests . He certainly never dreamed that he should

be the recipient of such valuable gifts ; they would act as an incentive to redouble his energies for the benefit of the Lodgo , which was rapidly taking its place among the first in the Province , and had made such progress that other Lodges would try to emulate it . He heartily thanked them for their kindness , and hoped he might long be spared to be among them .

Bros . Doughty , father of the Lodge , Haywood , Beamish , and Hogg replied for the Past Masters . Several other toasts followed , in which nearly everybody ' s health was proposed and drank , but we can only say generally that hearty good fellowship prevailed and all agreed that they spent a most enjoyable vening .

During the evening an agreeable programme was given under the direction of Bro . J . 0 . Aylen , in which Miss F . Lovell , Miss Bessie Forss , Bros . J . Black , H . Drake , E . Ingman , Mr . Wild , Mr . Blackmore , and Mr . Austin Forss took part .

Bro . William Hawker , the new Master , was born at Kingsland , London , on 27 th July 1850 , and was initiated into Freemasonry in the Sympathy Lodge , in March 1891 , so his rise in the Craft has been rapid . He has served nearly all the offices in the Lodge , with considerable ability , being an

assiduous attendant at the Lodge of Instruction . He was one of the Founders of the Sympathy Chapter , in whioh he is Assist . S ., and is also a Companion of the High Cross Chapter , at Dartford . Bro . Hawker has proved his practical sympathy with Freemasonry by making himself a Life Governor of each of the three Masonic Charities .

PORTLAND LODGE , No . 637 . A MEETING was held on Thursday , 1 st inst ., at the Lodge room , Town Hall , Stoke , when Bro . Edward Harding was installed as W . M ., in the presence of upwards of ninety Brethren . The ceremony was performed by Bro . E . Alsop the retiring W . M .

After the business of the Lodge was concluded the Brethren adjourned to the Copeland Arms , where an excellent banquet was provided by Mrs . Raynes . The usual toasts wero given and some very good music supplied by the Brethren .

DERWENT LODGE , No . 884 . THE installation of W . M . took place on Monday , 12 th inst ., in the Town Hall , Wirksworth , the W . M .-elect being Bro . Rev . S . Curling Hayward and the Installing Master Brother J . M . McLeod P . M . 884 P . P S . G . W . P . G . S . B ., & c
