THE BOYS SCHOOL .

THE Quarterly Court of this Institution was held on Friday of last week , afc Freemasons' Tavern , under the presidency of Bro . W . W . B . Beach , M . P ., Provincial Grand Master Hampshire and Isle of Wight . Bro . Richard Eve P . G . Treas . Chairman of the Board of Management laid before the meeting a decision come to by the

Board for purchasing some sixty-eight acres at Bushey , Herts , for £ 13 , 000 , on which to build a larger and more commodious school than the existing establishment afc Wood Green , and stated that £ 650 had been paid by way of deposit . The Board , however , had arranged that if the purchase should not be

completed £ 450 was to be returned . A long and animated discussion ensued , some Brethren complaining that the Subscribers had not been taken into the confidence of the Board . Ultimately , however , a resolution was carried approving of the action the Board had taken for the removal of the School , only nine hands being held up against it .

The Brethren then proceeded to the half yearly election . There were vacancies for fourteen boys , but in view of the fact that two of the candidates tied for the final place , with 3 , 282 votes each , the Quarterly Court recommended fche Board of Management to admit both boys at the earliest opportunity , and as a consequence , fifteen were declared elected . We regret the

criticism we have lately felt ourselves compelled to offer , in regard to the new site of the Institution , has , apparently , so far affected the officials that they have thought it desirable to " boycott" us by withholding the usual advertisement of the result , implying , we imagine , that we are to be bought for the few shillings the Institution has hitherto spent in this direction .

We hope the saving will do the Institution much good , but ifc will require thousands of such " economies " to make up for the vast sum to be wasted under fche new scheme . The successful candidates and particulars of the voting were as follow , the information being given in this column as our readers may be interested in the result , and should not suffer from our expressions of opinion :

MASONRY AT MONTREAL .

THE following letter appeared in a recent issue of fche " Tablet" ; SIE , —We read in the " Freemason , " 15 th August 1896 : " We heard of casos in which a defendant , who knew the presiding judge or magistrate was a Mason , made it known to the latter , that he , too , was a member of the Brotherhood , with the result that he received a double dose of punishment ,

the judge considering that the fact of the defendant being a Mason was an aggravation of the offence with which he was charged . " Now , if the " Freemason" had said " The defendant received a second dose for the contempt of Court implied in his Masonic confession , " we might let iu pass , but is it consonant with justice and English jurisprudence , if a Catholic , a

Methodist , a Presbyterian , an Anglican , or a Masonic judge , inflicts a double punishment on one of his co-religionists or Brothers ? Is there no danger that the English Courts of Justice may be changed into pulpits , from which some magistrates or judges may preach the superiority of their own Church or Brotherhood , a superiority implied in the double dose of punishment aforesaid . Yours , L . FOUQDET , O . M . I .

The installation meeting of the Lancastrian Lodge , No . 2528 was held on Wednesday , at the Frascati , when Bro . J . J . Marsh was re-inscalled as Worshipful Master . We shall give a report of the proceedings next week . o o o The " Inaugural" supper arranged by the Egyptian Lodge

of Instruction , No . 27 , to take place at the Duval Eesbaurant ( late Salutation Taveru ) , Newgate Street , is fixed for Tuesday next , 20 th inst ., to commence at 8 p . m ., under the presidency of Bro . H . J . Macfarlane Secretary , with Bro . H . Hill Preceptor as Vice-President . We hope there wdl be a large attendance , and predict an enjoyable evening for those who are present .

The Lord Mayor of Liverpool ( the Eight Hon . fche Earl of Derby , G . C . B ., P . G . W . Eng . P . D . P . G . M . j took the chair on fche 6 th , as President for the year at the annual festival of the

West Lancashire Alpass Masonic Benevolent Institution , held at fche Prince of Wales Hotel , Southport . Subscriptions amounting to close upon £ 1 , 300 were announced . We shall give fuller particulars next week .

A NEW candidate for public favour , in the form of the " Magnet Magazine , " makes its first appearance this week from the establishment of Mr . James Henderson , Red Lion House , Fleet Street . It is to be published weekly , at one penny , and promises to give an amount of interesting matter . o o o An interesting souvenir of fche Queen ' s long reign was published a few

days back , under the title of " The Gentlewoman ' s record of the Queen ' s most glorious reign , " with it being issued a portrait of Her Majesty , printed in colours on satin . The " Record" includes a literary sketch of Her Majesty's reign , embellished with sixty illustrations , showing the most

important event in each of the sixty years , a p icture of the room in Kensington Palace where the Queen was born ( by permission of Her Majesty ) , portraits of the Queens of England , and a special portrait of Queen Victoria , drawn by H . R . H . the Princess Louise .
