Alhambra—The new ballet on the popular subject of " The Handy Man , " recently produced by Bro . Dundas Slater , is a vast improvement upon the old-fashioned ballet in dumb show . Songs and dialogue are introduced , and the third scene almost resembles an act from a comic opera . The story shows the love of Lieut . Jack Grey for Grace Hillcote , who , after exchanging presents on board
H . M . S . "Loyalty ' are parted by Grace's wealthy father . Jack goes with his ship to the Indian Ocean , and turns up at a small town on the xersian Gulf , where he has landed with a boat ' s crew to make purchases . Here he discovers Grace , who has been wrecked , and is receiving the too ardent attention of Sahdi Bey . Of course Jack recovers his sweetheart , and a grand entertainment is given by the
Bey in their honour . The above characters are sustained by Mr . Lytton Grey , Miss Lily Bircham and Mr . Frank Celli with true dramatic feeling , while the title of the ballet is justified by a crew of trained seamen who go through their cutlass drill in the first scene , and depict the fun of Jack at sea in the second . Special mention must be made of the songs li The four , point seven , gun , "
" Jack ' s the Man" and the stokers song "Puff , Puff , Puff , " all of which will doubtless become popular . The ballet proper is represented by Misses Judith Espinosa ,-whose Slave dance is very clever , Amy Logan , Ada Taylor , and N . Houghton , and the celebrated Alhambra corps de ballet . composed by Mr . George W . Byng , the musical director . entertainment . THE first anniversary of " Florodora " at the Lyric took place on Wednesday ; that of " A Message from Mars " will occur on 22 nd inst . Both pieces are still attracting large audiences , and show no signs of waning popularity .
Bro . HENRY J . WOOD will conduct the Lamoureux concert at the Nouveau Theatre , Paris , on Sunday next . The programme will include Beethoven ' s No . 5 Symphony and a symphonic poem by Mr . Percy Pitt . Bro . Wood has been recently appointed the conductor of both the Sheffield and Wolverhampton Festivals .
