MASONIC GATHERINGS AT SOUTHAMPTON .

THERE were two largely attended and important gatherings of Freemasons at the Masonic Hall , Southampton , on Friday , 3 rd inst ., the first being that of the Grand Chapter of the Province of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight , and the second that of the Grand Lodge of Craft Masons of the same province . CZ . congratulated the Grand Chapter on the progress Royal Arch Masonry was making . A new Chapter was about to be inaugurated , aud there was a very good

number of Chapter in the province in proportion to the number of Lodges existing in it , and these Chapters , he believed , were all in good working , and were , he hoped , tending to the spread of Royal Arch Masonry throughout the Province . After the transaction of formal business , the Grand Chapter was closed in ancient form .

An emergency meeting of the Prov . Grand Craft Lodge of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight was then held , under the presidency of the Right Worshipful Bro . W . W . B . Beach , H . P ., tbe P . G . M . The chief business of the Provincial Grand Lodge was to receive and consider the report of the Provincial Bye-Laws Committee , who brought np a code of Bye-Laws which gave rise to a brief discussion , and ultimately , on the motion

of Bro . J . R . Hayman , it was remitted to the Committee , whose number was strengthened by the addition of the Provincial Grand Registrar , Bro . Lancaster , and the Master or other representative of each Lodge in the Province , such representative being a member of the Provincial Grand Lodge . A large number of the brethren afterwards sat down to a bauquet , provided by Bro .

Dartnall , the P . G . M . presiding . At the recent Grand Lodge festival the Province of Hampshire and Isle of Wight was shown to stand seventh in financial rank , as contributors to the total of £ 45 , 774 given to the Schools and benevolence in the past seven years . The seven Provinces standing first are West Lancashire , £ 3 , 486 ; West York , £ 3 , 461 : Kent , £ 3 , 315 ; Warwickshire , £ 3 , 215 ; Middlesex , £ 2 , 034 ;

Lincolnshire , £ 2 , 034 ; Hampshire and Isle of Wight , £ 1 , 971 . There are now thirty-five Lodges in tho Province , and five of these were represented by seven Stewards , whose lists reached a sum of £ 300 afc the late Festival for the Boys . The Province has contributed in all £ 1 , 672 , and to this must be added £ 583 for the Girls' School , and £ 1 , 276 for the Benevolent Fund , the aggregate contributions to the three funds being £ 2 , 829 . —Portsmouth Times .

PANMURE CHAPTER , No . 720 . THE election meeting of this Chapter was held afc the Horns Tavern , Kennington , on Monday , the 13 th inst . Amongst the Companions present were Excellent Companions R . N . Field M . E . Z ., R . H . Harvey P . Z . as H . ( in the unavoidable absence of Excellent Companion Samuel Poynter ) , B . R . Bryant J ., James Steveus P . Z . and Scribe E ., Henry Smith P . Z . and Treasurer ; Companions J . W . Watts Scribe N ., J . S . Terry P . S ., H . Baldwin P . S ., William Wilkins ,

G . Harrison and others ; and visiting Companions R . H . Voisey Sphinx 1329 , Robert E . H . Goffia Carnarvon 1572 , and George Wale Bargoyne 902 . Bro . Thos . Spearing , of the Southern Star Lodge , 1158 , was a candidate for exaltation , and the ballot proving unanimous in his favour , he was duly exalted into the supreme degree , with full ceremony , most ably rendered by the Principals and Officers . The

jewel , of customary pattern and value , was voted for presentation to the retiring M . E . Z ., Companion R . N . Field . After the despatch of other Masonic business , the Chapter was closed , and the Companions adjourned to supper . The remainder of the evening was enlivened by songs and recitations , the few toasts given being introduced briefly , but nevertheless receiving due response . The Visitors were very earnest in their several expressions of satisfaction with both

work in Chapter and subsequent conviviality . A most enjoyable evening , quite in accord with the old traditions of the Panmure Chapter , the unity and harmony of which has ever been maintained since its institution , terminated at a reasonable hour , and the Companions separated . The installation meeting will take place on the 8 th of May ( Excellent Companion James Stevens P . Z . to officiate as Installing Principal ) . A large gathering of members and visitors may be anticipated .

rpHE installation meeting of this Chapter wa 3 held on Tuesday , tho -L 7 th inst . The installation of principals took place at six o'clock . Comp . J . S . Cumberland was rc-installed in tho chair of Z . by Comp . T . B . Whytehead P . Z ., who also installed Comp . C G . Padel in the chair of H . Comp . Cumberland then installed Comp . J . T . Seller in the chair of J . The Companions were then admitted , and Bro . J . R .

The chief business of the Provincial Grand Lodge was to receive and consider the report of the Provincial Bye-Laws Committee , who brought np a code of Bye-Laws which gave rise to a brief discussion , and ultimately , on the motion

of Bro . J . R . Hayman , it was remitted to the Committee , whose number was strengthened by the addition of the Provincial Grand Registrar , Bro . Lancaster , and the Master or other representative of each Lodge in the Province , such representative being a member of the Provincial Grand Lodge . A large number of the brethren afterwards sat down to a bauquet , provided by Bro .

Dartnall , the P . G . M . presiding . At the recent Grand Lodge festival the Province of Hampshire and Isle of Wight was shown to stand seventh in financial rank , as contributors to the total of £ 45 , 774 given to the Schools and benevolence in the past seven years . The seven Provinces standing first are West Lancashire , £ 3 , 486 ; West York , £ 3 , 461 : Kent , £ 3 , 315 ; Warwickshire , £ 3 , 215 ; Middlesex , £ 2 , 034 ;

Lincolnshire , £ 2 , 034 ; Hampshire and Isle of Wight , £ 1 , 971 . There are now thirty-five Lodges in tho Province , and five of these were represented by seven Stewards , whose lists reached a sum of £ 300 afc the late Festival for the Boys . The Province has contributed in all £ 1 , 672 , and to this must be added £ 583 for the Girls' School , and £ 1 , 276 for the Benevolent Fund , the aggregate contributions to the three funds being £ 2 , 829 . —Portsmouth Times .

PANMURE CHAPTER , No . 720 . THE election meeting of this Chapter was held afc the Horns Tavern , Kennington , on Monday , the 13 th inst . Amongst the Companions present were Excellent Companions R . N . Field M . E . Z ., R . H . Harvey P . Z . as H . ( in the unavoidable absence of Excellent Companion Samuel Poynter ) , B . R . Spearing , of the Southern Star Lodge , 1158 , was a candidate for exaltation , and the ballot proving unanimous in his favour , he was duly exalted into the supreme degree , with full ceremony , most ably rendered by the Principals and Officers . After the despatch of other Masonic business , the Chapter was closed , and the Companions adjourned to supper . The remainder of the evening was enlivened by songs and recitations , the few toasts given being introduced briefly , but nevertheless receiving due response . The Visitors were very earnest in their several expressions of satisfaction with both

work in Chapter and subsequent conviviality . A most enjoyable evening , quite in accord with the old traditions of the Panmure Chapter , the unity and harmony of which has ever been maintained since its institution , terminated at a reasonable hour , and the Companions separated . The installation meeting will take place on the 8 th of May ( Excellent Companion James Stevens P . Z . to officiate as Installing Principal ) . A large gathering of members and visitors may be anticipated .
