V & T'E are pleased to hear that the recent defeat of yy Bro . Harry Manfield , of Northampton , on the poll for the office of Grand Treasurer of England for 1899-1900 , has been taken in good part , not only by

the candidate himself , but by those who worked on his behalf , and who , although defeated , were certainly by no means disgraced .

Bro . Harry Manfield , at the earnest request of his Executive Committee , has been asked to stand again fpr the office of Grand Treasurer at the next election

and has consented to do so , and from the fact that Sir John Monckton , the Chairman , and many of the members of Bro . Bevari ' s ; Executive Committee"have

expressed a desire , to . jom Bro . Manfield ' s . Committee for next year , and have , moreover , pledged themselves to do everything in their power to secure his return , his success would seem to be pretty well assured thus early .

ft is characteristic of the principles of Freemasonry that a Brother defeated on such a poll as occurred at the Quarterly Communication of Grand Lodge , and those who virtually defeated him , can thus ; early shake

hands , and join their forces for a future struggle . We are taught to cheerfully accept the verdict of the majority ; and , surely no better illustration of the practice of this precept could be found than-is presented in this matter .

The fact that Bro . Manfield ' s supporters recorded no less than 1 , 026 votes on his behalf at the recent election proves beyond a doubt that he is a very

popular candidate , and regarded as well deserving of the honour for which he competed . Now that a host of . his _ re . c . ent _ . oppQnents havcranged themselves - under his banner he , would : seem , to have arivalmost certain

prospect o | success , and he will be ; a bold-man-iindeed who attempts to oppose Bro . Manfield ' s , candidature for . the Grand Treasurefship of 1900-1 .. We wish him

Royal-Masonic Institution-for Girls , whose age will preclude her from taking part in another election if unsuccessful in April . She is a daughter

of the late Bro . Knott , who was for some years Master of the Fulham Union Workhouse , and died on . the 19 th June 18 97 , leaving his widow and family totally unprovided for . Bro ! Knott was initiated in the Belvedere Lodge , No . 503 , and was a member of the City of London Lodge , No . 001 at the

ON Tuesday , 14 th inst ., the Consecration of the Clifton Lodge , E . C ., installation of W . M ., and investiture of Officers took place at the Clifton ( Braamfontein ) Wesleyan School room . The ceremony was performed by Bro . J . da Silva Past District Senior Grand Warden , with marked impressiveness . There was a large attendance of members and visitors , says the "Standard and Diggers' News . "

rriHE annual meeting of the Provincial Grand Lodge of JL Mark Masters has been fixed by Bro . R . V . Vassar-Smith for the 5 th May , at Ross , the Consecration of a new Mark Lodge in that town , to be named the Kyrle , taking place on the same day .

fpHE preliminary arrangements for the provision of a JL Masonic Hall are proceeding most satisfactorily . At the last meeting of the Loyal Berkshire Lodge of Hope , the Secretary Brother Past Master Stephen Knight read a report from the Provisional Committee , as to the purchase by the

Worshipful Master of centrally situated premises , which are admirably suited for adaptation as a Masonic Hall . An enlarged Committee was appointed , with power to engage the services of Past Master W . Ravenscroft , architect , of Reading , who will furnish a report as to alterations necessary .

As mentioned last week , the Fifteen Sections will be worked at the Guelph Lodge of Instruction , No . 1685 , on Wednesday next , 22 nd inst ., at the Plough and Harrow , Leytonstone Road , E ., commencing at 7 p . m . Bro . James Oxley P . M . 1306 will preside , with B . DaCosta P . M . 1349

A pleasing event at the recent meeting of the Cinque Ports Lodge , No . 1206 , at Sandwich , was the presentation of a handsome inkstand to Brother T . M . Jotcham P . M ., the late Treasurer , on his removal to London , in acknowledgment of the services he had rendered to the Lodge during his residence in Sandwich .
