INSTALLATION OF COMP . A . J . WALKLIN

THE annual installation meeting of this Chapter was held at the Masonic Hall , Wilmington , Kent , on the 1 st inst . Comp . Wm . Hawker M . E . Z . presided , and was assisted by Comps . Orlton Cooper P . Z . and Percy White P . Z . as H . and J . respectively . After the minutes had been confirmed , a dispensation was read from the Grand Superintendent of Kent Earl Amherst , who

sanctioned the promotion of Comps . A . J . Walkhn and C . W , Spriggs to the First and Second chairs of the Chapter without the usual qualification . Comp . Orlton Cooper then assumed the First Principal ' s Chair , and proceeded to instal Comps . W . Spencer Bowen and C . W .

Spriggs as Joshua of the Order ; Comps . C . W . Spnggs and A . J . Walklin as Haggai , and , finally , Comp . Walklin as Zerubbabel . Considerable assistance in the ceremonies was rendered by Comps . Percy White and William Hawker , and a vote of thanks was passed to the Officers who undertook the work .

The following Officers were invested : —Comps . Ernest Ingman Scribe E ., Geo . F . Fishenden Scribe N ., G . C . Realff 1 st Asst . S ., and William Royle Janitor . The investiture of Comps . Rev . Hayman Cummings as Treasurer , T . J . B . Sandercock as P . S ., and H . T . Davey as 2 nd Asst . S ., was postponed in consequence of their inability to be present . The Auditors' Report was received and adopted , and the Chapter may be congratulated upon its greatly improved financial position .

A P . Z . jewel was voted to Comp . Hawker , and will be presented to him at the next convocation . There being no further business the Chapter was closed in due form , and the Companions adjourned to dinner . Among those present , in addition to those already mentioned , were Comps . Geo . F . Taylor P . Prov . G . O . P . Z . 913 , J . G . Turner P . Z ., G . A . Grant 1472 , J . A . Gillett acting P . S ., & c .

Perhaps it is that members of the Masonic Order who find themselves in awkward positions in those places have learnt to be cautious , and profit by the experience of the American prisoner , who , pleading

to his judge as a Brother Mason , for leniency , found himself sentenced to a double term ; firstly for breaking the law ; and secondly for breaking it wilfully , after having been specially instructed as a Freemason to recognise the iniquity of doing so ! But there are occasions of Brotherly greeting , as evidenced by the following , extracted from one of last

week ' s issues of the " Dail y Mail" : Frederick White , fortyfive , plasterer , who was fined at West Ham on Saturday for being drunk , addressing the mayor ( Councillor Bishop ) , who was on the bench , said : " Brother Bishop—for as such I think I may address you , as we belong to the same branch of the Plasterers' Lodge , of which I am Vice-President—I have never found myself in such a disgraceful plight before . "

The anniversary meeting of the United Lodge , No . 6 97 , was held at Colchester on Wednesday , and at the close of the business a handsome cigar cabinet was presented to

the Lodge by Bro . J . T . Bailey Secretary , on behalf of his wife ; a loving cup in commemoration of the first installation in the new century was given by the Past Masters ; and the new W . M . signalised his accession to Office by giving an inkstand and a pair of candlesticks for the Secretary ' s table .
